While you're going to get modslapped for that as I have in the past, I'm putting my karma on the line to say I agree with you, and until most SysAdmins get this into their skull, IT folk will continue to be snubbed.
At the moment I work at a fisheries in the country. I'm the only SA within 50 miles of here. I can't afford to be stuck up like I used to be, because I'd be the only one here that thinks I'm more important. I understand I'm not, and it makes people much easier to get along with.
So you support the less-consistent interface, then?
No, when did I say that? I was only replying to the parent. If one user wants to change the close box to close tabs, fine. I wouldn't use it, even though I have been caught out occasionally by closing all tabs by accident, I've learned and got used to it. But it doesn't mean it's not a valid and fair feature-request.
So if it is implemented, and the main close button closes tabs, not the whole window, how do you quit the application?
All (two) of the P2P apps on 'doze I've used let you redefine that behaviour though. Since, like the OP, I tend to "shove" the pointer into the top-right and click, I acutally prefer that behaviour for apps that run "like deamons".
That's only because the sentence has been taken out of context. Because of this, and the fact that the sentence only refers to one entity, we have to assume that the dog was cooking dinner.
For instance, if you say I am gay, and I sue you, I had better not be gay.
No, you had better be able to prove you are not gay. If he says you're gay, and you say you're not, that's not grounds to sue him. Since you can't comprehensively prove that, you won't win there.
Okay, you're only using "gay" as an example, and obviously there are plenty of things that you can prove that you are not. My point is, there's more to it than just saying "that's not true!", you've got to show why.
And once you let someone compromise your system, you'll never be able to fully trust it again. It's about the stupidest idea yet in computer security. The only reason it wasn't on that list of "top six stupid things" the other day is because it's not an adopted practice, and isn't taken seriously.
And since TripMasterMonkey is an incessant troll, please, don't be gentle.
I'm in New Zealand, and at the moment, Slashdot and Google are about the only sites that I can access at the moment. I couldn't contact any of the first 6 hosts in something I searched for earlier. I dunno what the hey is going on...
No worries, I was a bit confused for a minute there. And I agree, I'd rather, and do, use a free database that's fine with me. For the record, it's MySQL at the moment and I'll look at something different when I need to. At work, they want to pay for SQLServer, that's fine. It's actually a really good database, and hasn't given me any stability problems on good machines. Sure, it's expensive. For some people it's worth every cent. My home database requirement are very simple, error checking is done in code, not in the DB engine. I don't need foreign key support for what I'm doing. I can remember most of the MySQL "gotchas" and they're not a problem for me. If I'm going to try and put NULL in a place that shouldn't take it, I should know about it long before my DB engine does.
But let me have this: Furthermore, the graphical browser it's an alpha version that on my machine is more stable than the current stable release. Hint and it's not IE. Check your grammar, how can I interpret this sentence otherwise. It seems you are saying you're running an Alpha version more stable than others are running the "Stable" version. You also seem to have assumed I choose to run Explorer. This certainly isn't the case, at home I can't run it, at work I choose not to. But I also choose not to run an alpha release, whatever browser we may be talking about.
I did find your point about not being a DBA, speaking of the masses you've met that couldn't comprehend their own stupidity to be a bit stuck-up, maybe I overreacted, see below.
You probably cannot even top the current one [president] for stupidity, but I have been proven wrong so many times... then: (note George W. Bush is NOT stupid! - my contention, his performance is)
I think a lot of our disagreement has risen out of misunderstanding. The points I argued were with what you wrote, not what you might have meant, and I do believe some of your writing invited misinterpretation at least. In my case I saw little in the way of a substantial defence and more ad hominem, which I don't, by the way, think I'm guilty of. While "get over yourself" may have been a bit borderline, I never attacked your character, I threw your words back at you. You've encouraged me to run for president, among other things.
I'm sure you do have valid points, and that you are as skilled and qualified as you say. I chose to disagree with you on one point and personally felt you gave that little attention. Thanks for your apology, I in turn regret the misunderstandings and that we've decended to insults. Likewise, I apologise.
Well if I were that pretentious I would have added a bonus point. Wha?!
Moreover, I could mention experience that probably surpasses yours...
Don't worry. That you're so experienced you can take if for granted any given person that argues with you is less so, leaves us in no doubt of your superior intellect.
[rebuts point that was never made, re DBA]
Moreover, I have encountered a number of very dense people that could not even conceive of how uninformed they truly were.
Wow. It's a wonder they can even breathe eh? So you've met a few dorks. Big deal.
I perhaps should note, however, I was never trained to be the application database programmer I describe myself currently.Of course not, as we have been shown, you're naturally brilliant! If, however, you wish to match my academic training and experience (I only have two degrees) we will see which of us is over impressed with themselves.
Regarding MS marketing, do not take the Enterprise adjective too seriously. Furthermore, the graphical browser it's an alpha version that on my machine is more stable than the current stable release. Hint and it's not IE.
Holy shit. You're so smart your computer runs alpha versions more stable than mere mortals like me can run stable versions. I clearly don't stand a chance in this arguement, since my browser's 10 times more likely to crash, to say nothing of you out-doing me in degress. Not that you were trained, though. You did them while waiting for your five wives to pick something to wear, right?
Thanks mate, you've put at least a little humour into an otherwise dull day for me.
Doesn't it hard-wire in an upper limit of rows or table size?
Well, yeah. It's a "free" version. I remember when SyBase released a free version of their own database, limited to so many gigs of ram, such and such a max database size, and it only supported one processor.
Hordes of people were crying "why would I use a database limited to 4GB!?! One CPU, Gah!"
It's a demo! Boo-hoo you can't run your enterprise off it! If you try to use a "free" database, and then get in the shit when you reach one of its limits, good job!
Get over yourself. If a DBA fails to "recongnize their lack of skills", maybe they're doing just fine with the management tools. If his skills are so lacking he'll screw up his own database eventually.
Creating graphical tools to enable more people to do more things easier is a part of Microsoft's business model. SQL Server Enterprise Manager etc. are just examples of where they've succeeded here.
Personally I'd love to see an open source equivalent of these tools, the offerings I've looked at so far are unfortunately lacking.
And don't give me crap about being a click-and-drool reboot monkey. I'm sick of typing SQL to get things done, when I can grant permissions by picking users from a list and ticking the right boxes.
Did you use telnet to post your slashdot comment? No, you used a graphical browser. Because you don't want to type the http request, and the graphical browser presents the HTML to you in a way that is more natural and effective for you.
Seeing me use Enterprise Manager does not make my co-workers think that they could do my job just as easily. They do not end up thinking any "fool" can do it.
For some reason, I'm more bothered by people who think it's a backslash.
I'm not bothered by people who think it's a backslash. Cleaning the blood out of my watchstrap is a bit of a hassle, but other than that they're not usually too much trouble.
Hi. "Not much slower than Perl" I can agree with. My friend further up the page, of course, insists that Python is fater than Perl. I think what we can learn from this is that he can't program in Perl, and can in Python, hence it being faster.
Admittedly, I was picking on Gentoo Portage, not python in my last paragraph, and I probably shouldn't have. Yes, 'emerge' and portage are god-awful and the only reason I stopped using Gentoo. It's so slow that I had to put it down to much more than inefficient database usage, although upon studying it, it seems the gentoo devs really went out of their way to make the portage database slow, and emerge may be unusable simply because of this after all.
Great, so would adding Tetris and pyschiatric counselling to MS Windows give it the edge over OS X?
It's just another one of the stupid, broken things on Slashdot. People still take moderation seriously!?
Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

