Developing "inner space" is good and all, and ultimately it may be the best solution, but assuming that it is possible at all, we do not yet have the technology to do it, and given the circumstances it seems that it is better to try to do what we know can be done now (if only will, effort, and dollars were there) than to wait for a transhumanist future. We all have been notoriously bad at predicting the future. (where are my anti-grav boots!?). And there is no reason that transhumanist ambitions cannot be incorporated into a mars colonization project. In fact, I presumed they would be.
