Paying 0% transaction fees are a good deal. When you offer a good deal you expect word of mouth. Other transaction methods charge fees, often excessive fees. With the money gained from those fees and central control they pay for something called "advertising."
Now it should be obvious to you that companies that use advertising are making enough profits OFF YOU to pay for that advertising.
Now there are many parts of the BTC economy that do make profits, they should CERTAINLY have to pay for their advertising.
There is a lot of interest in creating word of mouth using advertising dollars these days because the small minority of consumers who can do things like: math, comparison shopping, and reading reviews are influenced more by word of mouth than sheeple who "see - > want - > must have."
I'm sure at some people people will do a study on how much stories like this increase the BTC economy. It's not hard to track given that banks take about 4 days to transfer new funds into a bitcoin exchange.
Bitcoin value is attached to a currency. That means an economy. The BTC economy is worth about $100,000,000. Or about the size of a small city.
That means it's more stable than a stock in a single company.
BTC buyers do add value to the currency. They intend to eventually spend or exchange their BTC, that means they are adding confidence to a fledgling economy.
What people who don't have BTC are upset about is that the price has gone up astronomically while they weren't involved and BTC is slowly (but surely) becoming the defacto Internet currency which means that it's valuation will increase by orders of magnitude.
And yes a few days ago someone sold 40,000 BTC creating a minor panic. Immediately before that the price of a BTC increased 50% to $15... and no one sold. People are holding onto their BTC very very tightly... if you wanted to put your savings into BTC right now you'd have quite a difficult time.
Banks, credit cards, hedge funds, etc. are against BTC. Some because the wealth has been so distributed that they can't get their normal 99% and some because it means freedom from fees and central control.
Those opponents are perfectly happy to spend 10 or 20 thousand dollars to push the price around and make the currency seem unstable or unviable.
The way the currency has been attacked by someone (if you wanted to sell off your coins why not just put them on sale for $10 instead of selling all at once and getting Don't let your BTC go for less that $10,000. Next year is going to be a lot better than this year.
Really? You have a computer. Other than that life is pretty much the same as it was 100 years ago. Oh and you have a car instead of a horse.
When the industrial revolution made manufacturing an order of magnitude easier people should have taken a break to instill equality, philosophy and education using all the free time.
Instead we allowed those technologies to make the richest people even richer. People work more now than they ever did before. So many people write reports and do silly paperwork that no one ever reads or cares about. That number will continue to increase.
Resources for changing the world are more expensive and harder to obtain than ever. Distributors won't give individuals enterprise class hardware to experiment with, and when they will it's usually so expensive that only universities can afford it. My YMCA doesn't have an electron microscope, a molecular sieve or any of a hundred other technologies that would let individuals be inventors.
Also things like printing have become MORE expensive. Publishing a magazine is more expensive. Building a radio or TV station is MORE expensive, more time consuming and more political than ever before.
How about simulating a new world. That technology is "theoretically possible". And if you can't tell the difference, there isn't one. Morpheus, and his "must live in reality" buddies can janitor the machines for us. Problem solved.
The Diamond Age seemed pretty swell. The Feed, socialized food, housing, entertainment, etc. Multiculturalism and libertarian communities, a stable level of weaponry producing a modicum of peace. Technologies being designed for education, etc.
Near the end of Vista/XP I read some articles about how MS cut OpenGL performance by 30% saying it was so DirectX could run faster.
There was a lot of talk about how OpenGL forced more work with the hardware.
At the time DirectX11 was about 15-20% slower and they needed DX10/11 to succeed or Windows 7/Vista would flop.
The only reason a lot of gamers got 7/Vista was for DirectX after 9. It was total skulduggery. Now since iPhones and iPads have become the hot place to release a little game and make a bunch of money off $2.99 sales.
Now, OpenGL is the way for AAA developers to differentiate themselves and they're taking it seriously.
The thing about it is that the sellers simply get another layer of protection. Their shipping and bank accounts are probably still anonymized, regular drug dealers do it, why wouldn't these guys?
One interesting thing from the article was that some of the older sellers seem to be retiring. They probably made their million and have a bunch of steady customers they can shop around to producers.
This whole thing is a really bad smell on BTC... but it's not something the DEA is likely to attack too soon. They'll go in slowly and try and get the site to store details, probably giving the proprietor a free pass, then go after the dealers and put notes on all the clients records.
The biggest problem with this is it wrecks kids lives. They want the hardcore resale channel more than the kid in the suburbs.
The point though is that BTC businesses can be successful even with the market fluctuation we're seeing. It's easy to automate selling any incoming coins so there's no reason it shouldn't... except people think it's spooky magic!
Science is probably the most isolating field. You have co-researchers who are totally off limits and... no one. No Clients, few meetings, few social events, no banquets etc. Regular pencil pushing has much more socialization, and human error type mistakes. ("Tom's so silly!" [I'm aware that it's a stereotype that women talk about social interactions more than men but I've found it true]).
Few stories from work and few opportunities to meet people means it can be an isolating social area. Saying that attractive women will find stability there and have no problem attracting socialization seems to be the point of the commercial, not a bad attempt at the problem.
