Here in the Netherlands PhD students are paid a net salary between 1500 and 2000 EUR net per month. Also, everybody speaks (some form of) english; it is the lingua franca of research here.

My favorite scifi universe is the universe created by Peter F. Hamilton in his Night's Dawn trilogy (also short stories featuring this environment are collected in "A second chance at Eden").
Absolutely believable high-speed space opera;)
