You make TWO valid points..or rather descriptions.
And I can personally identify both. Rational economics: Me I do my homework, research etc before committing to a purchase. This includes actual 'need' of said item and how it compares to other offerings, cost/benefits et al.
Irrational economics: My g'friend. Oh! Thats cute! SOLD!
So..while your post are valid, there exists 'both'. Both the rational..and the not-so-rational.
Forget about the 'language'. The hippy 'green', 'progressive' shit isnt gonna work. (Well..progressive shit never works anyway).
But as far as power consumption goes...do it in BUSINESS TERMS. Begin with..."This will save us money". Its as simple as that.
When I consolidated a bunch of remotely accessed PC's into a VM environment, I didnt present 'hippy crap'. I submitted a spreadsheet that laid out the power consumption numbers, cost of equipment, licensing etc. It was pretty comprehensive. Even included 'pretty graphs' for the higher ups.
They listened. I built it.
Lesson: If all your gonna do is 'be enlightened' and sing of unicorns, rainbows and greenie-weenie garbage, you should just quit your job and live in a commune.
In the real world, you'll achieve much more with a complete idea/plan rather than leg humping algore.
You know, with a couple minutes of reading you too might be able to figure out that "trying to criminalize citizen journalism" is not the same thing as preventing the courts from getting random citizens to disclose their sources when they've spewed it as fact all over the internet.

I'll put forth that the proposed law I cited VERY MUCH LIMITS JOURNALISM IN THE US.

Democrats trying to criminalize citizen journalism By: Mark Hemingway Commentary Staff Writer 12/03/09 5:10 PM EST
An amendment to a bill currently being considered by the Senate would deny ordinary citizens doing vital investigations in the public interest the same legal protections as professional journalists. If it were to become law, the change could significantly stifle important citizen journalism efforts similar to the recent ACORN expose.
The Senate is currently considering a new press shield law sponsored by Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa. The bill would "maintain the free flow of information to the public by providing conditions for the federally compelled disclosure of information by certain persons connected with the news media." Except that Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Cal., and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., want to ensure that any new journalistic protections would only apply to professional journalists and not regular citizens. An amendment filed by Durbin and Feinstein would modify the legislation to define journalists thusly:
AMENDMENTS intended to be proposed by Mrs. FEINSTEIN (for herself and Mr. DURBIN)
Viz:
In section 10(2)(A), strike clause (iii) and insert the following:
(iii) obtains the information sought while working as a salaried employee of, or independent contractor for, an entity--
(I) that disseminates information by print, broadcast, cable, satellite, mechanical, photographic, electronic, 1or other means; and
(II) that--
(aa) publishes a newspaper, book, magazine, or other periodical;
(bb) operates a radio or television broadcast station, network, cable system, or satellite carrier, or a channel or programming service for any such station, network, system, or carrier;
(cc) operates a programming service; or
(dd) operates a news agency or wire service;
In section 10(2)(B), strike ''and'' at the end.
In section 10(2)(C), strike the period at the end and insert ''; and''.
In section 10(2), add at the end the following:
(D) does not include an individual who gathers or disseminates the protected information sought to be compelled anonymously or under a pseudonym.
While the ACORN story has stung congressional Democrats and pointed out the deficiencies of the mainstream media, there's no basis for Durbin and Feinstein's amendment that seems anything other than vindictive or an attempt to protect the powerful. It's telling that bloggers on both the left and the right are in total agreement this is very bad law.
Reality is a bitch huh? And we can't have THAT when sadly attempting to bash conservatives now can we? MOD ME DOWN!!!!
===== That is why they want to get rid of all government regulation of industry, and all laws regarding commerce. That will lead to a new feudalism. The sad thing is, 99% of people who support libertarianism will end up being serfs if their plans ever succeeds. =====
Actually I wouldnt mind being a serf. Afterall, they only paid what?? 10? 20 percent of their income to the 'king'? After federal, state, local taxes, regulation fees, and every other 'contribution' take nearly 50% of my income!
"It means diverting production lines and that is a lot of money and so we have to prove the business case," he said. However, he made it clear that he is enthusiastic about the idea and wants to make it work. "We just have to show it is worthwhile," he said.'" Really?
It regards to bare machines, yoinking a box 'off the line', and dropping an unformatted HD in it 'costs money' as opposed to developing your windoze configs, loading all the adware and other junk and copying it all to a hard drive?
