In addition to the desktop support for all of that, fixing any printer or other piece of hardware that breaks, troubleshooting everything I'm also customer service for the sells department. When the 2 people who normally answer the phone's go to lunch, i cover them while I read /. and omm. I also go to conventions to talk about the products, setup and communicate daily with 8 external warehouses. Oh, I also do the website and adverts, and whatever else the boss asks me to do, which includes occasionally hitting the production line in the plant.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm a busy guy, and if I found the patches, the iis lockdown tool, and hfnetchk months ago anybody can. Seriously, I'm an idiot too. I do some really dumb shit, but in July, when I found one of our mail server was hit by sadmind I used vnc to fix it while on vacation. When I got back I downloaded a shitload of pacthes and went over our security policies (we're iso9001, so paperwork is familiar). The only reason it got hit was because someone else installed index server to run a document manager without telling me (hey, i don't look at every service everyday, i said i was busy). After that, we had hybris because someone ran the attachment, it was a user's fault. They ran the attachment even after they had been told not to (they're users, it's what they do). It took me two days to be satisfied that it was gone. BUT NO CODE RED AND NO NIMDA! I applied every patch I needed for every service that I needed and turned everything else off.

Now, as Bill Cosby put it "I told you that story so I could tell you this one." We only have a half-duplex ISDN line, and it's getting pummeled by those damn things, the logs are huge. If you haven't patched your sever by now you should be drug into the street and beaten while small children watch and laugh at you. Some people just aren't cut out to be admin's. You obviously have something very wrong with you to find this a humorous statement and to flash it so blatently in my face.

With my father gone, I turned to the only authority figure I had left. The bear, JoJo. However, this didn't last long either as JoJo was killed by a ravenous group of my fathers logger buddies as my father lie still bleeding on the ground. Although I had only known JoJo for mere minutes I had already reached a deep bond with him as he tried to knaw my foot off and eat it. I felt that I had found a true friend and mentor, only to have him bludgened to death by cruel loggers.

In only minutes I had lost two fathers, so you see, even though you feel horrified because seanbaby finds humor in electrocuting animals, you have offended me in the exact same way (while you were trying to show your compassion even!).

I leave you with this, I believe seanbaby was only making fun of the people's reaction to the bear, not really the bear. well, ok, maybe he was making fun of the bear, but I only know what the loggers who keep me trapped inside an outhouse in Beaverton Or tell me, so I'm not likely a very good judge.

On a similar note, it is implied by quantum physics, that quantum particles appear to be aware of eachother, and that this action at a distance has no time delay, such as the limit of the speed of light. I wonder if SETI is listining to the wrong thing. Imagine this technology coupled with the action at a distance principle, so that you could choose coupled quantum particles to communicate over vast distances with no time delay. Couple these technologies with virtual reality, and it could be possible for communities, seperated by vast distances of space, to communicate and interact in real time. Wouldn't it be surprising to find a universal (literally) quantum network that was in use, and that we have been looking in the wrong place all this time. I would imagine that any species entry in to the universal forum would be predicated by their discovery of the technologies, and their ability to apply them to interact with this universal network. Instead of physically traveling in a space ship to distant worlds, we instead project our consciousness over vast distances with the help of virtual reality and quantum communication. Perhaps ET isn't going to show up in a galactic cruiser, but instead is patiently waiting for us to pick up the damn quantum telephone. We just haven't heard it ring yet.

  13. Re:Doesn't even understand own product on Sun Moves Toward "Open Sourcing Java" · · Score: 1

ok, i'm don't use java, so I'm not sure if this really applies, but here are my thoughts:

any programming language that runs on a proprietary operating system is going to have problems, not the least of which is the fact that the language is at the mercy of the operating system manufacturer. sun wants java to run on any platform, but must make some concessions to achieve this goal. it seems to me that it would be in the best interest of Sun to have the operating system open. it makes little difference to them if their software or their specification is open source.

i think everyone here agrees that it's the operating system that needs to be open, so that more programmers are able to write *good* code on top of that operating system. as many people have already noted, a few years from now (hopefully) the operating system will make little differnce to the user.

looking at the real world now, i think linux will reach it's saturation point soon because as much as i like it, it's a tool for people who like to know everything that's going on and like to configure every little detail (pretty much known as 'geeks'). Most people are happy with the /leading national brand/ operating system because it does most things for them, quickly and easily. this makes sense to me, when i buy a car, i don't want to install the engine myself, i just want it to go really fast when i push the gas peddle, wtf difference does it make to me if company a or company b made the engine? however, if company a made my engine, but i wanted to buy a stereo form company c, but that stereo didn't work with company a's engine i would be very upset (yes, that is ridiculous, but that's the way the software company works now isn't it?)

soooo.... companies like sun and aol/timewarner/glowfax mega corp that have software that they want as many people as possible to use would greatly benefit if the operating system made no differnce. i don't know about sun, but i'm pretty sure aol gets it, yes they have proprietary software, but they give it away. look at nullsoft, i'm sure aol is thrilled everytime j frankel and gang do something "subversive" and give it away to 50 million people, because it just gives them more and more users.

so basically this off topic (i don't think i've ever been on a topic) rant comes down to a question: what more can companies like sun and aol do to force operating systems open?

the enemy of your enemy is your friend, and i think our 'friends' need to band together to do something about /leading national brand/ operating system manufacturer forcing them to bow down to them in order to get a peice of software to actually work correctly.

ok, that got kinda long and disconnected, but i'm at work, and i'm doing 20 things at once. and nobody asked you to read this or agree with it. mod it down and it will go away.
