Laptops I have had it work perfectly fine. OEM machines can be pretty hit and miss, the SFF ones seem to fair better (I'm guessing it's because most of them have everything integrated into the motherboard. As for homebuilt PCs, I have never gotten it to work right - some of them won't even go into standby mode. Or if they do, they leave the harddrives spinning (wtf?). I just end up turning them off when they aren't needed.
Well, I haven't been living in Japan for years, but longer than 3 months. all the power strips (Japanese call them octopuses, heh) I see for sale are like this though. It sounds like you think I'm talking about wall sockets, which no, don't have switches. You can see two examples of power strips I've bought here: http://www.studyinginjapan.com/gallery/apartment
However, those little orange lights when the switches are on are going to eat into the savings from switching things off when they aren't being used. Still, a step in the right direction.
If it's not an LCD, then there's an 'electron gun' at the back of the tube. It needs to be hot enough so that the electrons jump off it, and they can be formed into a beam that can scan the picture out 50-60 times a second.
If they didn't keep that hot, then it would take a minute or so to warm up and you'd have to wait. It has to be quite hot, hundreds of degrees, but it's in a vacuum, so it doesn't take very much to keep it up to temp, just a few watts.
How come my CRT monitors (which I turn on and off with a power strip) only take seconds to warm up when I turn them on? What you say may be true - especially for older TVs. But it would seem unnessecary for newer TVs (and monitors).
Why don't you like Quicktime for videos? Honest question here - I like it well enough - it plays the stuff, and is a pretty clean interface. Feel free to enlighten me with your two cents - I'm curious.
Why do I hate Quicktime for Windows? Lets see:
1. It's ugly. 2. It has a crappy, nonstandard interface. 3. It's slow and bloated. 4. It constantly tries to take over your system and hijack your file extensions. 5. It wants to have an icon in your system tray and have some process running all the time. 6. No full screen. 7. It nags you about buying Quicktime Pro everytime you open it.
Of course, 1-3 are pretty common complaints about most media players, but 4-7 are just inexcusable.
They've said that it WILL dual-boot. Apple has no problem with you running Windows or Linux on their hardware. They DO have a problem with you running OSX on non-Apple hardware.
I wouldn't count on it. Just because Apple said they won't stop you from dual booting doesn't mean they'll make it easy either. I'm sure Linux will be running on the things in some form or another the same day they hit the streets, but it's also possible that drivers for Windows may never be released for the MacTels.
Intentionally crippling their devices to make them sucky-- that doesn't sound so smart.
In case you haven't noticed, Apple has a long history of doing exactly that. Things like limiting the maximum amount of memory that can be installed in their lower end machines, disabling the dual head capabilities of the video cards they put in the iBook/iMac, no internal expandibility except on their Power line, using slow harddrives in the Mini, etc.
And I suppose that you also liked getting your phone service from Ma Bell too? Sure, that was simple and easy too: You either went with Ma Bell and paid her rates or you didn't have a phone.
The Apple Video Adaptor [apple.com] enables you to connect your mac mini to a regular television. (Sorry if the link doesn't work. It's from the apple store.) It costs 19.99 US.
You're link works, but you're chosen adaptor is going to be pretty useless if you have a Mac Mini, being that it's for computers with mini-VGA out.
In what ways can you tinker with Linux that you cannot tinker with OS X? In fact, OS X gives you far more to tinker with because not only do you have the keys to the kernal and the BSD layer and X11, but also to everything that Apple provides. That answer makes no sense whatsoever.
Huh? With Linux you have the source code, which means you can tinker around with anything and everything. OSX doesn't even come close.
I'll agree with you that Mission to Mars is a pretty bad movie. But the Worst Movie Ever? It seems pretty clear to me that you haven't see The Day After Tomorrow or Core.
Snob factor. Right now, the purpose of a hybrid is less to save the environment than to feel good about saving the environment. If the car just looks like any other car, nobody will notice, and then how are you going to feel superior?
There is the Ford Escape hybrid, Honda Civic hybrid, and Honda Accord hybrid, which all pretty much look just like their conventional counterparts. Of course, if you think the Civic, Accord, and Escape are ugly anyway then this won't help you much.
It's a shame that those mp3 CD players haven't upgraded to DVD actually.
They sort of exist. Some models of those portable DVD players supposedly can handle MP3 disks. Granted, it would be kind of big to haul around, and I would guess that most of them would suck pretty hard as just a music player. But it might be something to consider if you are already planning on hauling a DVD player with you on a trip.
Apple throw the kitchen sink in there in a way that makes it invisible. The video functionality if the ipod is completely invisible unless you use it. The basic behavior of the ipod is pretty much unchanged, except it has gotten a little glossier over the years.
Well, the FM tuner, timers, alarms, ability to speed up and slow down playback, and other features I don't use much on my iRiver are pretty invisible too. They don't get in the way of it operating as a music player, so they are easily ignored (you have to press and hold a button if you want to get to them). But unlike the iPod, they are there if I want them.
He could have browsed from a live CD and not left a trail. I wonder how many crimes are being solved because criminals don't know how to take a few simple security steps?
That won't help if law enforcement subpoenas Google, or any other website for that matter (yeah, I know that in this case Google wasn't involved, but I could easily imagine it happening). Probably the best thing to do is use someone else's open access point, with your live CD on your laptop.
Regards to markup being your major opposition to buying Apple: what's wrong with the mini? Dirt cheap as far as computing goes and a very capable system to boot.
Mac Mini is dirt cheap? $499 is not dirt cheap. Dirt cheap is those $99 AMD Socket A boxes that Fry's likes to sell occasionally. Whether or not those are capable is another issue entirely.
Anyone out there have better luck with hibernate?

No kidding. The standby LEDs are probably more useful as an indicator that you forgot to unplug the stereo/TV/VCR/whatever anyway.
Assuming you're not getting up several times through the night to open the fridge, why not unplug it too?
There is always the danger of forgetting to plug it back in come morning.

In other words, you're flat out wrong. Also, hardly anybody on slashdot (yourself excluded) enjoys "renting" DRMed music.
As opposed to the people on slashdot who seem to have no problems "buying" DRM'd music? What are you actually buying anyway?

No, in Britian they shoot you at the tube station, not the airport. Duh.

Some of us like our freedom.

So, there you go, just those five things. :)

Til that battery goes dead. A V8 gas hog will look cheap.
New replacement battery: $3000.
Low end cost for a new SUV with a big honkin' V8: $30000.
I think you're off by a few orders of magnitude here.
Why are gas-guzzling SUVs evil but gas-guzzling minivans are not?
Because minivans are practical (even if large) family vehicles, and SUVs are not?
Besides, the typical minivan gets better mileage than the typical SUV. Most SUV's are down there with those big V8 RWD conversion vans.

Quicktime Alternative comes highly recommended. There simply is no reason to install the full blown Quicktime application in Windows.
There also exists Real Alternative.

If you've filed bankruptcy or are considering it, I would caution against getting engaged.
Why not? When she leaves and takes half, she won't be getting much, now will she?
Why the hell would someone buy Burnout for the xbox???
The PS2 version has the best graphics by far.
Because they have an XBox and not a PS2?

The Mac detecs the DVD, and runs the DVD Player program which then tries to play the DVD. There's no executable code on the DVD involved. You savvy?
And what if the DVD movie was designed to exploit some buffer overflow in iDVD and then run some code?
