Those who can't even teach, work for the government. Those who can't even do that work for a government contractor. The rest get elected. Does this article make sense to you now?
Maybe you need to learn the difference between discipline and punishment. There's an awful lot of literature in the field that shows that punishment doesn't work, all it does is drive the behavior you're trying to correct underground. It will still happen, you just won't see it anymore. And your kids will resent it when they're older (for the most part, there are some exceptions, amazingly enough).
10 years is a long enough period for my oldest to get arrested, but that's cutting it pretty close. Nevertheless, the kids in her school that always get in trouble are the ones who always get spanked. She's not one of them. You do the math.
My oldest is 8, and I've never hit my kids (I have 3). Guess what? Stand them next to your ass-beaten kid and take a wild guess which kid will be better behaved. I can't answer your question because my kids know better. Instead of beating the piss out of them, I teach them. Kids are usually good people that screw up just like anybody else, but are willing to fix their screwups if you tell them what they've done, why it's a screwup, etc.
Actually, the trend since the late 70s by software development companies has been to remove choice, and if we don't stand up and resist (and even if we do, it might still happen), all choice will be gone. Considering the amount of devices that we depend on every day that are comprised of software + hardware, do you really want to live in a world where some corporate suits get to decide what choices you have and what choices you don't have?
Why is your free market only available to companies? Don't customers have any freedom in your market? We ask for products to be produced under our terms in exchange for our money. Why is that so unreasonable? "It's a free market" has become synonymous with "I have to bend over and let [insert your favorite company here] do whatever they want to me", and that's just plain sick.
To answer your big question, there's a core of american values that is shared by many cultures that I strongly believe I want to see on top and dominant in the world. But I do not see our current american society really sticking to this core anymore. So I guess I don't really have an answer to the question.
Speaking of France expanding its territory, we are all aware that the vietnamese war for independence lasted something like 25 years, while American involvement only lasted for about 15, right? Who were the vietnamese fighting the other 10 years?
Actually, I think DRM is what's holding them back right now. I have a little device that provides plenty of reading space, and I read on it quite frequently. In fact, it's my preferred way of reading, and like many, I grew up with paper books. I guess unlike many, I've always hated paper books. I now have something that fits in the palm of my hand, doesn't require distracting page management, and can show me a font that I choose (and I do like to use larger fonts than most, apparently). It works at night, in the day, in the sun, in the moon, etc. A lot of people have devices like this.
But when I go to buy a book, I have to unlock it, and/or buy a special program from somebody to show it, etc. So I don't waste my time with that. If I can't get the book without DRM, I don't get it (even in paper, if the publisher wants my rights, it doesn't matter if it's paper or digital, he still can't have my money). If I buy it with DRM, then I've got a whole bunch of hoops to jump through to prove I"m not a thief. Whether you like DRM or not, it's a huge inconvenience. So as a result, I've gotten pretty familiar with a lot of older works available from project gutenberg, and Baen is now my favorite publisher.
And I don't read paper books anymore. I've got a lifetime of reading material, why go back?
According to wikipedia, Tesla and Edison fought for years over AC/DC. In the end, Edison admitted his mistake in supporting DC power. He's quoted as saying something like "It isn't exactly pretty, it isn't exactly small, but I'm here to tell you AC has got it all." To which Tesla predictably responded with "Old folks are always telling me 'Boy, why don't you grow up and be a man!' ".
Hahahahahaha. That was funny, thanks.
Here's hoping that "If they would have let [this person] carry guns" catches on as a meme. :)
Actually, he said "high school research papers". You can stop your smear campaign when you learn to read.

Nah, the MPAA doesn't deal with porn, so they wouldn't give a fuck.
Ah hell, a lot of the earlier macs didn't have a separate switch for the monitor, and she's old enough to have used one for a goodly long time.

Heh, yes it is, but it's easiest to check the result by making a new post. :)
Hey, thanks for pointing that out. I hope I fixed it. (I'm posting this to see :) )
I would more accurately say you have accidentally stumbled across precisely what this is all about.

(The answer is France, of course)
Clearly they don't want you to sail on a ship out to the middle of the pacific where you can pick up the signal from LA, Seattle, or wherever.
I prefer to run timestomp right before make.
To prevent people 100 miles from the game from driving 50 miles to a friend's house to watch it?

That's no reason to be a baby about it.
No, their product is the parodies they produce. It's not just linked.
I've never seen so many people get scared so completely shitless over a photoshopped image.
Well, I'm considering one now. For my wife, of course. I've always wanted to wire my wife's vibrator to my guitar, only she doesn't have one. :(

No, I think this article is more like "Think of the really awesome people in history who died prematurely. We can save people like that, now!"
I'm sure Kirk will be pleased.
You use emacs, don't you?
Er, all tht does is encourage them to build a stupid fence around pluto.
