  1. If it's such an old mechanism... on Hic Hic Hooray: Hiccups Explained · · Score: 1

... then why doesn't my dog hiccup? Or my cat? Why am I the only one in the house who retains this behavior from our common mudskipper ancestor?

Pardon the pun, but this sounds fishy.

  2. The Software on Columbia Coverage · · Score: 5, Informative

There's a good story about the software team at NASA here.

From the story: "Consider these stats : the last three versions of the program -- each 420,000 lines long-had just one error each. The last 11 versions of this software had a total of 17 errors."

  3. Skip the computer--iPod to Stereo on HomePod Brings Music from iTunes to the Living Room · · Score: 3, Interesting

Griffin Technologies has this add on for your iPod. It broadcasts your music in FM, allowing you to tune it in on your stereo. It looks great AND it's only $35. (OK, it's not available just yet, but they're taking pre-orders.)

Bonus: you don't have to run into the computer room to change the song!

  4. Unsafe at any speed. on Review Of GM's HyWire Hydrogen Concept Car · · Score: 1

This is a horrible design. It is terribly disadvantaged in any kind of collision with anything other than another of its kind (or possibly a mini.) Yeah, you have a great view of the road, but that's because there's nothing much between you and it.

I suspect, once the initial giddiness of their engineers subsides, that you'll see a return to more traditional configurations. They're going to have to put a rollcage of some kind in (center posts.) They're going to have to have something to hide the airbags in (dashboard.) And they're going to have to substitute something for the impact-dampening block of steel that used to be up front (buckets of sand?)

  5. If you can't link to them... on You Can't Link Here · · Score: 1

If a company such as American Express doesn't want me to link to them, what if I provided a link on my site such as americanexpress.com? You don't actually own the representation of the human-readable address, do you?

(Just for grins, compare sections three and eight of the American Express rules & regs.)
