...that I can pick up from blockbuster's used VHS bin for $9 --Fantasia? StartWars? ET? Please...
Can you imagine the backlash if every DVD player sold was recalled for a firmware upgrade to resecure the format?
The movie industry needs to learn from the experience of the RIAA--you can't stop copying, and you are losing revenues if you hold titles from DVD release. Both the music recording industy and Hollywood had record profits last year...stop the anti-copying madness (and I don't even own a DVD player!)
Your highminded defense of Singer overlooks one implication for the unborn, the newly borne, the infirmed elderly, and the severely disabled: applying Singer's strictly utilitarian philosophy, the "right" to die becomes the duty to die.
me too...Enlightenment 0.16 running on top of Gnome, fast as I could want, and more eye candy than "The Matrix." X-Windows performance depends hugely on your video card, as well--if you can use accelerated drivers, it makes a huge difference. I have a RivaTNT2 and it was "ok." Then Nvidia released accelerated drivers for Linux and it is much quicker. Riva128 cards are dirt cheap and well supported under XFree86-3.5.x SVGA server.
Okay, it helps that this is running on a Celeron550MHz/128MB...but E looks better than Win98 regardless.
1. "My original column was a troll; I was clueless on purpose. 2. If you flamed me, you fell for it, so I'm still smarter than you. 3. I'm actually rooting for Linux to overtake Windows, I just don't think that an open system with such fierce defenders (the flamers) can do it. 4. I still have absolutely no clue, and Emacs makes my eyes water.
Re:Linux is not the fastest. No excuses.

Seriously, trying to help a fellow newbie--have you done the pnpdump/isapnp thing for the modem and/or soundcard? worked for me (but I had to hunt for it) with RH5.2 and 6.0. RH6.0, btw, detects isapnp.conf settings during boot--you don't need to run any init scripts anymore. Just make sure that you pick the right resource settings (and telly your mb bios that you are NOT using a PnP OS or comparing your win irq/dma stuff will only confuse you).

your argument would carry a lot more weight if you didn't hide behind the "AC" posting. Register @ Slashdot and people might then read what you say.
