You're not too bright are you? THIS DOES MEAN OTHER OSES. The main reason Linux has issues with Windows is that it has to "guess" alot of the blanks Microsoft deliberately keep to themselves.
It's nothing to do with the money. Microsoft are crapping themselves because of the other conditions.
Within 120 days Microsoft is required "to disclose complete and accurate interface documentation which would allow non-Microsoft work group servers to achieve full interoperability with Windows PCs and servers. This will enable rival vendors to develop products that can compete on a level playing field in the work group server operating system market. The disclosed information will have to be updated each time Microsoft brings to the market new versions of its relevant products." This is at least in theory a pretty absolute requirement; Microsoft has to publish whatever it takes in order for rival vendors' servers "to achieve full interoperability with Windows PCs and servers, and it must provide updates where necessary.
Microsoft currently licence this and it is this which they use to sell server OSes and apps using the ease of interoperability as a main reason. Server OSes and stuff such as MS Exchange earn them alot more than desktop OEM versions of XP. Ease of interoperability is what is getting companies to sign up to the ripoff Licencing 6 scheme. The requirement to open up the server interoperability means that Linux will go storming in big style.
Err there's Windows software on Sourceforge as well as *nix you know.
I love the fact that the aMSN team have released a Win32 version which seems to be more secure than Microsofts and doesn't have the adware crap either.
No one is saying that you shouldn't make a living writing software. What people are saying is that "worth" can be measured in other ways... the recognition of one's peers, the satisfaction of providing a useful tool to yourself and others, or the feeling that you are "giving back" to the community that has given free software to you, or even the sense that you are making the world a better place by providing other humans with useful tools.
And of course you can take that to Tesco to pay for the weekly grocery shop.
"That'll be 86.50 Sir"
"It's OK, I've just written a freeware/OSS office suite this week which far surpassess MS Office which you can download and use for free."
What weapons of mass destruction would those be? THEY HAVEN'T FOUND ANY. Every day it is looking more and more like the Germans, French and Russians were right.
Been there, done that doing it again this week. An item I bought last week for 320 that had only 7 bids despite being on for 10 days is already at 32 bids and 255 (started at 1) despite only being up for 6 hours simply because I did a better description and stuck it in a Classic Ford section instead of the normal Ford section.
I feel the pain of many on here as I too am the local "computer guy". Its amazing how many friends and family members you suddenly gain once they find out you know a bit about PCs. It got to the point of stupidity where I'd end up with three or four calls/visits a day. Doesn't sound much but when you do a 12hr shift at work it takes up a massive amount of your downtime.
It has now got to the point that when someone comes to my door I don't even answer. I open the window next to it and tell them to sod off as I know exactly why they've come. I no longer answer the phone either. The wife will answer it, say who it is and I tell her to tell them if it is anything to do with computers I don't want to know.
Slowly they're getting the message but unfortunately I'm now know as someone with an agressive attitude and no manners. It's a real pity they don't realise how much its been stressing me out.
Isn't it interesting though how these people suddenly disappear when large sums of money per hr is mentioned?
Microsoft = IBM circa 1980. IBM had basically the PC market sewn up despite its horrific patent gaffe. If you were a IT purchaser in the 80's and you wanted PCs you bought IBM. You never went wrong with IBM and should you even dare to go with a clone maker then IBM would immediately despatch a team of sales stormtroopers to make sure you stayed "true blue". Does this not sound a little too familiar?
Here we are 20 years on and I can't actually remember the last time I saw an IBM branded PC in a shop. I've seen the odd model of laptop but the days of walking into a PC retailers and seeing swathes of IBM PCs are long gone. Microsoft is starting to go exactly the same way.
You're only a customer if you're using their own client. You're not a customer if you're using a 3rd party client but merely a leecher of their resources.
Why the hell can't CUPS or Foo just install the fucking printer? Why the hell do I have to go through a dozen steps just to add the damned thing? Why have a "Search Local/Network" if it DOESN'T WORK?
This is pretty much the same as alot of stuff for Linux IME. Eevrything is a battle. Install an app/game. It comes with a menu entry but because whatever distro has fucked with the directory placements, it doesn't get installed so you go hunting for the executable then launch a dozen apps just to add the menu entry.
I'm in the middle of deliberately downloading MP3's of every song I can think of through Kazaa.
Two problems for the RIAA with this:
1) I'm in the UK - so fuck em.
2) In the UK I'm entitled to have a copy of any music I've paid for in a format of my choosing.
Like to see them do something about that. The worst they could do is get a judgement against me in the US but seeing as I don't ever intend setting foot in the Communist Replublic of the USA I can't see that being too much of an issue.
USA - Land of the free? If that's freedom you can keep it.
Actually he's not on his own. Many modded UK cars have Playstation 2's and XBoxes fitted. All he's done is add a XBox Linux mod to his. Nothing spectacular.
You merkins are so easily impressed..
"The Fast and The Furious" was laughed at in the UK because the Euro/Jap modded cars in it were so out of date. Talk about living in the 90's...
Still, you'll catch up one day.
Because some of us are British and not as dumb as you obviously are. THe car is British. It is a over 400 series. I own one. See the logo on the carmat and the steering wheel? It's a Viking Ship, the logo of the BRITISH Rover Group.
It's not an American car you dumb fucking rednecked relative of GW Bush. The car in question is a Rover 400 series. THe red button under the temp control is for the Aircon. How do I know this? BECAUSE I OWN ONE. The manufacturer badge on the car mat and steering wheel is a viking ship..the badge of the ROVER CAR GROUP.
THe car is British, the guy is British. Yanks are crap at I.C.E..get over it.
Fucking Yanks. Why do you assume everything comes from the US? It's been quite interesting to note that quite a few recent things like this have had nothing to do with the US at all
It is a Rover 200 or 400 series car. It isn't Japanese but a model which was produced from a Honda-Rover collaboration. THe owner is British, te car is in the UK. Geddit?
Yes there was a patch out BUT it couldn't be installed on a great deal of systems without some serious hacking, something which Microsoft ADMITTED TO. It actually broke some installations. Not the kind of thing you want to be responsible for as a BOFH on a SQL Server serving 10,000's of users.
"Only because the US has so far been sucessful in catching terrorists (like these ones [cnn.com]) from crossing into the US."
Appears that the only reason that one was caught is because the Canadian Intelligence and Security Services had done all the leg work since 1994. If you want to see how terrorists are caught, look to the UK.
The EU has a far better track record of protecting its citizens than the US. Many of the practices of the MPAA and RIAA would not be allowed to happen because it is impossible to have the Euro MP's in the pockets of groups such as the aforementioned due to the transparency of funding as prevuiously mentioned by another poster. Also you have over a dozen different countries and therefore cultures deciding on any proposal.
"Patents and copyright laws could have been what actually built a software industry in the United States. European countries just aren't known for their software prowess. "
You're kidding aren't you? Two of the top 3 Linux Distros are European. Most of the best games come from European Software Houses.
Did you actually read the order?

Took me all of 2 minutes to find....
I guess it is true what they say about Windows making you stupid.

"It's still 86.50 sir."
Not a retard or anunprincipled windbag but a realist. Do you think Bill Gates would be worth $32billion if he'd given MSDOS and Windows for free?
Get real.
What weapons of mass destruction would those be? THEY HAVEN'T FOUND ANY. Every day it is looking more and more like the Germans, French and Russians were right.

Yeah right, whatever. Go back to smoking crack.

Because it is a British car you moron.
Only the really crap drivers use Auto boxes in the UK. A car with an automatic gearbox is virtually unsellable.
