The transition to an alternative of SMTP can't be compared to the release of Apache 2.0. Apache 2.0 does the same job to previous versions except better, ie serves web pages via HTTP 1.0/1.1.
A new version of SMTP could require updating all E-Mail related software (client and server) and that's not a small chore.
