No, I'm familiar with xmodmap, X, and cygwin, and that's why I doubted it would work. I had powertoys installed at one time, and don't recall that option being present. It doesn't seem like this would be configurable, because alt and tab are on every keyboard, in almost the same exact places. I've worked with keyboard maps in Windows before as well, and don't recall being able to modify non-character keys (this may have been a shortcoming in the .kbd editor, as well).

No, you're going to bitch no matter what. If the size is different, you'd say it's too large and bulky in the pocket or some crap. The only reason you're against the edge method is because you're not used to it. If you used dollar coins everyday, you would quickly change the way you carry and handle change.

Note, some of my comments are directed at you, but are really meant for the status quo types that are against every kind of change to the currency.

No, it'd be about the same. No one uses kilolitres or anything like that, and there is no widely-used larger volume in the english system. As such, you would be ordering x gallons or ~x/4 litres.

Changing the size of the bills here would meet with such outrage as hasn't been seen since the Susan B. Anthony dollar. (Good thing we issued the Sacajawea dollar - everybody's using that, right?)

Actually, in some parts of the country, dollar coins are much more common. In the NYC area, the coins are used in all of the transit vending machines (this includes NJ Transit, PATH, NYCTA (Subway/Bus), Metro-North/LIRR). Retailers don't look at the coins funny, and theres even a slight chance you'll get one as change from a human (which, btw, is the largest problem of the coins IMO. While machines give them as change, if you ever spend them at retailers, they seem to just ship them right to the bank for a crummy piece of paper).

Correct and you bring up the main reason why I use duals, and why my dual setup is the way it is.

I use 2 15" monitors, at 800x600 each. While most of you are probably thinking, "I get more than 1600x600 on my single 19"!", I say bollocks. Running at 800x600 allows for a much nicer type size, and much less eyestrain. Sure, I may do a little more scrolling, but if you think about it, you are pretty much going to be scrolling no matter what. There is a very small set of pages/documents where it is multiple pages at a lower resolution, but only one page at a higher res. With the advent of the mousewheel, scrolling a few more times per page is barely noticed. The only drawback I find from this setup (which I've been using for almost 3 years) are high-resolution pictures. If a picture is 800x600 or larger, I cannot view it at 100% resolution on one monitor, and splitting it across the 2 is silly.

Huh? I happen to have multiple monitors, but I don't keep task manager open all the time on one of them. If an application locks and takes all the CPU, I have no problems closing it as the WinNT/2k/XP kernel is preemptive. You're not still running a 9x product, are you? No one is saying progress cannot be made without patents (on slashdot that is, I'm sure there are corporations willing to take such outrageous stances). However, progress is no longer held back by lingustic and geographic bounds. Furthermore, significant investment, of both time and money, is required for just about any technological advancement. While I don't disagree with your public funding/university proposal, the avenue must exist for private interests to research and market products. Without patents, there is no such avenue. Medicine is a special field because a medicine patent allows a company to extort individuals who might require the new product to continue living. However, this does not discount that for many fields (not including software), patents are workable and should continue to be used.

There is simply a different acoustic feel to a room in a house than a movie theatre that cannot be easily emulated. In a theatre, I can 'feel' the front sound coming from 40ft away, and the rear coming from 20 ft. At home, I can 'feel' that it's only 8 and 4, respectively.

When you first click it says "No referrers from slashdot" or something, but you can just go up to the location bar and hit enter, the referrer isn't sent, and you get the bug report.

Most of the time in a theater, you can see scratches and dust and such on the film, which you don't see on a DVD. (Some theaters are better, and this typically gets worse the longer the movie has been out. I've never been to a digital theater, but they wouldn't have this problem)

I tend to go to only a few films a year, and generally right when they come out, so I hardly notice any film noise at the theatre. I would also argue that this, in most cases, is not a problem and rarely detracts from the experience(either that or the theatres I go to (always Loews) are good about it).

As for sound, I don't have the money to get a good system. Even if I did, the room is so small that just one speaker of a normal setup would overpower the room. I also live in a duplex and even normal listening levels can be heard by the other tenants. Also, I do not feel that home theatre audio is anywhere near the quality of actual theatres. True, the encoding (dts, dolby digital) is the same, but the effect is not. Rarely are home theatres balanced properly, and even if that is the case, rarely are the room's acoustics proper. The effect that the loudspeakers have in the large theatre is completely different than the effect smaller speakers have in a home setup.
