Actually, the way this generally works now is that you stop paying, but your character remains in storage indefinitely.
In EverQuest, they only guarantee characters for 3 months or so, but I've known of people who have stopped playing for a year or more then started paying for their account again and their characters are still there, fully equipped.
I don't know if Blizzard will do occasional character purges, but I haven't heard anything to suggest that so far. So you can cancel your account for your month-long vacation, and not have to worry about losing your characters.
But,they haven't officially said anything at this point.
They need to watch their advertisers.. I just got a pop-up with this text:
HELLO,
Does your computer seem to be running slower than usual? Well, if you've downloaded any music, movie clips, or games in the past 2 months, then your computer may be infected with "AdWare" and "SpyWare"!
Advertisers use downloadable music as a vehicle to "legally" add "SpyWare" and "AdWare" to consumer PCs. If you're suspicious that Internet Advertisers have added "AdWare" or "SpyWare" to your computer, then here's your chance to scan your computer at no charge.
Scan here. It wont cost you a cent!
"AdWare" and "SpyWare" infections can cause your computer to freeze up, or even crash your hard drive. Your computer was very expensive, so SCAN YOUR SYSTEM TODAY. It wont cost you a dime.
And I've now had 2 Trojan install warnings from Spybot after NOT clicking on their links.
I just checked their site, because I've been thinking of moving to GoDaddy from the (expensive) Register.com, and they've added DNS control as well as some other stuff that I don't care about.
And they didn't raise their prices.
I also thought it was strange when they mentioned the word "w00t" being derived from "hoot". Huh??? Who yells hoot? Anyway, I always thought it came from "root", as in, getting root access.
I'd heard "woot" was an abbreviation for "wonderful loot". It still sounds funny.
And I've noticed it creeping into my rl vocabulary.:P

Just FYI.
