  1. Re:Kimagure Orange Road on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

No I haven't seen it. I remember reading the translation of the novel on some one's website. It seemed to be a bit of a rehash of the themes in the TV series except that the characters were older. The character designs are really different. I guess they have to reflect the "growing up" of the characters.

  2. Kimagure Orange Road on Essential Anime · · Score: 2

One of my all time favorites is KOR. Besides, Bubblegum Crisis, KOR cemented my addiction to anime (and made me go out and by an LD player). It had it all - cute girls, a love triangle, and esp powers. What more could you ask for in anime? Back in the day, I must admit to having a slight crush on Ayukawa Madoka (what normal nerd wouldn't?). The KOR movie that resolved the series had an ending that was more realistic than most tv series (or movies) that I've seen. It was emotionally draining to say the least.

The complete tv series, OAV, and movie are available from those great guys at Animeigo.

    Some other favs:

Record of Lodoss Wars - this is what the old d&d tv cartoon series should have been.

Tenchi Muyo - Very funny. Sasami-chan is the only cute character though.

Ranma 1/2 - slap stick at it's best.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Story is really engaging.

Vampire Princess Muyo - Spooky. The soundtrack is really cool.

  3. Re:software engineering is dead on The Pragmatic Programmer · · Score: 2

I think that we need another book on software engineering. Or perhaps, more books that serve to make engineering software less voodoo and more science.

The idea of engineering software is important because as systems become larger and more complex, there needs to be some way to manage that complexity. Also, some problem domains require a more formal development process due to stringent performance requirements (e.g., life-critical systems). Would you be comfortable if someone "hacked" the controller software on a radiation therapy machine or perhaps the flight systems of the Space Shuttle? Software engineering is not just about programming, it's about designing, programming, and testing software systems. The whole ball of wax.

As for the idea that software engineering is dead, I disagree. It's still a very young discipline as compared to other engineering fields (Electrical, Mech, etc.). I think that there's a difference between software as art (and programmer as artist) and software as a science (and programmer as an engineer). And there's room in this world for both view points.

  4. PCG-Z505R on Review of the Sony Vaio PCG-X9 · · Score: 1

It just came in today and I've just finished installing linux (rh6.1). Not a single problem thanks to others who have done it on similar models.

This is my first portable system and I'm quite happy with it. I've never really been interested in portables since to me, the compromises were just too great. Sure, there are the so called desktop replacements but these things are just too damned heavy. For me, anything over 4lbs travel weight is *not* portable.

    Good:
    - lightweight (3.5lbs)
    - thin (1"")
    - decent screen size

    Bad:
    - integrated modem is of the winmodem variety (ugh!) Are winmodems cheaper? Is that why oems don't put in a real modem? Bottom line is I had to fork over more cash for a 3com pc card modem.
    - integrated ethernet requires a dongle (one more thing to lose)
    - battery life is kind of crappy (a little over an hour with power management). There's a 4 hour battery available but it's $399!!

Finally, I got a Zoom backpack from Spire instead of the traditional briefcase type bags. Very cool and practical.

Now, I need to save up for an Aibo...

  5. One step closer... on HP's OpenMail to support Linux · · Score: 1

I just got the client and am testing it out now. All the basic functionality (compared to the NT/CC:mail client) seems to be there. The GUI is kind of unresponsive but that seems typical of Motif apps that I've used in the past. But at least I'm one step closer to not having to ever log into my NT box. Rockin'!
