Yay let's move the price around on Christmas! When no one's at their desk!
Possible exceptions: Sad Bitcoin Speculators Government/Hedge fund flunkies People who want a Slashdot article (1 a week on BTC is excessive, is there some system where articles can not hit the main page but we can sign up to see them?) but don't want anyone to read it or comment!
Well the people who sold a bunch of bitcoins (and did it at the exact same time as the exchange was hacked. Causing the loss in price) were likely some of the original miners, who mined when it was easy using the resources they had available as IT people. It's actually a good sign for bitcoin that these people want to move the coins back onto the market.
They might be reasonably smart people (having access to the first miners, knowing about bitcoins before you did) and they'd know that holding onto them and selling them off slowly would pay more in the long term (and since they had access to mucho hardware they probably had stable jobs[possibly as botnet owners]).
There are several other possible reasons for bitcoin values deprecating, the obvious and often mentioned hatred by the establishment, an attempt to distribute the currency to the people to create a more egalitarian financial climate (hard to imagine but remember the U.S. is one of the top 3 most right wing countries, and the majority of the intellectuals there are left leaning), or third to try and stabilize the price making transactions easier (I want to sell something for $100, if the price stays level I don't need to change the BTC price every day. Of course this only lasts until the inherent value of BTC is established).
I guess I can appreciate the fact that you don't want to recognize how stupid and poorly informed you were that you couldn't get into bitcoins when they were >1c but the vehemence surrounding this is kind of silly.
This is a currency by nerds for everyone. Perhaps the naysayers are happy working for people who take the majority of profits and who's involvement is that they had capital available to fund the venture, I just think that that's the attitude of someone who knows they are stupid... if you know you're stupid don't invest... buy a lottery ticket.
I'm a bitcoin speculator, I believe in the value of the currency and the extrication of the information world from the policed world.
The truth about bitcoin is that significantly more money has been invested in bitcoin than the current total value of the currency. This is not because it's a ponzi scheme, it's because it has opponents. People who are willing to lose money to keep out other investors and drive the price down. Who? Well obviously I can't tell for sure but it makes sense that the U.S. government, major hedge funds, and billionaire diversification wealth management services are involved. Why? Well first to maintain the value of existent wealth, if you have billions that's a level of money that you simply can't spend... you and your great great great great grandchildren will be wealthy... unless something changes. These people diversify into gold and resources when any chance of real social change comes into the picture, these funds are geared to this... not profit.
But why not just buy it all up? Why drop the price and keep people thinking it's worth $4? Well the really terrifying thing for these groups is that people would have a realistic notion of how much money there is in the system. People, particularly middle class people, are aghast when they begin to understand how much conventional currency actually exists. There are hundreds of people who could pay you, through your great great great great great great grandchildren (all of them) a good wage to bash your face against a wall. With a finite currency, you'd KNOW that you have less than 1/10,000,000,000 of total USD (assuming a solid retirement savings and decent home, for example). That spells rebellion against existent currencies.
How? Buy high, sell low. Not difficult, and surprisingly, not very expensive (especially when you can sell to yourself). And in addition make strategic sells when speculators buy large lots so that many of the high volume trades appear to be people unloading when in fact most of the transaction was people buying (50,000 price goes up 50c strategic sell right at the end for 2,000 and the overall price trade blip goes red) People are willing to accept the price on offer in most cases, there are always amounts trickling in from people who accepted donations, sold goods (for the current price), or are forced to give up their speculation for financial reasons. Speculators like myself are more than happy to buy in at the current value, and people who don't care (or know better) simply accept the exchange rated value as the actual.
I saw an example of this while watching the market on the 21st, when it went up to $4.50 and then dropped to $4 in less than 1 second, with a huge heap of available coins suddenly appearing, available in the evacuated ask space. It looked like the price had never moved.
