What makes them think they can compete? How about a totally different approach? Rhapsody works on a subscription model... You pay $10 a month, you never own a thing and it's all you can eat. I know someone who has it and loves it. It's not for everybody but there is money to be made for sure.

  3. This isn't new speculation on Another Google Tool To Take On PayPal? · · Score: 1

Rumors of a Google replacement for paypal have been around for a long time now.

...and for the record Paypal thinks the learning curve associated w/ dealing with all the fraud issues will give it a huge compettive advantage over Google and they may have a good point. I think we can all agree that Google hasnt exactly handled all the click fraud complaints in an ideal manner which doesnt bode well for all the problems that will inevitably spring up w/ online payment.

Right.... The vast majority of people who have put the cd in and whose computers are sending messages back to suncomm w/o their knowledge won't be installing the patch anyway.

Who is the audience for this patch? People who already know that spy-ware and cripple-ware have been installed on their pc's. Given that Suncomm and Sony have already done a lot of "Bad Things" without your approval would you then VOLUNTARILY install MORE of their software on your PC?

It just doesnt make sense. Would you hire the burglar that broke into your home to install your security system?

  5. Quick Question... on EFF and Sony Disclose New DRM Security Hole · · Score: 5, Interesting

Who in their right mind would voluntarily install something from SunComm or SonyBMG given their track record?

Their software phones home and cripples your computer. Would anyone here actually trust them?

  6. Will anti-spyware (Ad-Aware? Spybot?) catch this? on New Technique for Tracking Web Site Visitors · · Score: 2, Interesting

Just wondering if any of the existing anti-spyware packages out there are wise to this and disable the flash setting as per the macromedia instructions... one would hope they would (or at least will in the near future).

  7. WFMU Podcasts on Internet Broadcasting Makes A Comeback · · Score: 4, Informative
More and more broadcast radio stations are doing this but unfortunately few have provided music because of copyright fears. WFMU(91.1 FM) is a notable exception...

    http://podcast.wfmu.org/

They offer two shows of old 78s which are public domain as well as two other amazing shows (Advanced D & D with Donna Summer.... breakcore / random bedroom electronics and Downtown Soulville which is pure funk 45s from the 60s / early 70s and is extremely addictive. Especially of interest if you like stuff like Peanut Butter Wolf's Funky 16 corners comp from a few years back).

  8. Why no Streambox Question? on Rob Glaser Responds, Talks Up Real Networks · · Score: 1

I can't believe you guys didnt ask him about streambox? Here Rob goes bitching that apple isnt allowing him to use their propietary format and how unfair it is. Three years ago he puts a company out of business for DOING THE EXACT SAME THING and evoking the DMCA in the process.

I would really have liked to see him justify the insurmountable hypocrisy.

You mean similar to the whole "Walkman" thing? Did you ever notice that only Sony is allowed to call their walkman's a walkman?

Only in the US. Sony foolishly sued someone in Austria for trying to use the term instead of just letting it go. As a result the court ruled that Walkman had entered the everyday vernacular:

  12. prices, prices, prices on The Effect of Pirated CDs · · Score: 1

Vinyl LPs were around $8 when cds came along. The record industry decided "why not charge $15.99 for cds?" even though cds quickly became much cheaper to produce than LPs.

Somehow they also were able to convince artists that even though they were now making twice as much cash, that the artists still deserved to make the same amount of money for each unit sold.

If they werent so greedy and sold cds for $6 a pop people would buy them over a cheap knock off even if its still a buck or two more expensive.

Bottom line: being ridiculously greedy is a privelege not a right. They're just upset they cant rip off the consumer like they used to be able to... boo hoo!

  13. Doesnt Shoutcast do the same thing? on Apple Updates, Cripples iTunes · · Score: 1

I dont get it... so now you cant stream your mp3 playlist to your pals. Let's see Shoutcast (which is is incidentally owned by AOL/TW, the biggest record company out there) allows you to do this.

Windows media server is free as is a 10 user version of Real's Helix Server.... How is any of that different?

I can understand filesharing being a problem, but streaming? I can download an album in 5 minutes but if I want to get it via stream isnt it going to take me an hour w/ some tool like total recorder open?

I really must be missing something here cuz this just sounds silly...
