Hehe - I maxed out my 24MB bandwith just last night :-) And that was with the TV off and without using the phone, of course. Gotta love telecom deregulation in France - one thing they really did get right!

  2. Re:why is this news on Robot-Run Warehouse Speeds Deliveries · · Score: 1

I should have been more precise really. - The warehouse I'm responsible for has one full-time guy in it - presumably, I'd still need someone to sign for deliveries, so I could at best replace him with a part-timer. In fact, I'm guessing that I'd need a highly-trained technician on site to operate the beast, so I'd probably end up paying more in salary, not less. - The warehouse is in France, and the temps are on minimum wage. So your estimate of $90k is about three times too high (that's averages for you!) - $2 million was the purchase. What are the running costs? I doubt they'd be cheap. Maintenance alone...(even if they chucked the first couple of years in free, that's not the sort of set-up that you write off after 5, or even 10). Obviously, I did run the numbers - it's just that it took me about 30 secs to do so.

But I'm afraid that the trucking of those particular robots will be done in flying cars.
And how many robots can I call at 5pm to start at 8am the next day without paying extra money?

Omeone tried to sell me this system for my warehouse just last week. I laughed politely. $2 000 000 + to replace one guy + another 5 or 6 temps, two months per year? I don't think so...

  7. A bit of confusion there on BBC Launches APIs · · Score: 1
    Let's clear up some things.
The Beeb can be divided into three parts.

    1) The BBC home service, paid for by the license fee. This aims to give independant quality broadcasting to the public in the UK - and only there. See also http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/running/ and http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/licencefee/ It is based in Broadcasting House.

    2) The BBC World Service is a free, separate organisation that broadcasts to the rest of the world (theoretically not - as far as I remember - to the UK). It has its own news organisation and was previously based in Bush House, although it has recently moved. It is funded only by government grant, not licensing fees.

    3) The commercial branch of the BBC is self-supporting. They make shows and sell them, and have various other activities.

(I'm afraid I can't point out links to everything in this comment, most of it coming from family members who worked in the BBC)

That was not what I was trying to say :-) However, it does seem to me that trying to install what is still experimental technology as a commercial proposition is probably not such a hot idea for countries that are hard put to stump up the cash - but then, people probably said that about trains, too, and planes !

    Do I detect a pattern here ?