Personally I think the brains have been stolen from again and again by the cult of personality and back door individualistic crony capitalism. We NEED our own capital pool, not just because of the many options bitcoins make available but because we'll never be free to create, invent and work together seamlessly if we can get back-stabbed by anyone with a hand in government, fiscal policy, etc. Regulations have never helped us, the people buying change and directing the regulators have never been brains, they've always been the wealthy and the politicians. The ability to sabotage our, and each other's, projects is at the core of why billionaires struggle to get more billions, so they can fight one another. It takes time, effort, and brains to build something... it takes nothing to pull a fire alarm. The problem is people who think it takes a lack of ethics, they think that's a real thing, god help them.
Me and other speculators who really believe in bitcoin, are holding on to our coins, and I imagine the pool of coins available to the people trying to lower their value is going down. In the coming weeks we'll see more and more articles of this nature. Wit

Get a G1... they're going for about $75 on ebay right now. Having a real keyboard makes all the difference, installing a custom rom to taste can solve the rest of those issues.
If you live alone, or with a partner who has a smartphone you can save money by moving to tethering. The only thing you lose is For example Mobilicity offers unlimited internet (about 256k up/4Mb down) for $10 a month. You can get Voice/SMS+MMS/unlimited data for $17.50 which is less than the cost of any ISP deal I've seen. You can also save on Router hardware.
I enjoy having data on my phone because I use (and sell) voip, specifically a one time payment voip ($50) which provides voicemail (normally $8/mo) and unlimited calling in Canada. Other than that it's true having an old school phone has advantages, a physical keyboard for typing while walking, cheapness (read not being neurotic or having a huge iPhone+protector), speed (no cumbersome OS or multitasking to slow you down), BATTERY LIFE! and cheapness (again:)).
The tinfoil hat implications of smartphone are horrendous as well. Apple and Google's work to dissuade people from having real control over their devices(every patch, every single god damn patch) goes far beyond their fear of having to compete with their older models.
Still if you're not a gamer the cost savings of having a phone for internet outweighs the above price concern + Random usability. For me it's a calender and recording, both phone calls (I have a crappy memory and winning fights with girlfriends is soooo sweet(so sweet!)... plus not worrying that a company will pull a fast one, also for my work [consulting]), it also puts day trading within your reach if you're really a tech head and follow advancements (made a killing on Athlon)
But that's just it, to each their own. I have a phone with a keyboard, for me a tablet or iPhone is a boobtube, made for viewing content and poking links not creating content and navigating properly. Having another device to take notes with (recording/email) is worth the price of admission even without internet connectivity and email.
Anyway pay once VOIP service is available through Phaistoscommunications.com if anyone on/. still needs a smart phone and wants a phone number that will work forever with no bill (That's called quality).
Are you serious? You think the advertisers that do TV aren't kicking ass at Internet advertising?
You do know that Internet advertising includes stories/ads/social media etc. right? There's probably a huge blitz on-line too, it probably takes place weeks before the vote and uses all kinds of nasty subliminal crap to sway your vote.
It's really scary how effective subliminal targeted political advertising could be, google adwords changed, debt reduction ads to remind you to vote for tax cuts, poverty articles to remind you of your need for a social safety net. Since most advertising uses links to ad servers it wouldn't even be obvious to the host website.
A TV ad in the U.S. costs > $40,000 that's 4,000,000 views in net ads.
The saddest part is that there's not a website where the politicians line up their policies against each other in no nonsense black and white explanations...obviously sometimes governments need to react but something like that would prepare the executive branch for the policies and mindset they will need over the next four years.
It would also shame parties that don't have clear policies on certain issues (poverty and education for the GOP, gun control and troop pull outs for the DEMs[Although I do get a feeling that the military industrial complex trumped them]).
Just have categories: 50, 100, 250 and 5000 words and have the two positions link their views to the corresponding policy from the other party. If one party doesn't have a 250 word piece on an issue you know they're flaky on it, and if you get a 5000 word piece out of one of them you get a pretty solid understanding of their intentions, enough to tell when they turn hypocrite or abandon their core values at least.
