    I know what was said in the article. It was a HORRIBLE article.
    But think about it. There are no launchers today that can launch more than 21 tonnes. Delta IV heavy is the largest going today.
    And yet, they are claiming that it would be 65 tonnes within 2 years? The author in this article is messing up all sorts of facts.
    What is really missing is, that this can NOT be assembled in space. These are single units, i.e. it must be launched as one unit. here you go.

    Absolutely NOT. The problem is that Chinese generals think that it is possible to win. And if they can take out enough of our launchers and incoming, then yeah, they COULD 'win'. So, unless both sides understand and believe in MAD, then it does not work. And in light of leaders in both USA and China that delude themselves about global warming, I would say that yeah, they will delude themselves that if we drop our count, that they COULD win, IFF they launch first.

    Sadly, brain-dead idiots like you who have no idea of what is going on, or how numbers stack up, will push us into a nuke war. It was bad enough with W, but I suspect that if we get an idiot like u in China or USA, that we will see a nuke war.

    These scientists have become almost foolish. They continue to speak about Russian and American nukes, but ignore the fact that China now has more nuke launchers than they have warheads. So, why would China keep more launchers going then warheads? Because they did not. Each of those launchers have at least one nuke warhead, if not more.
    That is why it would be stupid for the west to cut back on nukes.

    And when it comes to CO2 emissions, they scream about USA. Yet, CO2 is not linked to per capita, but to GDP. As such, any solution MUST be linked to GDP. And not GDP(PPP). The reason is that PPP removes a nation playing games with their money (china comes to mind). So, by using their real $ GDP, then we should focus on emission / GDP. Yet, they are not.

    Sad. really. Long ago, the BAS was actually a decent group. Now? Meh. They are ran by special interests sub groups who are not really interested in the core ideas. IOW, do not trust their clock or their solutions.

    In fact, this might destroy ASI's work on the cans. It always drove me up a wall that we removed competition on the module constructions. BUT, each one of those cans cost something like 200 million on up.

    OTOH, if is 17 million for this small unit, it will be a major paradigm shift. The reason is that BEAM was SUPPOSED to include CBM or LIDS on each side. If they can do all of this for 17 million and all that is needed is to extend the metal core, and increase the size of the outer fabric, well, that means that a BA 330 can be done for under 50 million. Easy.

    It also means that for less money than what ASI charge just for manufacturing their cans, BA and SpaceX can put a module that is 3-6x larger in volume. That really is incredible.

    BEAM was never going to be a BA-330. It was to be a bit bigger than the 2 coffins that are in space now.

    Actually, this will be a small module. Apparently, they are looking at sending it up in the extended trunk of a dragon. The trunk has a length of over 4 M (~15'), and something like 30 m^3 volume. As such, they might be able to send this up next year in one of the scheduled dragons.

    the expansion is nothing. It is a small closet. It is so that NASA can test things on it. What is interesting is that BA has had 2 coffin-sizes in orbits for a number of years. So, the fabric works. Now, time to test other parts.

    Lets wait and see what happens on Weds. However, I agree with you that it would appear to be so. And actually, I have seen multiple links that said that it was for studies on it, not for the hardware. But, I am sure that you have seen nasa space flight is now saying otherwise ( i saw it after I posted here).

    Apparently, this story is shifting. Few are really certain if the 17M is for hardware or not. However, Parabalic seems to have the right attitude: Money going towards BEAM, but not sure what/where.

    I will say that 17M would be below the cost of this module. However, it would also let bigelow get his lines going so that in 2015, he could start putting up a space station.

  10. This is 17 million for the study. More importantly, beam will NOT be 65 tonnes. Heck, we have nothing that can take it up since the days of the saturn V. It is a SMALL closet that will weigh under 7 tonnes.

    In 1793 the first Patent Act was modified, by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, to include a definition of a patent which persists till date, “any new and useful art, machine, manufacture or composition of matter and any new and useful improvement on any art, machine, manufacture or composition of matter.”.[2][8] Between 1790-1793, a total of 55 patents were granted, and by July 2, 1836 a total of 10,000 patents had been granted.[9]
    The fact is, that patents were actually considered by our forefathers as being evil because of what had happened in Europe. Europe's royalty granted forever monopolies sometimes, with somebody else's works. In addition, workers were taught secret processes and then required to stay basically as a relatively high-paid slave to those businesses/royalty.
    HOWEVER, it was also realized that many new tech required time to come to fruition esp if you did not have money. As such, LIMITED time patents were granted to make it possible for the inventors to produce items. There was nothing in the constitution, or the laws that says that inventors can simply sell the tech. Basically, that was a derived idea later on.

    And as one with patents, I can tell you that I have ZERO issues with limiting these to myself or the companies that I have worked for. Basically, the idea that these can be sold and nothing comes from it is pretty much worthless. OTOH, with this approach, it requires investors to decide to go with the inventor/company or not at all.
    And I suspect that many other inventors will feel the same way.

    Patents SHOULD be kept. The problem is that there are 2 main issues with these: method patents and patent trolls.

    Method patents are only in the USA and are absolute insanity. I am about to file a number of patents and one of them will be a method patent. Why? Because if I do not, some scam artists will do so. And with our patent office hiring some of the worst inspectors, well, it is just cheaper to own the patent. Unlike lawyers, I hate legal battles. They are never productive.

    In addition, the patents should be changed to help ONLY the person who came up with it, OR the company that they work(ed) for when developing it. The whole point of patents was to provide the inventors the ability to get these items to market. Instead, these are being sold to patent trolls who are destroying America. Simply require that the patent MUST stay with the inventor and/or company that developed them. That removes the value of them to sell and basically means that law suits will be only for REAL issues.

