While not quite as spiffy, using JACK with a number of different JACK-aware applications is quite powerful.

    Example:

    Hydrogen for drums
(amsynth || zynaddsubfx) + (midi keyboard || midi sequencer) for midi stuff
    Ardour to record everything
    JACK Rack for effects

Or you can try using "more integrated" something like Rosegarden or MuSE

Of course, getting JACK to run well can be a huge pain...

  5. San Jose on Making War On Light Pollution · · Score: 3, Informative
In San Jose, all the white streetlamps were replaced with low pressure Sodium lamps so that light pollution would not impact research at nearby Lick Observatory so much. Not only are they not as bright, but (more importantly) they're monochromatic and can easily be filtered. If more cities adopted these, we'd be able to see the stars much better (with the right optical filter, of course).

Unfortunately, a lot of citizens of San Jose want white lights for some reason (especially car dealerships), so I don't know how much longer that'll last.

  8. Re:correct me if I'm wrong on Radiation Absorbing Mineral Found In the Arctic · · Score: 1

Lead has several radioactive isotopes. In particular, lead 210 has a halflife of 22 years. For this reason, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment has to use "ancient lead" inside of its layers of lead (the point is that nothing should be able to touch the detector, other than dark matter, of course). Ancient lead, which is over 500 years old, no longer contains any sizable amounts of lead 210, and is thus suitable for CDMS. Apparently, they got their ancient lead from a sunken Roman galleon. Anyway, since you didn't specify that you're using ancient lead, I assume you're being bombarded by radiation like the rest of us =P. Oh, and don't eat bananas, since they contain radioactive isotopes of potassium.