File->Exit. That's how.
I want the GUI to go away, but not the program.
Hmmm.
File -> Exit.
I hereby submit my idea to the Public Domain.
That's only because the sentence has been taken out of context. Because of this, and the fact that the sentence only refers to one entity, we have to assume that the dog was cooking dinner.

Hmm. I'm going to have to wait around for someone with mod points. Until then I won't whether you're joking or not.
I think Gnome 1.4 was the best. IMHO it's just got worse ever since. I mean, look at SameGnome now!
I'm in New Zealand, and at the moment, Slashdot and Google are about the only sites that I can access at the moment. I couldn't contact any of the first 6 hosts in something I searched for earlier. I dunno what the hey is going on...

Yay. Ad hominem. And again, nothing substantial. Apologies for the British spelling, which seems to have lessened me further.
Well if I were that pretentious I would have added a bonus point. Wha?!

Laying your name to the claim would be a good start...
Well, yeah. It's a "free" version. I remember when SyBase released a free version of their own database, limited to so many gigs of ram, such and such a max database size, and it only supported one processor.

I'm sure at some stage PostGreSQL was missing a few features you need, that doesn't mean we can bring them up and use them against your argument.
Creating graphical tools to enable more people to do more things easier is a part of Microsoft's business model. SQL Server Enterprise Manager etc. are just examples of where they've succeeded here.
