Well, I currently use my Linux box for everything too. I have a ATI TV Wonder card for TV (XawTV to watch and record things) and then use my DVD drive with SBLive 5.1/Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 for Dolby Digital Surround Sound. I've got how to's on my site with config files and screenshots of this stuff. Works for me.
So when do the CPUs come out at a $1/GHz?:)
Guess we can be glad they are not $1/Mhz. But I remember working on 8MHz machines too so maybe then it would have been ok.
There is a lot to be said about what the "users" like and what corps push. Granted, often they are one in the same but not always.
I realize that/. is full of OSS and GPL guys, I myself am one too. Bottom line is users want something that works and is easy for them to install. They don't care if the format is open or not. However, what we could help do is help educate them on the reasons for using open standards and OSS. Users also see price tags. So using a GPLd open standard that is free for everyone to use will, in the end, make the users happy.
Just like the issues with.GIF files. Unisoft may have made millions in licenses and fees, but they also helped to push to.PNG format. I for one don't use any.GIFs at all. Moved my MP3s to OGG etc. Just one person, but I also have a large "user" base that I infulence.
Question again, is why?
I have Xine working great. It plays DVDs (LibDVDread,LibDVDNav,LibDVDcss) and I have AC3 Passthrough on my SBLive 5.1 to a DTT3500 DTS Dolby Digital Surround Sound System. It took a bit to get everything compile together but it works great. Got a link on my site for a simple how-to with a screen shot. http://www.linuxlogin.com/linux/emu10k1.php
And yes, Xine will play AVIs too, about the only thing I think we are really missing is Quick time.
The easist way to get Mozilla to use rpms that had support for XFT (AA Fonts).
for 1.2.1
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozill a1.2.1/Red_Hat_8x_RPMS/xft/
Of course, you could always download the source and compile it with --enable-xft.:)
As for my own pref, I like Luxi Sans. AA support looks great on mine, and even the menus use the default font. Nice when you are running 1600x1200+!
Great, now I can build this and protect my house from a cruise missle attack...oh wait, they have backup systems to work on laser or video. I SCREWED!

SCSI man, SCSI.
Get 8 per controller, minus one for the controller itself. So get a dual card and have 16 devices (14 usable)
I've had machines with 24 CDROMs as server. Most I've ever done with SCSI is 12...but then again it's perfect for RAID.
Actually, bit 4 bits = nibble 2 nibbles = byte 1024 Bytes = kilobyte 1024 kilobytes = Megabyte 1024 MBytes = 1 Gigbyte 1024 Gigbytes = 1 Terabyte etc.

Wonder if this will be included in the 3D Printer cartridges....
Can't we just print the chips???
Just think, now you can not only shop online, but you can forget shipping charges and print off your items in real time....
:)
Only question is, sure the printer is cheap if not free, but how much do those dumb cartridges cost?!?
And also all those porn and sex toy sites, talk about more 'silicon'.
