I agree on most counts. When you're an ideal manager, your job is to shield your employees from the bullshit from above as much as possible, so they can get their work done as well as possible. That may sometimes require a status report or meeting or something so that you can report to the muckity mucks upstream on what's going on. But it shouldn't be a replacement for involvement with your employees. If you don't know what they're working on and roughly where they are in the task or what problems they're facing, you're doing it wrong.
No, this is the kind of misunderstanding that can happen when we have such a litigious society that people think that threatening lawsuits and criminal charges against people is de rigeur, even if you have no clue what you're talking about. I completely understand someone lashing out when threatened like that.
Which means that those of us who do think and analyze can always depend on those who can't to pay us to do things for them that they'd be capable of doing themselves if they weren't lazy/stupid;)
Really? Are you working every second of the time that you're in the office? Not posting on Slashdot, ever?
I call bullshit. It will save money because they'll be charged for less electricity. You won't lose any general productivity having to turn the machine on and off. Hell, implement WOL and have your IT department turn the machine on for you before you get there, or suspend/hibernate the machine so it uses a lot less energy overnight and still starts up much faster.
Most people here use laptops... it's a lot harder to get the battery out, so they end up shutting theirs down properly. But it's amazing how many meetings I go to and see someone's battery give out in the middle of it because they forgot to plug it in while they've been working on it all morning.
Another is the inability of people to send me IMs when the system is suspended.
The SSH I'll buy, but Instant Messages? Really? Isn't that kind of what email is designed for, so people can send you messages you'll get when you get back to your computer?
It may be "Americanized" to you, but I have big hands (I'm tall, not fat, to preempt any fat nerd jokes), and with the padded covers the wiimote is much more comfortable to hold for long periods than it is without it. I know some of my friends like it without it, but hey, maybe you Aussies just have dainty hands;)
No, it's really not designed to be thrown or swung. The remote is meant to be held in the hand, and your hand moved. Anything your hand can't do, the remote isn't meant to do. The safety strap is just that... it's meant to keep the remote from flying off if your cheetos and sweat soaked hands lose their grip. It's NOT meant as something to take constant abuse or strain. It's like those safety chains that are often required for trailers... you don't expect them to take the place of the hitch, but if the hitch fails, they're there for safety.
Which is why I'm going to require that my little nerdling-to-be also go outside with me and learn how to do that stuff. It's not mutually exclusive, being a nerd and being somewhat athletic.
So what you're saying is that even if he doesn't have perfect clairvoyance as far as events are concerned, William Gibson really gets people, better than most people even understand themselves? I'd agree with that.
A woman who had never read Shakespeare went to a performance of Hamlet and complained, "I don't know what anybody sees in that play. It's just a bunch of cliches strung together."
My Grandpa learned how to play Sudoku before he died. You don't absorb as quickly as a younger person, but it most certainly is possible, and it has been shown to be very beneficial for the health of older people to keep learning and keep an active mind.
Crichton created great stories and characters, but his grounding in science was tenuous at best, especially for being a doctor. None of his writings stand up to scientific scrutiny.
That would be validating her initial desire to bring charges against him for doing something illegal. She wasn't sure what, but she was sure he was corrupting the kids, and she was gonna get the cops in on it. I can't blame him for being slightly pissed off at both her ignorance AND malice, especially after she's the only one who actually did anything illegal by stealing that property from the student.
I dunno. She threatened legal action if she could find something illegal about it. I'm not inclined to treat someone that starts out an exchange with a threat very nicely. They are obviously not a reasonable person to begin with, and as the only thing they've proven that they understand is force, show them that you have a much bigger stick than they do.
Stupid programmer tricks exist in every language. Sometimes the flexibility of C is very nice to have, and there aren't many replacement languages that have the same power. A hand saw is not a complete replacement for a circular saw without a guard. One is much more dangerous, for sure, but that doesn't mean it can't do a better job if you know what you're doing with it.
None of this is trying to say C is a great introductory language. I'd rather people start with some simple scripting language like bash, perl, python, something along those lines. Get results, not have to worry about compiling, etc.
And yet they throw genetics, chemistry, physiology and all kinds of other things at introductory biology students. Then they get to the specialized classes as they go further. The same thing should happen with CS.
You most certainly ARE allowed to store the info. I used to work for a company that processed credit cards quite often. You cannot store it after you complete the purchase, but you HAVE to store it at least temporarily before submission to the CC processing company. You can even submit them in batches if you want. There more certainly are rules, but you still have to be able to finish the purchase.
Pizza won't get you or more than a "That'll be $15 please, sir" as far as social contact. And even if the pizza girl is hard up, she's got better offers than that;)
They're just an evolutionary dead-end... just gotta wait for them to die. At least, I hope none of them ever breed. Can't see it as being terribly likely myself;)
A lot of the reason that Betamax died was because the tapes couldn't hold full length films initially. Standard Beta tapes were 60 minutes, vs 3 hours for VHS. For the "technical superiority" of Beta, VHS was much superior in general usability for the vast majority of consumers. I mean, if you had the choice of recording only 60 minutes of HD, or 180 minutes of SD, which one would be more useful to you, as a person who watches movies, not as a technologist?
The problem is when the layperson THINKS that it's valid science. Then you get knee-jerk retarded legislation voted through because people are stupid.

Her threatening that she was going to figure out what illegal thing he's doing and bring charges is most definitely malicious.
That would be validating her initial desire to bring charges against him for doing something illegal. Did you sue him? Did your parents? Because there is no way that should stand. That's theft.
