  1. I would rather have AlphaServer for less than $3k on Ultra Cheap Ultras From Sun · · Score: 1

This article caught me by a surprise; I was not expecting slashdot to advertise inferior hardware, when Compaq pays money for ads to have their DS10 advertised on Slashdot. I don't work for Compaq but here is a link:
    http://www.digital.com/alphaserver/ad/linux

    Compaq AlphaServer DS10
466 MHz EV6 Alpha processor with 2 MB cache
    High bandwidth access - 1.3 GB/s
Elsa Gloria Synergy 8 MB graphics (supported by XFree)
3U Small footprint - rack or desktop
Dual embedded 10/100 Ethernet ports (tulips)
Base system does not include operating system - Linux software installed as low-cost option

    128 MB system
with 10 GB IDE drive $2999

then you run to kingston.com and get 512 megs of ram for $1400.
then of to the buy.com where you buy 27.3 gig western HD for $250.
So for $3000 + $1400 + $250 = $4650 you got 466 MHz 21264, 37 gigs of hard drive space, and 640 Megs of ram. It runs Linux (better than sparc hardware ? ), NT (if you are nuts to use it) and Tru64 (Oracle maybe, if good linux version is not out).

  2. e-bay is rollin' with pics of people in bikinis on ebay vs Search Engines · · Score: 0

don't blame e-bay. with their servers they can't even take the hits they get now.
    For example:
last week I was checking adult educational materials on e-bay and saw bill gates in a bikini. I was hit hard, and trying to hit stop on my netscape i hit reload couple of times. ( I know stop and reload are far, but my eyes were hurtin'). Two days ago I got e-mail from e-bay saying that my reload pressing caused their servers to crash and that I own them zillion $.
Anyone knows of a good GPL lawyer software, cause I don't got zillon to spare.

    self-rating (-1, offtopic).

    btw,
I think e-bay makes more money from sales then from ads.

If we have to go with this guy, could a guy/girl with the highest score kick his ass for free. live on slashdot?

Also, Rob, we need a system where people could rate the articles (kinda like they rate the replies), cause I think this one sucks.

  7. Compaq, Alpha and NT on Ixnay WinNT on Alpha · · Score: 1

Digital started Alpha NT because they wanted a non-Unix product (part of Win NT pie really). Compaq has many, many NT products (servers and workstations, and since they can sell you a Proliant, why bother trying to sell you an Alpha. I have both DS20 and DS10s at work (20 is tru64 oracle server, ds10 is a linux box). If you are looking for high floating performance, DS10 running linux kicks ass. Starting at ~$3000 they use 466 MHz 21264 and get ~47 spec FPs. P3s and Xeon are down 20 and k7 is maybe little above. Alphas sound really expensive to make but. I would really hate it if Compaq would get rid of Alpha all together and started using only x86, xMerced CPUs. Btw, doesn't Intel own fabs in which Alphas are made? (They bought them from DEC as part of settlement)

I have a similar box, it it old k75 o/c to k90 (mobo doesn't support 50 bus) on via pa-2011 (ami bios). I control it over network (ssh), but i guess you can go serial way if you wish. For it to boot without monitor, you have to change display option from VGA to NONE in Bios. be sure to remove the video card, it will not work with card in there. Regarding the keyboard, remove the option "HALT on keyboard error" from bios. That should get you to boot up, from there on it should be simple.