I imagine all the polarized voters reading this will assume the other side will cheat somehow, but just because you know a six year old will flip the board doesn't mean you shouldn't try and TEACH him/her chess.
Well if I was designing something to kill people for the army that's the most powerful in the world, and one of the most difficult locations to attack as well. I'd have some moral qualms.
The cost overruns are probably due to having to restructure the project (by management who's probably technically inept, but who can't pass the buck) so that you have more employees who don't actually know what they are building and who have to be paid more because of the incredible moral quandaries they encounter.
This is being designed for a country with no open enemies and that can't afford to teach their soldiers Farsi so they can go out and explain the values of the U.S. system of government.
A country that could have won in Vietnam by dropping refrigerators, but didn't have the insight.
When you invent something it can be used forever, and eventually it'll fall into evil hands.
Good point, and the thrust of those cases were "He's insane" or "it was an accident." Not that those involved got a little push from someone higher up.
It becoming standard operating procedure not to tell people what they're actually doing. Not asking questions is a good way to get promoted, another good way is to get the job done without micromanagement.
When people are a paycheck away from letting their dog/wife/grandma die they make some pretty horrific decisions. This is a factor of the difference between the rich and the poor, countries with small gaps have little crime, countries with big gaps have massive crime. The relative wealth of the country plays a small role but it's not the most important metric.
In many powerful countries today the poor are so badly off that they vote to receive the tiniest tax break. They don't realize that by voting for the right they are accepting that everyone more wealthy than them is better than them.
If you look at world wide statistics the left has traditionally improved the overall economy and quality of life FAR more than the right. If you take slavery into account in the U.S. (when the republicans won far more) and in Facist countries (Germany, Italy, Japan) usually during war or imperialism the numbers become incredibly obvious... that said the right might be able to come up with a factor to swing it back in their favor... but I doubt it.
Since taxes on the rich can rise about 50% it's not always going to be true that citizens outnumber government employees.
These technologies, like nuclear weapons, will always be with us. That means that they will eventually be abused.
I know you think you have free will but I've never started a book with a Jewish author and ended up reading a Nazi or vice versa.
People need many things to become incensed enough to buck the system. Most importantly they need central points of incandescence to catch fire (In Les Miserables it was the act of a marquis running over a child then paying as a recompense).
More importantly people are desperate for self determination and pride, following someone else's bright idea is physically painful for some if not most people. Authoritarians can always say they are maintaining order, a simple thing to sell especially if the order is your boss.
In the U.S. nationalism is the big motivator, the more the rest of the world hates you the more nationalism sets in.
It will take a huge leap for police and the armed forces to step outside state run media, appreciate the nature of their country and co-ordinate. Especially since legitimacy is a vital ingredient in the three ring binder approach to law enforcement which turns police, the law, and the military into little more than a machine.
Should be obvious that when TDS says steam it means nuclear, this is obviously a nuclear aircraft carrier.
More interesting is why we're being told that China has "Steam" ships.
The people's republic of China is just as technologically advanced as Russia, Britain or the U.S. it's disingenuous to imply otherwise especially regarding weapons capability.
Maybe you think it's just nitpicking but I did look through all the other comments for someone to at least mention how the article got it wrong
But we can't be sure? What the hell does that mean for giant programs like Windows? Or programs that you wouldn't suspect like video drivers (a two company duopoly), msn, IE, Router Firmware?, Microsoft Word, Firefox, Linux, etc.?
And what are our inklings of the penalties here? Can we penalize this company for doing something ferociousness when they were just following the orders of the FBI to "include a little code", or a court order not to discuss their involvement with law enforcement?
When programs send "random data" to fill packets we'll never know....
Perhaps a small country will speak out against this and all the genius tinfoil hats will move there and build paradise.
Well first you'd need an effective deterrent or punishment for malfeasance. Currently governments do all sorts of unsavory things and get away with them, even when the public knows!
Worse still are the evil's that companies get away with. Though rarely proximate in scale their motivation of "profit" makes their acts equally heinous.