Neat trick!
For Christ's sake, would you stop it already with that fucking urban legend about some alleged "global cooling" scare? Really?
Can you say Time magazine? http://www.junkscience.com/mar06/Time_AnotherIceAg e_June241974.pdf
Oh.. Ok. I concede. It was in Time Magazine afterall. So it MUST be an 'urban Legend'..
(Refuted fact alert! Prepare to get modded down!!)
So..first it was Cooling..now warming..
I say we gather these 'concerned scientists' from both camps.
Get the past advocates of Global cooling and the current ones of global warming,
stick em in a room and let them declare "Global Neutrality".
Look, it's simple: all of the authorities and powers-that-be could have been in total agreement for the last 2 decades, warning people about global warming in every available media outlet and it wouldn't have mattered because Joe Sixpack doesn't give a shit. Really?
'Cept 20 years ago the 'experts' were warning about global COOLING.
But hey! Whats a lil 'minor' error between 'concerned scientists' right?
Global Warming!! Yeah! Now THATS where the MONEY is at!
Hurry up! The bandwagon is leaving for its next stop!
I am not talking about 'Bill Nye, The Science Guy', but about Einstein. Probably Einstein knew nothing about medicine but he was the prototype for 'smart guys' and 'scientists'. Nice try..
Einstein was a scientist FIRST, a 'celebrity' second.
Quite the opposite.
His mental prowess brought about his celebrity...
Contrast this with how some actor's celebrity is believed to bring about intelligence.
Hardly a valid rebuttal..
But thanks for playing...
Why Oh why would anybody even 'consider' the opinion of a celeb. Granted, they have the 'right' to say anything they want. (Trouble is, what they say is asinine, moronic, and uniformed.) 'Celebs' are the mental equivalent of 8 year olds. Typically uneducated, live the life of 'me..me..me', and spend more time in front the mirror rather than a book.
Remember, just because they 'seem intelligent' on 'screen' doesnt me they are the same in the 'real world'. These people 'pretend' in front of camera, they 'pretend' to be other than themselves, they speak words others have written, and walk from one end of stage to another on the cue of others. Basically they are well madeup puppets that can be animated without visible strings or a hand up their butt. (Oh Wait..In hollywierd I suspect the latter form of 'directing' occurs more often than we may think.) These are hardly the qualifications for somebody capable coherent and independent thought. (Just look at how many 'believe' Micheal Moore! That would be your first clue).
Dont confuse a 'celebs' intelligence with their 'feel good' causes. It doesnt take much of a brain (or any) to joint PETA or some other wacko group and thus claiming some 'higher ground' above us mere mortals.
Puleeeze. Celebs? And their 'opinions'? Hardly a matter of discussion, but rather a 'joke' on those that take them seriously.
Hey.. I still like cartoons. I would put any 'celebs' opinion up against Bugs Bunny's worldly thoughts anyday. It would make for an interesting debate. (I'll put my money on Bugs for the win)
Sigh... I knew a moonbat would start making things up... (He scores a 2 while I get a zero.. Thats about right...)
So.. here we go..
Ha, some feed!
Statistically absurd. Compare it to a big company, not the population at large because that also includes the braindead etc. Even more, somebody that willingly signs up must be suicidal, depressed, hopeless or just plain dumb. Why don't you come and die for your country next? ===== No..not absurd. Fact. Federal stats. But.. no matter, you call it absurd then throw in a 'but' to compare it corporate populations. Why not compare to Nobel prize winners? That would make your case too. But..such facts can never get in the way of a liberal. Suicidial? How about patriotic? Willing to defend their country? Ahhh. No such thing huh? You just expect to kick back, live in your tree, bang your drums and expect no outside threats. Riiiight.
Sure enough, that comes with the job. And that's why I think your are suicidal, depressed or just plain dumb when you sign up. And as for friends in canada, well, did you notice that my nationality is not american? ========= And so, your illogical, liberal rants make you 'smart'? Smart to disavow a military that defends your country? I suppose if you were to be threatened you would just 'run away' like the liberal wuss that you are? Or..would you 'send in the dumb'? Because afterall, your a liberal and believes everyone should be equal(income redistribution, housing, jobs, to each according to he needs....Oh Communism!) But just not 'as equal' as YOU. As for you not being an american? The issue of support for the military transcends borders. If you love your country, you will defend it. Evidently, you just prefer to live off what others defend like a good lil liberal.
