  1. Re:I thought he US had done internet voting too on Swiss Town Holds First Internet Vote · · Score: 1

Interestingly, it's alleged that many of the overseas votes came in late during the whole Florida mess & were subsequently included even though postmarked after the deadline, many of which came in for Bush. Maybe internet voting could avoid problems like this, but would *have* to be oversaw by an independant party. For the minor benefits, there is a risk that it could undermine the confidence of voters.

  2. Re:Beware the Standards! on Recycling Pay Phones into Terminals · · Score: 1

A few weeks ago I needed to make a quick call before hopping on my (more than likeley delayed) train. I tried three of BT's jazzy touch screen web browser type phones without any luck. One had crashed, one wouldn't dial out, and with the third the touch screen calibration was off by about 2 inches to the left. In the end I gave up trying to dial the number on this one and jumped on the train. It's nice to see BT acting as an innovator rather than stifling inovation as usual, but these phone booths were/are badly designed and executed. Having said this, I can't beleive that any comunication developments (e.g the growth of mobile phones) hasn't increased the number of potential revenue streams to telco's, rather than killing them off - e.g. web, sms, wap, email, yadda yadda.

  4. What's in a name? on Microsoft Drops .NET Name For Next Windows Server · · Score: 2, Interesting

The thing is, none of the last round of server products were .NET in anything other than name anyway. They were developed in the DNA world - pre-2000 (e.g last versions of Commerce, Biztalk and SQL Server's 2000) which was before MS even began this .NET rebranding excercise. Repackaging them all as .NET only served to confuse people at the time so reverting these guys could be a good thing.... But it sounds like they are dropping the names in the next generation of servers... which are more likeley to have a .NET flavour - Go figure!

I'm confused. I thought that without the subscriptions, the unit was nothing more than a doorstop?

Hey, it's better than just auto-bundelling the price into the cost of the unit, aye?

Here in the UK we have a choice of paying for the lifetime subscription. I'm tempted by this- but the rumours that the firm might go bankrupt have held me back so far.... :(