    Of course, the problem will be that companies like Cisco, MS, and even Bill Gates will jump in and fight against these, regardless of the damage that it is doing to America or the various inventors.

    Since 1967, I have recycled what I could (cans, bottles, paper, and these days plastics).
    However, I found out that Waste Management (WM) sends our recycled goods to China. That is JUST INSANE to buy goods from there and then send it back to there. This has multiple issues. Basically, China requires the ships to return full. They can either send back resources, or manufactured goods. At this time, they can send back resources because we are foolish enough to do so. However, if we stockpile the items, at some point, we will figure out that recycle of our trash is the way to really lower our costs. At the same time, it stops China from being able to wage an economic war with the west.

    Now, as to access to resources, we have the rare earths. That is not an issue. Molycorp has those. In fact, molycorp has even developed a clean safe cheap way to mine the resources. What is really missing is the actual conversion of ore to the metals. And that is pretty wicked. If we can clean that up, then we should be OK.

    Around Xmas, my wife got into a car crash because a 17 y.o. girl decided to pass in a no-passing zone and lost control in the snow. So, we have had a rental while her car gets fixed. The rental is a ford with Sync. That is a PURE POS. I have been SO unimpressed by it. Esp. since I have spent a bit of time playing with the model S and seen that it is superior to Ford's junk.

    However, I am curios what OS GM is running. That might be worth while developing for (like the tesla).

    Seriously, this is INSANE. First off, MS and the other companies go to great lengths to NOT pay their fair share of taxes. And if a nation attempts to have the companies and wealthy from these pay their fair share, they threaten to go elsewhere.
    Then to add injury to insult, Gates had MS Windows cost less than $5 to buy in the store in China, while here, they take in $200-1000. And they actually pay MORE taxes in China than in America. INSANE.

    BUT, I look at the likes of Bill Gates and Balmer, who have invested into companies that basically steal IP from America and are now hard at work shipping it out. For example, Bill gates wants to develop his nuke idea in China rather than in America. But, China has ZERO intention of protecting his IP. In fact, they will use it for their own purposes and like Germany's transrapid, buy one and then steal all of the tech.

    Seriously, the west needs to quit providing companies like this with help, when they constantly screw over the nation. HP, Dell, IBM, GE, etc should be allowed to take up the theft with China, rather than having us solve their issues.

    Actually, multiple things wrong with what you are saying.

    First off, there are multiple bubbles building in China. They are crashing with Chinese gov. lying throught their teeth on just about everything. Even now, they claim that the economy is doing great, yet, they are building up massive coal reserves because now where as much electricity is being used.All in all, China is in REAL trouble.

    Now, as to the issue of cash, I find it interesting that nearly all investors are pushing the dollar. IOW, it is spreading more than ever before. Why? Well, who else are you going to go with?
    China? Nope. Even China is desperately buying dollars and trying hard to spread their yuan to others in hope that if they crash, others will as well.
    Japan's yen? Nope. Been in a recession for nearly 15 years and are now far more dependent on China than any other nation, with China now demanding their islands.
    Euro? Nope. They are heading into a massive recession with the euro possibly collapsing.
    Australian dollar? Nope. They depend on Chinese importing their resources. Well, if China collapses, so will Australia.
    UK Pound? Nope. They are in a massive recession with the pound about to slide downwards.
    Canadian Dollar? Possibly. Right now they are far too small, BUT, they have ran a tight fiscal ship.

    You may think that investors want off the dollar, but nothing could be further from the truth. Investors and other nations desperately want dollars. Heck, even Iran and Venezuela wants dollars.

    Funny thing is that I have heard others say exactly what you are saying for the last 5 years.

    Actually, ARIN still has plenty of IPs in America. We have not run out. Yet. In addition, as ISPs in other nations convert to IPv6, they will likely release IPv4 subnets. IOW, it will be possible to move subnets around shortly. In addition, I have noticed that a number of cloud systems have NOT made the jump to IPv6 yet. They are holding back to see how to simplify their own set-up.
    So, the best solution is to start subtracting subnets each year. Basically, force the issue and keep it going.

    It's too big. Space-X doesn't need a facility that big. Unless you intend to launch something the size of the Shuttle or the Saturn-V, nobody does. Space-X's first Falcon Heavy will be launched from Vandenberg this year, so they don't need huge new facilities.

    You mean with falcon heavy running late this year, early next year, or the BFR (big fucking rocket) that is being quietly developed, are too small for that area? The BFR is meant to launch 150-200 tonnes into LEO. And this will likely occur before the first manned mission of the SLS.
    And you think that SpaceX is too small? Really?

    Not even close to true. China holds debt, but this same BS went on with Japan back in the 80's. Then Japan took it in the shorts because they had manipulated their money for several decades. In addition, they allowed large bubbles to develop. Sound familiar? The only real difference is that China will not lose 10-15 years. They will likely lose 20-30 years of stagnation. And that assume that they do not end up in a civil war when multiple bubbles pop.

    Start removing classes for use in the IPv4 arena.

    Right now, ISPs, esp. in America, are not converting because they do not need to. BUT, to speed it up, all that needs to happen is to require that 5% of the IPs be returned every year or so, starting 1 year out. That will pretty much force the situation.

    And for those that will scream that this is not right, BS. It is needed. Long needed.

    Got news for you. Your diesel trucks (f-350) does a lot more damage than does all of the light-weight vehicles. And the fact is, that taxes should go up on diesel as well as gas. BUT, diesel holds a special place. Basically, it is the feds that need to raise it, not states. And the BS about going with GPS is just that: total BS. I do not want the feds to know where I drive. They already know far too much.