Since the major media uses sound bites, which aren't long enough to really get people enraged ("oh I'm sure that's out of context", "they know something I don't", "it's not the voter's responsibility"). But which quickly grab the spotlight from any real progress being made or issues worth examining.
Viewers end up with extremely generalized and stereotyped views of what's going on.
By being modded up... so the system is self reinforcing. Also it's self perpetuating, to get modded you need to conform to Slashdot decorum... once indoctrinated into the Slashdot culture most users enjoy it and conform.
I know I used some scary words there but what I'm saying is that Slashdot has developed a system for their site to stay focused, discourage maleficence, and grow. All in all a brilliant system and one I'd like to see copied on other parts of the internet.
Google is just saying "All your content is belong to us." which is what they've always said. Now that's something I don't like much.
And just so I don't come across as a fanboy, the search functionality needs to work, there's no valid reason to lock old stories for editing (just don't archive the newer additions), the new layout SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS (why can't I see the comments I want, I've noticed several times that comments I've posted [at +2] aren't available to users who aren't logged in) and most importantly WHY CAN'T I ACCESS OR DOWNLOAD ALL MY PREVIOUS COMMENTS?!
We need a GPL type universal list of shit that's unethical. With a brief portion on punishment/restitution. Some companies will choose to subscribe, others will not... it will not be difficult to figure out which is which.
Let me get it started: I won't collect information I don't directly need to offer automagicalness in my software. I won't store information that is no longer relevant (old passwords, credit card numbers, etc.) I will contact, though it might be impersonal, users who have been singled out for any reason and inform them of how they've been singled out. (overuse of bandwidth, RIAA inquest, CIA inquest etc.) I will try to make information about my policies to the extent that competition, the legal system, and law enforcement allows. I will be clear about my revenue streams, not just to tax officials but to my customers. I will do this so that I am less susceptible to under the table, anti-market influences. Such as: subsidies from the government for aid in doing wiretaps or other social analysis.
We are against (a list of whatever): Anything that reduces the freedom of our society to produce true individuals or subversives. Violence Information that can facilitate violence Covert Monitoring Social Analysis Puppies (whatever, you get the idea).

I pray for this every day.
But then we'd be secure against them too.
And that's just unacceptable.
They're spying on something.
Oh and by the by... Quantum Computers + wiretapping = http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=sneakers.
These corporations keep stating that the information they keep is generic and not harmful. If so how about they share it publicly?
They don't give you money if they don't know what you'll do with it.
She needs a hobby: Burying diamonds.
Oh... she could make fake dinosaurs and put them places! The Christians would LOVE IT!
Anonymous is gonna LOVE this!
I still think jokingly attributing everything that goes wrong to the CIA would be more fun and effective.
:)
If you're an atheist they are your bogeyman
Internet goes down, CIA. File get's corrupted, CIA. Windows crashes, CIA. Boss loses an email, CIA.
Would make it WAY harder to algorithmically track subversives.
Plus it's kind of fun!

With the sliding doors are becoming iconic.
People rent instead of buying homes, there's an increase in the pressure to have a sparse home and storage space is becoming increasingly expensive.
This was inevitable, I just wish I'd had the money to pull it off first.
We need a GPL type universal list of shit that's unethical. With a brief portion on punishment/restitution. Some companies will choose to subscribe, others will not... it will not be difficult to figure out which is which.
Let me get it started:
I won't collect information I don't directly need to offer automagicalness in my software.
I won't store information that is no longer relevant (old passwords, credit card numbers, etc.)
I will contact, though it might be impersonal, users who have been singled out for any reason and inform them of how they've been singled out. (overuse of bandwidth, RIAA inquest, CIA inquest etc.)
I will try to make information about my policies to the extent that competition, the legal system, and law enforcement allows.
Violence
Information that can facilitate violence
Covert Monitoring
Social Analysis
Puppies (whatever, you get the idea).
It's not like Android is going to run on top of Windows.
Let the Linux kernel loose Intel.
