The Xbox doesn't have to bother with running windows, plus whatever else in the background. Also, since every xbox has the same hardware, programmers can optomize the code specifically for that hardware, while on a PC, you've nearly an infinite amount of configurations.

Vice City is based on GTA3. The problem may be, though, that when they remade the engine for Vice City, they completely scrapped the multiplayer code, which may or may not make such a mod for Vice City extremely difficult, if not impossible. Myself, I would enjoy a Multiplayer Vice City more. I don't think it will happen, though, at least until this mod matures.

I'm willing to bet that a good 85-90% of PDAs don't have a PCMCIA slot. Sure, the Ipaq does, but the PCMCIA thing makes it massive (not that it's too much an issue, you're going to be carying around a CD rom too), and I've not seen a battery powered PCMCIA CD-Rom. Not to say there isn't one, i've just not seen it.

How terribly useless. Why don't they make a CD-Rom thing for PDAs? I would love to have hours of music, or video, or what not, right there, without have to buy a laptop. Portable CD Players have been battery powered forever, so it wouldn't even need to draw power from the PDA. I'd think such a device would be more popular than a CD rom for a GBA.

Not minding the bad data, hard drives are a lot more than 40gb in capacity. And a lot cheaper at that. Aside from the fact that the article is flawed, there has been a bigger decrease in the price of magnetic storage than with the price of processing power. Though I agree in that Moore's Law should not be used to calculate anything other than Processing power. It is not a benchmark comparison for all computer prices.

This is just from one vendor though, so these may no be the best prices. Also, the opteron is designed for server applications. A Better comparison might be a Xeon, which at 2.66 is $308. So judging by performance, about the same cost. The Opteron can only come down in price :)

  16. Re:Why not just get a laptop on Tom's Hardware Reviews VIA Mini-ITX Board · · Score: 1

For your purpose, the price increase is obviously merited, but for most people, who would use 1 unit, and not haul it around too much (unless it's a Carputer, but that stays in the trunk), it's worth not paying the extra $700 or so on a full out laptop. Mini ITX has its niche, Laptops have their niche. In general, though, if you need a laptop, Mini-ITX will not do, but where you can sacrifice SOME space to save A LOT of money, Mini-ITX will almost always be better. In the context of the topic I replied to, this is more than likely the case. Also, those computers you're talking about are called Desknotes where i've seen them. ECS makes them. They are more or less laptops that take desktop parts, and need to be tethered to some sort of power source, either the wall, or an external batttery. About $700 less than a Dell of about the same size, and specs. The Dell has an internal battery, or course. That's a different argument entirely though.

  17. Re:Why not just get a laptop on Tom's Hardware Reviews VIA Mini-ITX Board · · Score: 5, Interesting

Arguable on ALL points. The Mini-ITX Spec dictates that the mobo can't use more than like 25 watts. In many cases, a 50-70 watt PSU is MORE than enough. Laptops may use less, but you don't buy laptops because they use very little power (in most cases) you buy them because they're portable. This is NOT meant to be as portable as a laptop. Plus, a Mini-ITX system can be run COMPLETELY Fanless. Try doing that with most laptops of the same speed. Laptops aren't THAT much smaller for the price increase, and you can only get a laptop capable of doing video/audio for $150 if you enjoy compressing video to 50x50 at 10k/s (not really, but you get the point.) For $300, you can have a computer that will play all your music, and movies WITHOUT recompressing them, and have more space to store them, to boot.

They make Mini-CD-R/CD-RWs that are smaller than a floppy, and hold ~185MB, as for the ruggedness thing, I'm sure you could get a case or something for one who's overall size would be comparable to a floppy. With most people's computers having CD Roms, and CD RW drives, this is a very viable option, Depending on your intended use.
