Umm, have you ever heard of the Bill of Rights? It is not possible to be convicted of a crime on circumstantial evidence alone. There must be a witness to the crime or there is no conviction. This is why traffic tickets are thrown out if a police officer doesn't show up for trial. No witness, no case.
You're kidding, right? Of course it's possible to be convicted of a crime without a witness. A jury must be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt of the defendant's guilt. That's it. As far as I know, there weren't any witnesses who saw Jeffrey Dahmer kill anyone, but the remains they found in his freezer were pretty convincing evidence. They didn't have much trouble convicting him.
You can't compare traffic court to criminal court.
I bought an Archos Jukebox Multimedia last year, and I really like the large amount of disk space and the ability to read directly from CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards (it was very handy to be able to back up pictures from two digital cameras while on vacation last winter).
What I don't like is the terrible battery life I get from it. The best it can manage is about 4 hours of play if I've just unplugged it, and if it sits unplugged over night, I sometimes only get about an hour. I'm not the only one having these battery issues either. I've seen many other owners complaining about the same thing.
It's not a big deal when I'm using it at my desk, but the thing is practically useless for long trips away from a power source, which was one of the reasons I wanted it. I don't know if the MediaBox has the same issues, but if you're interested in it, I'd recommend waiting for some customer feedback on it before you buy one.
This is as much MS's fault as it is anyone elses. I mean, if I bought a car (I hate to bring the whole car analogy thing up again) and someone came along and leaned up on it wrong and it stopped working. I'd be pissed at the manufacturer, not so much the leaner (who is laying on the ground with a bloody nose by now).
You've got to be kidding, unless you really believe the kid didn't know what he did was going to cause harm. Since he was modifying an existing worm, I find that hard to believe.
There's a difference between an accident and vandalism, and this was no accident.
The Death Penalty is Evil and Expensive(tm). Right, and locking someone in a cage for the rest of their life like a circus animal or zoo exhibit is more humane? I'd much rather get executed than imprisoned for life. Life imprisonment, not execution, is cruel and unusual.
In a perfect world, in which no one was ever wrongly convicted of a crime, you might be able to convince me on this one, but we don't live in a perfect world. Enough death-row convictions have been overturned in the past few years that we need to reconsider the death penalty.
Put another way, if you were convicted of a crime you didn't commit, would you still want to be executed, or would you rather be given the chance to prove your innocence and maybe live the end of your life free?
Card counting isn't illegal, or even cheating, although the casinos would like you to think it is. However, the casinos aren't legally required to allow you to gamble in their establishment. If they decide you're counting cards, all they can do is decline to lose any more money to you. So they aren't really outlawing anything -- just asking you to go elsewhere.
There were several available online petitions to simply fillout and click to submit--how many of us actually bothered?
Public input to the FCC ran 97% against this move. How much good do you think a few more people filling out online petitions would do? They were ignoring people who actually used their procedures for getting input, so a few more names on an online petition, which is of dubious validity anyway, wouldn't have made any difference.
It's not a pain to program it, but I never thought it was worth the trouble to use it. I'd catch the last few seconds of the last commercial and hit the skip button again, forcing me to rewind 27 seconds to see what I'd missed.
I much prefer to use the fast-forward in second gear -- it gets through the break fairly quickly and when I see the show come back on and hit play, it automatically backs up some so I don't miss anything (the amount it backs up is configurable, too).
As it is, I'm competing with foreign workers, college educated (at no cost to themselves generally, or they're from one of the few wealthy families in their home region,) who are willing to do the same job for less money because they don't care about having an american standard of living even tho they're living in america, and they aren't as deep in debt as I am from student loans.
I'm not sure what you think "an american standard of living" is, but if they can live in the same country for less, maybe you have an inflated sense of how you should be able to live. Compared to the much of rest of the world, a small crappy apartment in Albany is pretty damn nice.
I'd love to spend a few years working in another country. Australia? Yeah.... I can work for three months at a time.
Unless things in Australia have changed in the past two months, you can get skilled immigration status without having a job offer. Just have the right skills and experience and they'll let you move right over and start the process of becoming an Australian citizen. Or you can get a sponsored job offer and stay indefinitely.
When I actually CAN 'follow the jobs' the way people from other countries can, we can talk.

So I guess I imagined Rush Limbaugh and about ten thousand other Republicans complaining about welfare recipients. Thanks for clearing that up.

Okay, let's talk.
