Aye, I'll grant that Netscape was quite foolish in its handling of the affairs that led to its seeming demise. Netscape the company only exists now as a tentacle of the AOL/Time Warner beast.
SO WHAT?!
As long as they manage to produce something that I (and I suspect most other people) would consider to be a quality product, and not fubar it like last time. I will be more than happy with Netscape 6.0 as my primary browser. The internals of Netscape the one time corp. really do not interest me and alot of others. Only the quality of the product.
So lets stop slamming them for the past and focus on whats coming in the future.
The companies never find cures for anything anymore. Know why, theres more money in treating the diseases.
I swear, ten years from now we'll be calling our co-worker at home asking them "Where were you today?" and they'll be like "My AIDS is acting up again." I'm sure Robitussin will have a treatment for that in the formula sometime in the future also.
As far as electronic toilets go...not many people know this, but when Kruschev visited (forget what year it was) the CIA had his sewage pumped down to thier lab for analysis. Know what they discovered? Kruschev needed more fiber in his diet.
Yes we have drivers licences, work and school IDs, et... The catch is that we choose to accept these IDs. Nobody forces us to accept/not accept a job that requires IDs. Nobody forces us to drive a car. We arent even forced to attend a public school. The catch with a national ID is that it gives the government the authority to step in and say "Unless you have this card you cant work, eat, drive, educate yourself, under any circumstances, even if the party your working with doesnt care if you have an ID or not." The government becomes a third party in almost every situation that should only be a two party affair. And the government dictates how interactions between those two parties can be carried out, even when it's "help" is unwanted or completely unwarranted.
If I want to work somewhere, and they require an ID, then the agreement is between me and my boss. If I want to drive, then I will choose to get a drivers license. However if the government requires all interactions to be cleared through them by the use of some all encompassing tracking system, that is cleary an unwelcome intrusion into my liberty to conduct business as conscience guides me.
Oh...and for those who think "That would never happen in America"...well, what can I say to that? Some people have to find out the hard way.
It seems to me that BeOS would be a little too big use as a clustering type OS. With the GUI and all. A more efficient solution, in my mind, would be to enable BeOS workstations (which are great mutimedia machines) to distribute loads on a Linux Beowulf cluster.
Granted, I'm likely overlooking some things here. But just off the top of my head, it seems that it would be easier to utilize what's already there rather than starting another big project to add Beowulf clustering capabilities to BeOS.
I've been trying to think of a way to distribute processes from a BeOS workstation onto a cluster of Linux machines. The cluster has 24 motherboards, each with dual P2s and 64mb of ram. (Setting it up for the math and science departments, naturally). Creating the cluster itself is not a problem, however I think BeOS would make a great frontend.
Simple. Create the jobs and send them to the Linux cluster using BeOS, and display the results back using whatever catches your fancy. (Linux, BeOS, Macs, yadda yadda).
BeOS and Linux can make a great symbiotic relationship if used appropriately.
