I live in Toronto and we have two stores, active surplus and Above all. In either one you can find any kind of PC component for approximatly $5 (maybe a sound card would set you back more but that's because it's specialty) some parts you'll have to go in the "maybe not working box" but if you use redundancy you can get it all working. They have $30 cdn monitors.
Basically yea it can be done, these guys are doing it for the most part to support haxor culture, they are crazy russian engineers who have basically volunteered their time to run the place but they aren't doing it at a loss.
"maybe not working components" aren't for everyone but I can build two computers for $100 American so I'm happy.
Agreed, also since Japanese people are multi-lingual (unlike most U.S. citizens) they can get access to the tonnes and tonnes of Japanese games released for PS2 (probably about as many as English titles) as well as the games we are used to.
Xbox doesn't have any depth in terms of Japanese developers.

Agreed. People actually sighed when I told them I wasn't American when I was overseas.
To a certain extent Rich American's are richer than anyone else and poor American's are too poor to travel so they have to suck up.
Maybe that is what you were experiencing, as a backpacking tourist talking to other tourists, well they all dislike America. They want to hate you but your country isn't really powerful enough to merit hatred anymore, it just seems like the last gasp of caeser.
I know it might make their network more complicated... but I really wish they woould support some of the old formats for user listing, like e-mail and ICQ number sorting so everyone can be added easily.
American soldiers aren't willing to die for their beliefs just kill for them.
That underlies a terrible political ideology.
As technology improves the ratio of people killed in action on the two sides will increase.
When the American government doesn't even keep statistics on civilians killed in action and cries over losing 50 soldiers there is something terribly wrong.
Video card manufacturers are once again screwing everyone. Their costs for video cards include Produciton and research costs, distribution costs, retailer markup and marketting. And even with all that they cost more than that estimate.
Obviously not every video card can be top of the pile but gaming is only one application of video cards, some people buy matrox simply for their multymonitor support.
Unfortunatly these guys are trying to fit in between onboard video and low end video cards.
And that gap will be filled as soon as the major players realize it's there and open some drivers.
Also their old cards have massive open source support.
I personally find this very interesting because my Linux box had it's Video Card go out. My main box has a ATI card so even an upgrade card move won't solve my problems! I really need a new card! And it's going to have to be an old nvidia card because ATI doesn't have the support I need.
In fact it will probably not have the highest performance/price ratio just because of driver support. I will spend as little as I can to get driver support because I can't imagine getting good price/driver/performance on linux from a graphics card.
These guys might be on to something. I imagine it's really really hard to break into the graphics game right now.
It's not the developer who suffers. IT's the poor producers. they've invested their hard earned money and they expect 80-90% of the proceeds god damn it!

When was the last time some kind of secret public record made a big splash by being released to the public through hacking?
I can't remember that ever happening. Investigative journalists are still way up on Hackers in my book. (And that is a really bad taste.)
In the French Revolution some people revolted because they saw the corruption and self centredness of their government, it's incapability of dealing with a change in technology, other's simply revolted because they wanted more wealth.
Which seems to be pretty much what is going on in your country right now.
What percentage of American population is in the military or employed by the government for support of the military?
That is the population supported by the population to contribute the the faschist government's power and directly controlled by then while being turned to a useless existence.
I'm sure other segments of the population could be considered. Basically look at all the major revolutions in history and their causes then look at the American Government. No one thinks that government is acting on the best interests of the people, perhaps a little more than for the best interests of other people, but even that just show's it's irrational and corrupt nature. Time for a regime change over there I think.
The thing about politics is that it is a very developed science.
From the perspective of the "common man" there is only the end result, Health Care vs No Health Care, Taxes > Taxes, War (This is about america after all)> war.
But from the perspective of politicians politics is all about having the people of a nation unified behind one set of goals and a single means of accomplishing them.
This isn't as obvious in democracy because government's are forced to cater to the "common man".
Because there are few options it is harder for people to accept for example a right wing view that the needs of the few should be curtailed for the benefit of the many, or the left wing view that a society should benefit it's inhabitants to the fullest extent possible.
The really scary thing is that democracy isn't about the average opinion at all(mean), it's about the mode (the option with the highest number of responses).
This of course leads to the two party system whereby it becomes much closer to a test for average (half fell closer to this ideology half feel closer to the other ideology).
Put into this context the justification for being afraid of a three party system becomes more clear, the terrifying thing is that even the "common man" feels there is no diffrence between the two parties in America because their short term results are so similar, this is partially because neither party has the power to enforce their ideal system.
Basically the American is a great political system for people who don't want change and who's views are consistent with the most common viewpoint, which is in fact democracy but with terrible perversions.
Really the whole thing is an example of how democracy doesn't work, a society of inward looking "common men" simply can't appreciate the entire nature of their parties ideologies and weigh even the chance for their success let alone the value of their desired results.
Not being particularly interested in cars I was bored once listening to a friend talking about his engine.
He seemed to be very impressed with how much power was in his car, when I pointed out that it really wasn't all that powerful when compared to serious commercial equipment he tried to explain the limitations of the fuel injection engine.
So I looked around for a jet engine to put in my parent's minivan (I am so pathetic but I think my dad would secretly appreciate this). There are many problems with jet engines, first there is cost. Jet engines use materials that are expensive because of their rarity, this is not something that mass production(or technological improvement) would alleviate only increase. Second they are vastly inefficient in terms of fuel power to output power.
Third they are loud and HOT!
There were several other reasons why the jet engine will never be put in a rice burner but I think the ones above are enough to crush our hopes of this technology as a battery replacement.
Good lord, I've heard of Democracy, Communism, Fachism but a nation where the power rests in the hands of lawyers! It's the worst possible solution bring forward STALIN!
The scary thing is they are smart enough to make all kinds of deals with each other and the politicians without anyone knowing about it.
The election booth problem didn't really concern me, it can't compare with the problems involved in the ignorance of the American people. But this is terrifying.
Are you kidding? The American voting system has been riddled with illegitimate voting procedures since it's inception. Nothing that is conflicted is written in history books, no conspiracy theories, no questions written by the public. So you'd never know.
Modding sometimes requires basic soldering sometimes very little. There is also some no-soldering mod chipping available.
This might seem strange to you but you may need to seek an automechanic or someone else with a welder. As to opening the Xbox yea it's a pain you need a special screwdriver.

Wow I wish my version had that option!
But I don't think any of them did. Or were you being sarcastic!

Until Pear OS came along then people had to download OSX to show their parent's and grandparents it really isn't better.
Well that maybe a pretty specific example of my friends use but I think we'll see more piracy thanks to PearPC
When they were still making CD players they were doing essentially the same thing.
Hell I've seen those things around recently!
Are there any simple apps to covert an entire collection with diffrent bitrates to another compression?
I'm pretty worried I'd lose files and significant quality.
My collection is definitly an archive I have stuff I've been listening to for the past 8-9 years in there. Rather not have it fubared.
I've been enjoying the quality/size/low system usage ratio of wma and considered going that route.
I always got the impression that OGG needed more horsepower (ala Xvid vs DivX) while saving only minimally in file size.
Since it's music it is still subject to power limitations therefore the exponential growth of computing power has less relevance to this problem.

If it comes with internal memory and VOIP software then I'll be a happy camper :)
Case Engineering aside it's really silly for a PDA to cost more than a PC.
Software developed for a single standard same with hardware. The damn things are Gameboys!
And yes there should be a market for sub $200 wifi enabled handhelds they just haven't made them yet.
