  1. Something fishy there? on Australian Federal Police Raid Major ISPs · · Score: 3, Funny
It seems strange to me (as an Aussie) that our Federal Police would have nothing better to do than the legwork for a music industry lawsuit.

    Chasing child pr0n-ography - yep.

Keeping Australia free from terror - yep

Those sort of raids are all about upholding current laws

But chasing up a bunch of mp3 downloaders?

Pull the other leg, it plays JingleBells.mp3

  2. Where's the Humanity in HR these days? on Pre-Interview Organization Analysis Design Tests? · · Score: 1
Back in high school, we all had to do these aptitude tests (several gazillion questions) and the result was a "confidential report to parents" listing a single occupation each student was suited for, plus a short list of similar careers for parents to consider guiding their kids into...

That was all fine and dandy, except mine came back "debt collector". At the time, I was about 5'8" and 100 pounds wringing wet!

So-called human resources is all very well, except they seem to resist any opportunity to deal with real, live, 100% people.

Eliminating job candidates solely on the basis of a few dozen generalised (and subjective) personality questions is sheer lunacy, to me.

In my current job (I'm an editor and sometime cartographer) the process ran like this... 1) Long list of candidates culled from CVs and application letters (based on apparent qualifications)

    2) Those were then brought into the office and given a small prac exam - working with genuine copy and to see how each applicant approached the various tasks.

    3) The usual shortlist for interviews, all face to face and extremely relaxed.

Looking back, I really liked the opportunity to show my future employers what I could do, instead of being a score number on some impersonal questionnaire!

  3. Lighwave pollution? on Using Visible Light for Data Transfer · · Score: 3, Interesting
My first thought was about the possible effect on the lightwaves from thousands of blinkenlights if this became the next really big thing...

But after reading the article, and seeing how they'd use LEDs (they don't say how big though), and the bandwidths involved, the lights would seem to be constanly on, do you think?

That'd mean no real lightwave pollution (it's all line-of-sight) and little visual pollution or distractions due to thousands of flashing lights?

Of course, I still have to wonder about the effects of different weather. I see it'll still work with a hand moving in front of it, but what about heavy smog days, or blizzards? Would torrential rain make problems with light refraction??

I guess it beats training swallows to carry coconuts engraved with data packets from rooftop to rooftop (they could grip 'em by the 'usks)

Hats off to the Kiwis for this one though, it sounds pretty exciting :)

Woohoo! I can't wait to see my IT Manager scaling our office building to deal with pigeons nesting on the transmitter!

  4. We're helping plug the Good Doctor as we *speak*.. on Dr. Pepper Tries New Astroturf Method · · Score: 4, Interesting
Has anyone stopped to think how this article is giving Dr Pepper a really thorough promotion? I mean, how many times has the product in question been mentioned in this article on /. so far? I heard a theory once that if J. Random Consumer is confronted with a name 7 times in quick succession, it'll stick!

I don't drink the stuff, but I can guarantee I'll be thinking about it all day *grimace*

Now there's an interesting way to advertise - get your product made the subject of a /. story... we've been had!

Fly, my pretties! Storm those blogs and slashdot them to hell and back!!

  6. take a chill pill, *dude* on DALnet For Chatting, Not File Sharing · · Score: 1
I can't begin to tell you where you're so very wrong about your *rights* on IRC, but here goes... It's attitudes and tantrums like that which brought DALnet to the brink and forced them to introduce the new rules.

Yes, in an ideal world the internet (as a whole) belongs to all - but at this point in history, the individual boxes that link to make the internet belong to private citizens and businesses, and they sure as hell don't like having their bandwidth killed by a senseless DDoS.

IRC (as a community) belongs to all of us, m'man, but the actual servers belong to someone(s) and we have to be good guests - or find somewhere else to play.

I've seen rants like yours before "how DARE you kick me out of channel for "

FYI, I know of some DALfolk who may not be pleased with the new rules, but are at least relocating their fileserv chans to another network, with nothing but good grace

I suggest all we can do is make the best of a bad situation caused by an outside party, and if DALnet admin's new policy saves that network, so be it (IMO).

BTW do you have to *shout* in posts? Learn some manners, and you may go far, dude :)

  7. Re:All major IRC networks will be doing this soon on DALnet For Chatting, Not File Sharing · · Score: 1
Different strokes for different folks, man! The thing people keep forgetting is that acessing Dalnet(or anywhere else) is a privilege, not a right - they make the house rules, and you and I are free to leave if we don't like them.

If Efnet suits your IRC requirements, then go there. Stay there. It's as simple as that.

I personally don't use IRC for warez or MP3s (though I accept others look for those very features in a network), and Dalnet suits me best for chat. God, I'd hate to see an entire network get toasted cause some packet monkey throws a tantrum when they're told they have to find another playground.

I think Dalnet is trying to do the best for as many people as it can in making this decision.

I'm standing with Dalnet on this one, because they've improved the quality of my life for the last 8 years (yes, I do have a RL outside IRC, so no need to waste flame) and now they deserve some support in this.

  8. Long Live DALNet! on DALnet For Chatting, Not File Sharing · · Score: 1

Last I looked, the 'C' in IRC stood for chat... DALNet's always been my IRC network of choice, and the recent DoS attacks have really been pissing me off. So, kudos to the DALNet brass for making a tough decision and acting to save the network - and eternal damnation for the little bastards responsible for trying to destroy a cornerstone of the 'net (may they be forced to live out the remainer of their skript-kiddying lives with 2400baud modems) I know the fileshare chan users aren't going to like the new rules, but hey - that's what P2P is for, isn't it? Flame On!
