  1. Re:Well, no kidding... on Simpson's Cast On Bravo This Sunday · · Score: 1

Wow, that must take a lot of research. You check the credentials of every actor and crew member on the shows you watch? How about the network itself? The corporation? The stockholders?

And the main motivation you list is because her cult thinks that 75 million years ago there was a galatic overlord? How does that count as one of their "dirty deeds"?

Let me get this straight: you don't think that Scientologists should be allowed to seek employment? Your point of view fits in perfectly with the wild accusations that Scientologists level against their detractors.

The Japanese alphabet is not symbolic: it's an alphabetic in the sense that the two kana systems stand for sounds that make up words that already existed in a spoken language. You were perhaps referring to kanji. Referring to kanji as symbolic is also very misleading and often leads to the idea that there is something intrinsicly different about Chinese and Japanese that creates a vastly different reading experience. If you want to *try* to look at things through Japanese eyes, the first thing that you have to realize about kanji is that each one isn't a special little symbol that gives significantly greater impact to the language.

I appreciate your comments. But the "mature" approach isn't at issue here, I don't think. The justifications for comprehensive screening of credit reports for company-wide jobs is very weak. If a company gets recommendations on someone's past work, that's what their hire should be based on, not that person's ability to pay their bills on time. This is just like the widespread use of drug testing. My g/f works at a greeting card company as an artist/editor: why was her credit checked AND her pee? It is innane and a poor indicator of work performance.

  4. Re:I just thought of something... on Web Site Sues Annoying Pest Troll · · Score: 3, Insightful

I sent this story to Slashdot because I thought it was interesting and relevant; this was my first story submission although I've been reading parts of the site for a couple of months. Since the story was in a regional paper, the business section to boot, I didn't think too many nerds would have spotted it. Right now, though, after looking at what has been posted on the board, I regret sending it in. This is a community of people engaged in an activity who use a board to learn more about their profession and to communicate with other souls. Personally, mass extermination of pests is not something I advocate. But I think that legal questions aside, the flooding of the board with obscenities is, putting it mildly, unkind. If their suit violates first amendment rights, it will fail in the courts. Bombing the board with crap achieves no positive goal.
