In San Jose, all the white streetlamps were replaced with low pressure Sodium lamps so that light pollution would not impact research at nearby Lick Observatory so much. Not only are they not as bright, but (more importantly) they're monochromatic and can easily be filtered. If more cities adopted these, we'd be able to see the stars much better (with the right optical filter, of course).
Unfortunately, a lot of citizens of San Jose want white lights for some reason (especially car dealerships), so I don't know how much longer that'll last.
Almost all of the area in the new imagery is actually in California (around Bridgeport). Though I guess it is close to Nevada and is Nevada-like terrain.
Lead has several radioactive isotopes. In particular, lead 210 has a halflife of 22 years. For this reason, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment has to use "ancient lead" inside of its layers of lead (the point is that nothing should be able to touch the detector, other than dark matter, of course). Ancient lead, which is over 500 years old, no longer contains any sizable amounts of lead 210, and is thus suitable for CDMS. Apparently, they got their ancient lead from a sunken Roman galleon. Anyway, since you didn't specify that you're using ancient lead, I assume you're being bombarded by radiation like the rest of us =P. Oh, and don't eat bananas, since they contain radioactive isotopes of potassium.
Clicking on the link to the group f**k Islam takes me to the Facebook homepage, but clicking on the other link works. The f**k islam group is also linked from the petition, but it too takes me to the Facebook home page. Looks to me that the group was removed...
I wonder if it would be feasible for someone to set up a server where one would upload an odf file which would be opened in Word by some macro and then saved as a.doc file by Word and sent back to the uploader. Presumably, that would allow perfect format conversion.
Gnumeric seems to support error bars.
Well, perhaps if Apple allowed anyone else to use their DRM, then this wouldn't be a problem.
On the other hand, if you use a distribution optimized for musical work (e.g. PlanetCCRMA, Ubuntu Studio), then it should work right out of the box.
While not quite as spiffy, using JACK with a number of different JACK-aware applications is quite powerful.
Example:
Hydrogen for drums
(amsynth || zynaddsubfx) + (midi keyboard || midi sequencer) for midi stuff
Ardour to record everything
JACK Rack for effects
Or you can try using "more integrated" something like Rosegarden or MuSE
Of course, getting JACK to run well can be a huge pain...

So easy, even a caveman (read: RMS) can do it!

Don't historians need to use statistics or something? And not-so-introductory statistics requires calculus.
I respectfully disagree.

What about passengers? Buses? Trains? Bicycles? (ok, talking on the phone on a bicycle is pretty difficult/dangerous)
Better than burning it
Yeah, it's probably md5 or something, but that doesn't matter because you only need a one-way hash for a local app.
Stanford does MAC filtering. -A Stanford student.
