My bank, a large, regional bank serving all of the coastal states from MD to SC, recently redesigned their web site. It used to be that their site was unuseable with anything but IE 6 (not just poorly rendered, things flat didn't work). I'm not saying it's indicative of any change they perceived in browsing habits, but it could be. Then again, it may just be a coincidence.

I fail to see why this is in reply to my post. The only thing I stated that TLS is used for is protection of user authentication credentials. In and of itself, TLS doesn't really enhance message source authenticity. -tom

TLS does not directly ensure sender authenticity, at all. Authentication provides the authenticity piece. All that TLS does is protects the authentication session , and optionally the message contents, from prying eyes.

SMTP-to-SMTP TLS, using third-party certificates (Verisign, Thawte, et. al.) allows one server to Verify that another server has been vetted by the third party authority. It doesn't necessarily say that "this is a trustworthy, non-spam source".

And, of course, unless you're using quantum encryption or other similarly dynamic crypt system, all the have to do is compute the keys used to create the messages and the computational horsepower required for each subsequent crack goes down radically. :(

Hmm... do you really think that this will do anything to Echelon other than use more compute cycles? Do you really doubt that the operators of Echelon have enough compute cycles to crack SSL encrypted emails?

  6. Re:5, 10, 15 years down the road on Dark Fiber: A Case In Point · · Score: 1

Even though dark fibre is laid in the same conduits, it may not be part of the same bundle. In the event where someone wipes out a bundle, (or worse, an entire conduit), do you really think they are going to take the time to ensure that all of the unused fibres are still viable? Not likely. Especially if said event has wiped out longdistance service in half a state.

So, I wouldn't put a terribly long shelf life on that dark fibre, especially in metropolitan areas with -any- amount of construction going on.