This "problem" is a popular one with quasi scientists but has been researched scientifically. I'm sure they have a pretty good idea of what is keeping women from being interested in pursuing a career in science.
The Black market is the only thing keeping modern content development alive and kicking. If we couldn`t get mainstream shows for free we would create our own distribution and production ecologies.
Apparently there is a huge resevoir of Methane under both the polar and south polar icecaps. It's a biological chemical useful for bio-ecosystems. But also as it's released it will reduce global temperatures.
It's a large part of why it's called "Climate Change", and not "Global Warming".
Go to your public transit commissioner, ask them to make sure that Wi-Fi is available on subways/metros... if that fails make sure that Gig-E is run next to any cabling done by phone companies (it's expensive to run cables, running 3 instead of two [GPRS, CDMA, etc] is cheap).
Getting public wi-fi on transit systems is an important milestone in admitting that communications infrastructure should be anonymous.
It's not enough that a person and their husband/wife can speak in private, it's not enough that librarians understand that reading habits and access to information should be free, and that anonymity means more than "harboring pedophiles" we need to encourage this on a broad scale.
Running public internet next to private cellphone coverage is - cheap, obvious, and necessary.
Maybe they want a 50 year colony on Mars to wait out the nuclear apocalypse they're bringing about. Sounds in line with the agenda of the super rich crazy and heinous.
Bet the studies show that if they nuke the poor and hide underground their children will kill them rather than be slaves to their wealth:P
What made you buy a phone for that much? You could buy several used phones with peripherals for that much. Then you have a backup, and a platform. If they all work you can give them away or sell them. You can put the newest OS on them. They're slightly faster but with a proper OS that doesn't matter, they can't compete with any other gaming platform except the DS I suppose.
The newest phones also have the problem of not having a physical keyboard, it's slower to type on... which is one of the most arduous things to do with a phone.
The G1,Droid Eris, Desire, Prevail and at least 4 other phones are selling on ebay for less than $100 with shipping. They've been doing so for several months. Just check out if the phone has been listed as supported by Cyanogen Mod, then you have a stable mod to fall back on if another mod doesn't work out for you.
Also by buying a phone from another region you can get one that has wider frequencies. Or at least that crosses frequencies within your area, this allows you to change providers whenever you want.
It might seem tempting to run a super fast phone with a firmware from the providers but that will lead you into privacy issues quickly. First off, it's nice to not be paranoid about losing/damaging your phone. It's nice to have super cheap aftermarket batteries, or batteries bought by the original owner... most smart phones won't last two days. Finally, that extra CPU speed isn't there for YOU to use. It's for Google, or whomever they work with to use.
Also it's recycling! And you can resell the phone for the same price if you decide not to use any of them.
It happened to do something to Iranian centrifuges. It probably did something different on journalist or senator PCs that caught the virus.
What the system needs is more honeypots monitoring net activity and changes to the system image.
It will be tough considering how big systems are and how difficult it is to simulate all user activity but it should be sufficient to find a lot of drive by trojans and viruses, if not user installed malware.
Really it's about having a few mild mind altering chemicals available legally. Being able to manipulate your mind in a safe environment is a good idea. Having an increasing number of people selling dangerous chemicals because they're addictive and have a high profit margin isn't a good thing.
What if that warning came saying "We can't get a warrant yet, but you're on file and we'll check up on you from time to time when it's legal." Might make people stop before they end up in prison for doing something really illegal.
Cops give out warnings all the time, it would be nice to think they check the person's record first though.
Police budgets were cut under Bush and are only getting up to those levels now. Meanwhile, the TSA, CIA,NSA, HOMELAND SECURITY, Etc. have INSANE budgets. They're investigating and preventing crimes, why not just hire more police? Or more detectives (FBI). As far as I can tell it's because those agencies have less judicial oversight so they can be used to target subversives or whoever is inconvenient, often with them not even realizing that's what they are being used for.
I've got to agree with this. People looking at pedophilia look always at the pedophiles as a completely EVIL group. They never examine the actual implications, damage, or related issues. They have laser focus that these people are evil and don't want to know, discuss or think about it anymore.
Interesting, that's the time period I noticed Opera getting worse. More memory usage, slower loading, slower everything really. And the updates, every week or so. They really went from one of the best products in the world to one that's almost mediocre. I have a lot of love for the brand so I'll stick with it but there's definitely some more stuff that's close to malware in it recently.
These 12 anonymous people just screwed creativity for the next 50 years or so. What a shame.
Works fine on Android too. Just hold and select bookmark. Like any other App shortcut or widget.
You have $100,000,000 gold? Wow. You might want to go outside.

Which is part of the reason BTC is successful.
Wow, after your insightful comment I see the light! Bitcoins are a scam! I must unload my 5 bitcoins. How about $5 each? Will you take them?

Cars since the 70-80s are heavier and less fuel efficient because of increased safety measures.
Hopefully automation will reduce crashes to such an extent that we can reverse that trend.