Yes, and it even is a war that the US started, so not remorse about some of them being blown up. It only makes it even more sad for the blown-up grunts and their family. ==== That we started? Ya.. I guess those planes hitting the WTC was a hoax huh? Too bad buddy. The US is the big kid on the block whether you like it or not. Mess with the US, and well.. you see the results. (I bet that statement really burns you up..heheheh) Listen, I dont like the fact that we (the US) has become the 'worlds policemen' having to keep in line the world's rinky dink tin pot dictators. But considering the capabilities of other nations, its by default. Sure..say 'you shouldnt have to' I would agree. I would LOVE to pull out of every country, stop all financial aid and let em all have at it. It would make for some fun LasVegas betting. I'd put my money on Israel wiping Iran, Syria etc. (Can you say 6 day war?)
Don't you think that it is quite unfair that some village idiot and his 'advisors' can start a war in their private interests, but it is somebody else taking the hits when it turns out not to be a good gamble? ===== Huh? Lemme guess. Your about to scream Hilburton right? That canard is so weak its not funny. But..its a 'liberal screed' which means you have to have 'faith' to believe such things despite real facts.
I agree with you(!) that an army is not very good at peacekeeping. That army should never have been there in the first place. ====== Yup. We should have kicked azz and split. But..you see, we are a people that try to fix things, promote democracy and a better way of life. Nobody can say we didnt TRY.
Can we conclude from your snide ACLU comments that you are very willing to hand over your civil liberties? Go welcome your new overlords and tell them that you can be very usefull in rouding up fellow humans to work in their underground caves. ==== Nope. I dont equate the ACLU with civil liberties. The ACLU is a socialist group founded by a communist.. Roger Baldwin. Lets quote him: ""I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property, the abolit
This is why I collect and keep a bunch of IBM Model M keyboards stashed at home. I can't stand 'new' keyboard, not to mention the silly and uber-useless 'microsoft key'. I have yet to 'break one'. I dont think any 'new' keyboard could stand up to my gorilla like pounding of the keys. Maintenance? I just pull the keycaps, clean em off after a few years, and I'm back in business.(Without having to access the 'the stash' of extras) I've always said.... If there was a nuclear war, all that will survive will be roaches and IBM keyboards.
Sheesh.. I know..dont feed the trolls. But... I hate Karma, and posting facts 'round here sends mine below sea level.
Parent has a very good point: recruitment is not about giving a fair impression of a soldiers life, but to select the dumb and hopeless from the smarter folks. ===== Absurd and only tells me your up to date on your propaganda. On average, recruits are more educated and well to do than the general population. Try looking it up. Your brain my explode and your Kerry bumper sticker may fall off, but hey! Thats reality.
Really who would like, to get paid to be shot at, and have a whole hierachy to piss on you as well? ===== Shot at? That comes with the job. And if your stupid enough to not expect it when joining, then join your friends in canada. As for the hieracy...ya. What a pain. Its not like there are such things in civilian life.. You know. Like at your job. But I wouldnt expect YOU to have one because you obviously havent experienced such things. I guess there is no pressure from a chain of command when your living in a tree and yelling at 'the man'.
If that game was about reality, they'd lock you up for a few hours to simulate the boredom, and then shove you into a hummer that gets blown up at the next corner. ===== Boredom. The service keeps you quite busy during when not on patrol. Your downtime? Is basically yours. Granted, you can't go down to the local rave scene to do ectasty and suck on baby toys, but you can read a good book. Blown up? War is war. And our boys do the best with what they have what what they are ordered to do. Personally? I think they being restained. Let em loose and let them do their job. At the moment, they are acting as 'peace keepers'. Not 'soldiers'. They were not trained as social workers or abitrators. They should send in ACLU for that. (grin)
The last scene in my version would be their mothers cashing their son's life insurance and having a party at their funeral: So long sucker! ===== Oh.. A page for Sheehans book eh?
