The concept of AI API's is an excellent idea, not to mention it rhymes. A game could be distributed with the capability to author your own AI. The idea of open source is a popular thing and could do well for AI, I'm sure. People would work on them and might even develop something quite nice. Even if their creations were never used in the final product, it might lend a hand to software developers with some fresh ideas.
Who knows what the geeks of the world can come up with. I think we can all say Linux.
As for current AI, one of my favorites was Aliens vs. Predator. I think the character development played a part as well. But the intelligence of my opponent scared me sometimes.
I could be an idiot, but don't/didn't people use the same argument in reference to Linux as well?
