I don't think this should affect your level of optimism / pessimism about humanity's future. For the most part, the real world will go about its business independently of whether or not Star Trek episodes cover a certain topic.

My standing desk consists of a wide board laid on top of two 5 gallon buckets which costs a total of $10-15? Why would you ever pay $700-$1000???? Are we so far away from simple ingenuity?
I was referring to adjustable standing desks. I.e., for the use case where one alternates between standing and sitting as his computer, multiple times per day.
Standing desks DO NOT solve this issue since you are still not moving and poses other health issues. You can't stand in one place all day. People need to sit as well.

This really makes me wish it was the norm for employers to provide standing desks. It seems like the evidence is mounting that traditional desks are killing us. But since a decent adjustable standing desk costs ~ $700-$1500 US, they're seen as a luxury.

Just out of curiosity, what linux apps are you using that can't be installed using one of the many mac package managers such as Macports, Fink, Homebrew, etc?
I was developing Linux-only software. It wouldn't have been practical to develop it from within OS X.

I agree, but it's worse with the MacBooks. IIRC, the keyboard I had looked something like this. There's no clear indication what key combination I'd use to even simualte home, end, etc.
In contrast, all of the non-Apple laptops I've used either had those keys present (in 17" laptops), or had the keys silk-screened to indicate what key combo I'd use to simulate a home key, end key, etc.

A recent employer issued me a new 15" MacBook Pro. I really liked the weight, battery life, screen quality, and the feel of the keyboard. But the non-PC keyboard layout drove me nuts. I.e., the absence of stand-alone keys like home, end, page-up, alt, etc.
If I was using only native Mac apps, I would have been okay enough. But I was accessing Linux GUI apps within a VM, and linux console apps via SSH. It was a real challenge to get decent Mac-to-PC key bindings. I also had real finger-memory issues as I'd switch between driving Mac and Linux programs from the same keyboard.
If I could get a laptop that's just like a MacBook Pro, except it had a PC keyboard layout and a 17" screen, I'd be all over it for my Linux work. But barring that, I'll choose a non-Apple laptop.
Did any of the other areas have a congress that was actively importing cheaper labor?
No, but the POTUS is actively trying to give every semi-skilled American worker competition from anyone who chooses to illegally immigrate. Does that count?
I'd like to hear him explain his regret in a little more detail. Was it morally wrong? Was it against civil ethics? Was it anti-democratic? Was it illegal? Or was it that they got caught?
Also, "is regrettable" is basically the passive tense. Does he regret it? Does he thing that the congressional oversight committees are morally culpable for not having stopped it?
When federal law eclipses state law, your right to democratic self-determination is reduced. About the only exceptions I can think of a when blacks and women were granted voting rights, but that's not what's happening here.

My previous employer did this, presumably because of high rent in a metro area. The resulting cube layout was insane.