But too many knuckleheads would be able to connect the dots and give the recruitment officers a good beating, so their rosy version makes some sense from their perverted point of view. ====== Good job of showing your ignorance. A reminder buddy. Its the SOLDIER that gives you the right to say such things. Not your teacher, or the New York Times. Its our boys in uniform that protect this country, its constitution and YOU. Your like a 'tough guy' standing behind a brick wall throwing snowballs while at the same time denigrating the guy that build that wall. Your ignorance is staggering.
(Prepare periscope and blow the tanks for Karma Plunge.. Dive! Dive! Dive!)
Gee...another 'vote' for 'government subsidies'...
I really wish such folks would realize that those 'subsidies' dont grow on trees.
It means higher taxes.
Econ 101 for such people would do them well.. Sheesh!
So Pelosi says: "Democrats support..... health care for all American within five years; and "dignified retirement" (no privatization of Social Security) through an "AmeriSave" plan."
But then states: "Pelosi attacked Republicans for writing a prescription drug bill that has seniors "paying higher prices on drugs at the pharmacy"..."
First.. Any 'universal' Hillary-care would include the drugs right? And cost a fortune right(G'ment costs)? (See Canada, UK). But then whines about Bush's perscription drug plan. (And even wrongly claims about higher prices at pharmacies under the plan).
Only in the world of liberal democrats can one get away with such a bi-polar schitzophrenic statements.
And they want to 'buy' votes with 'affordable' net access? Any thinking person knows that you can get access for 20 bux a month or less. If you can't afford access, how do you expect to afford a computer? The net is 'not' a 'necessity'. I suppose such 'plans' would be part of the yet unvield 'democratic platform' that has been a 'secret' for the last 8 months. (We americans are too dumb to know what the dems want huh?) Sorry..but the dems have 'no platform'.. Only rhetoric that continues to fail. I honestly wish they would put up some competition. But with so called leaders like Pelosi, Dean and Reid stearing the ship, such 'leadership' wont happen anytime soon.
"As long as the attacker's file begins with that prefix, it will go undetected by most antivirus programs out there," Hypponen said. He added that installing the Sony program on a machine running Windows Vista -- the beta version of Windows' next iteration -- "breaks the operating system spectacularly.
So.. Not only does it embed itself in current versions of windoze, but it seems to whack the upcoming Vista(Longhorn). Gee.. Ya think that would be a 'problem' for folks a few years from now when they play those CD's on their shiny new computers? This is what happens when you get this 'low level' regarding wedging drivers so close to the core.
And ya think MS would 'work with sony' to 'fix' this? Such a collaberation would be prima facia evidence that MS is just as evil regarding DRM. But then again, we already know this regardless. MS DRM and their 'trusted computing' is a joke. Yet, if they were to modify low level driver to 'accomodate' Sony's ROOTKIT, thats just going TOO FAR. Obviously performance and stability would still be taking a back seat to MS's so-called 'security initiatives' of last year. Again... Its an evil web Sony is weaving. I'll be very curious as to what MS will do about this regarding Vista. Will they go for stability and simply advise everyone not to load that Sony junk at risk of whacking the machine? Or will they 'accomodate' Sony by patching the native MS drivers to 'work with' a single, particular, specific and narrowly defined Rootkit? Let the games begin!!
Thats called a bill of attainder. And its unconstitutional. Just sayin...

Shot at? That comes with the job. And if your stupid enough to not expect it when joining, then join your friends in canada.
As for the hieracy...ya. What a pain. Its not like there are such things in civilian life.. You know. Like at your job. But I wouldnt expect YOU to have one because you obviously havent experienced such things. I guess there is no pressure from a chain of command when your living in a tree and yelling at 'the man'.
If that game was about reality, they'd lock you up for a few hours to simulate the boredom, and then shove you into a hummer that gets blown up at the next corner.
=====
Boredom.
=====
Oh.. A page for Sheehans book eh?
But too many knuckleheads would be able to connect the dots and give the recruitment officers a good beating, so their rosy version makes some sense from their perverted point of view.
======
Good job of showing your ignorance.
Sheesh!
So Pelosi says: ..... health care for all American within five years; and "dignified retirement" (no privatization of Social Security) through an "AmeriSave" plan."
"Democrats support
But then states:
"Pelosi attacked Republicans for writing a prescription drug bill that has seniors "paying higher prices on drugs at the pharmacy"..."
(We americans are too dumb to know what the dems want huh?)
Sorry..but the dems have 'no platform'..
