It's exactly this attitude that prevents young people with actual intelligence *AND* real-world experience from being treated equally well as other employees who may even be vastly inferior to the younger one in skill.

I'm in agreement with you there. If I had my druthers, I'd have a nice 5-channel Energy system with a kick-ass sub. But I live in an apartment, so I have two Boston Acoustic 4" car speakers from an old install which I've carefully placed inside cardboard boxes with spring-clip speaker terminals on the back.

They sound great at every volume level that I would be willing top run them at without getting evicted :)

I did, however, splurge on a receiver and headphones. Headphones are quite important if you watch/listen by yourself in an apartment. I am proud of my $300 Sony MDR-F1s. Best sub-$500 headphones I've heard (the next model up is probably better as I've had these for 18 months or so).

Like I said, I also splurged on a $500-ish Kenwood receiver on sale for about $300... It's got DTS and Dolby 5.1, etc... I figured it was way more than I need but would facilitate nicer speakers when all my neighbors die :)

    Argh... slashdot harfed my post.

Actually, that is incorrect. In the Windows <=3.11 days, Microsoft publically admitted that approximately 50% of their market penetration was due to piracy, and therefore largely responsible for their initial success. Once Windows 3.x had established a market, then and only then, did it begin to be included with everything.

I distinctly remember the days when you bought a computer that didn't have an OS on it.

First, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to make a good disc-based game system. Get a really fast drive. This is easy as sin these days, with 48x CD drives a dime a dozen. The hardware available for embedded systems is probably even more advanced.

As for the discs themselves, Nintendo is going with a custom solution of 3-inch DVD-type discs. They'll hold a lot of data, be secure, and since they have a smaller diameter than CD/DVDs, they will have faster average access times.

I'd say their "lack of experience making disc based games" hasn't hindered them at all. In fact, it may have helped because it hasn't tied them to any previous (aka outdated) technologies.

Second, Nintendo has many more franchises than just Pokemon; The entire Mario cast, Link/Zelda, Donkey/Diddy Kong, Samus (Metroid), as well as a great track record for making games that are fun to play with other people, not huddled up alone in a pimple-cultivating stupor.

But you have to remember that since the X-box is a closed system with EXTREMELY low overhead compared to PCs, that 700mhz processor is going to deliver a lot more performance than it would as part of a PC running with a non-multimedia-enhanced BIOS with sluggish FSB/memory, an operating system which has to support legacy applications, and a graphics subsystem loaded with possibly fautly third-party drivers.

Also, you aren't going to be rendering at 1600x1200 on a TV, unless you're doing so to sample down for FSAA. Non-HD-TVs can't even pull 640x480 perfectly if I remember correctly.

I've been a huge TMBG fan for over ten years, which is about half of my life (Scary thought, no?). I've heard the band evolve from two guys with a Dr. Rhythm drum machine to a full band with a horn section, to a powerhouse of rock. I've heard lo-fi, hi-fi, no-fi (wax cylinders), children's songs, Movie/TV theme songs, and god knows what else.

My question is, what's next? What surprises do you guys have up your sleeves for those of us who are always waiting to hear you do something new and rip the music industry a new asshole with your revolutionary rock stylings?

Do you plan to continue making music for Hollywood? Are there going to be any more side projects (I simply loved State Songs)? What's next for Brooklyn's Ambassadors of Love?

  24. Re:So when does Calif. go to two line license plat on FCC Considering 10-Digit Dialing [UPDATED] · · Score: 2
The space is not a unique character. The license plate "MON KEY" is identical to the license plate "M ONKEY" and therefore the existence of the space in the allowed characters does not increase the number of possible unique combinations.

In California, the number of available plates is further limited by the fact that there are only two standard issue license plate formats on the road. The six digit plate, only seen on older cars, which uses the format XXX111 where X is a letter and 1 is a number, and the seven digit plates which are currently issued using the format 1XXX111.

Given those limitations, and the space issue, I think your figure is a tad bit too high. For instance, a 7 digit license plate cannot choose all 7 digits from a pool of 37 characters, it can choose 3 digits from a pool of 26 and 4 digits from a pool of 10. I'm too lazy to do my own calculations, though, so feel free to flame me :)
