I too switched from Bloglines to Google Reader earlier this year when the system threw a CAPTCHA at me that I just coudn't get thru! No matter what I tried, it was too complex and I just couldn't get thru it. Why is the security for a RSS reader more complex than my BANK'S security?! Insane.
OK, you are missing something here. The "government" you mention also includes the Left, who were against the patents because it was the right thing to do. Hence, the government rejected patents because it was the right thing to do.
It does not matter whether the "whole" government agreed or not... the point is, they did the right thing.
I think it's time Slashdot stopped posting stories that are totally, completely, absolutely misleading. How does this come under 'Spyware'? Has the definition of 'Sypware' changed? Ridiculous!
"Windows has no advantage over Linux" is a pretty strong statement. Granted, I am a much of a Linux fan as the next guy on Slashdot, use linux most of the time at home, but there are some things I just don't see a lay user being able to do on Linux as easily as on Windows.
A small example from last week: downloading snaps from my new digital camera: took 10 minutes on Windows, an hour on Linux. I doubt an average user would even be able to do it.

Yes, it is a tool (to commute), but requires you to maintain it. You need to make an oil change every 2000 mi, check filers, fill gas...
Just because it is a means to an end doesn't mean it doesn't require routine maintenance.
...and it makes sense that the two most populous countries are the ones competing. After-all, there is only so much space available on Earth...
