My theory on a lot of this is that the goals of both business and the stock buying public have changed. Originally everyone was seeking a reasonable profit while keeping things like local employment, community activities, worker loyalty and other commendable traits in mind. However, during the 90's the goal changed to MAXIMUM profit. Everyone wants to squeeze out those extra few tenths of a percent in growth because that's what the stock market and the CEO's of the world expect. Companies have to constantly increase the dividend and profit, not just return a dependable profit. To be rock solid and steady is interpreted as failure in today's climate.
Interesting that Shania Twain ( Queen Autotune ) lip sync'd her performance but No Doubt / Sting actually played live. Nice to see some musicians still actully know how to perform.
You're correct. Perl is a fine option. There are other third party engines as well including python and REXX. I was just listing the "in the box" type stuff.
>>And soon we'll have a scripting language
You do have a scripting language, in fact you've got three in the box:
1. DOS bat/cmd files.
2. VBSCRIPT via Windows Script Host
3. JSCRIPT via Windows Script Host
Check out http://msdn.microsoft.com/scripting
If you happen to have IIS installed, take a look at the adsutil.vbs script to get some ideas of the things you can do.
>>As a kid I could always hear the flyback transformers in TVs and video screen.
I can hear that stuff as well. Actually, I'm not so sure I can hear it directly. I've had tinnitus since I was very young. Quite rooms drive me insance because all I can hear is the ringing of my ears. However, when very high frequency noise is present, I actually hear the pitches of my tinnitus changing. It may be all psychological, but I perceive the changes.
The brain is a complicated piece, MP3s aren't going to change it.
Heck, I didn't even know this was news. I picked up a 52x Memorex CDRW drive at Sam's club a week ago for a system I'm building. I had no idea I was on the cutting edge.

Reminds me of the old joke: Q: "What are a rednecks last words?" A: "Hey ya'll, watch this!"

Is "clueless boss" an oxymoron? Nah, it's just redundant.
