I think that a reply to IDG directly with the "letter" in the message along with a message saying something to the effect of "well if you can't discuss your books, maybe we don't need to BUY your books!" And then go to say you will organize a boycott of their books etc.. Because they were being D***s about the use of the "for dummies" in a disccussion thread.
The best place to hit companies is in their pocket book!
Being a member of the U.S. AF Reserves I found out about this first hand. The U.S. Military has made it against regulations for ANY member of the armed services (active duty, reserves or gaurd) to get Laser eye surgery or even the Lasek surgeries. You can be discharged for having it. There were two people in my reserve unit that had it done and are now EX-Reservists. So if you want out of the U.S. Military quick, go get laser eye surgery and tell them you had it done! Ah the freedom you get from the military!
Actually I think it was just a bad port to OS/400. Having done Domino installs on OS/400 and getting it working with the Client I have not been impressed. I work on AS/400's for a living and love the machine, but I'm sorry domino just doesn't cut it on an AS/400 IMHO. I like Domino and Notes (better than M$ Exchange & Outlook!) And I am not to fond of Novell's groupwise either. So basically the only choice left for colabrative software IS Notes and since you really have to have Domino their a pair.
I had seen an article (don't have URL) awile back that showed Lotus was getting better performance on Linux servers than on NT or AS/400's. (I have worked with Notes/Domino on the AS/400's). I have a "reserve" on testing the Linux server when we get it at work through our "Lotus" box we get every quarter. I want to install it and run it through tests myself. I have the R4.5 & R5 client on my laptop and have the R5 server on our AS/400 at the office. But I am planning on installing the Linux client on a Linux box to play with. (maybe we can get some clients to go to Linux for their Domino servers this way). Save them lots of money on OS licences!
"This VC may be very good; I agree with most of what he said. However, I personally known a couple established hi-tech CEOs (president and founder) who've been burnt by VCs. VCs like all other professions come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Not all are ethical, or even particularly good at what they do. "
This is quite true. I remember seeing a documentary on PBS (don't laugh) they had a segment in it on Cisco. The people that started Cisco got burned big time by the VC's that they went to. not long after Cisco got big the two people that started Cisco were fired by the management that the VC put in place. So the people that started the company no longer even worked for it. Seems crude to me! There is one thing in business I have come to live by "TRUST NO ONE!". You have to look out for number 1, but watch out for number 2.:^)
While I am sure there are some very ethical VC's out there, I would still watch your back every step of the way.
The complete 'C' source code for the Amiga's Intuition code was released to the public domain back in the late 1980's. It was released on the Copperstate PD disk series. I think it was either disk #14 or Disk #24. I have it on one of my DAT tapes. I still own two amiga 2000's. But you just can't get replacement hardware anymore. I hope they release the Source so the emulator writers can improve the amiga emulators. They just aren't good enough yet. I have tons of cool amiga software that I would love to run under an emulator under Linux.
Open the Source!
Maybe Microsoft can learn how a real operating system is written! (no offense to Linux).
YADA, YADA, YADA. So what will you use Gnome? That's even more crap. IMHO Gnome is the Windows of the Linux world right now. And just what we need another Linux distro. Jesus, Now everyone will be putting one out. I guess you want to help in the fragmentation of Linux huh? If you want a new LInux distro make one for your own use. I don't think anyone cares about another Lnux distro. There is enough good ones out there. Why don't you spend your time and effort helping one of the others out. I really don't think many people care whether a distro is 100% pure GPL OSS.
Bjorn (Dr. Awsome) sells CD's by some of the former "MOD" musicians in/from the "scene". Check out his web page and see if any of the ones you liked are listed. Most likely though you would have to know their real names, not all list their pseudonims. He has AListar Brimbal, Chris Heulesbeck and some others famous from the C64/Amiga scene. Bjorn is also re-making and re-releasing his old MODS as MP3's!
I listen to the Music of Bjorn Lynne. Especially his album Isms (he did under the name of Divornium). Any one from the old Amiga scene may remember him by the name Dr. Awsome. He is at: http://www.us.lynnemusic.com.
Other music I tend to liten to is Techno, or "Dance" music. Mainly high energy music. I am able to think better with this kind of music. I tend to come up with more creative code to this music type of music.
Here is something to think about. M$ Has a 6-8% investment in SCO. WIth SCO investing in LinuxMal M$ is Indirectly investing in Linux. But here is the catch. People from SCO will be on the board of directors at LinuxMall, thus M$ will have an "in" into a Linux company. Interesting?, Scary? Guess we will see.....
I would think that all the PC ram manufacturers (Like NEC) that decided to switch production from RAMBUS and gear their production to SDRAM because of the RAMBUS problems. I think that if these manufacurers noticed the high price of SDRAM lately and begining low availability of SDRAM; they would just contiue with thier plans. I think they could make some gaurenteed money by going back into producing SDRAM. Going back into RAMBUS production is going to be a crap shoot. The big question is Does Into have the problems fixed or not? That's the $64,000 question. If they are just saying they do and they don't and OEM's all jump back on the bandwagon, they will get burned. And what do you think will happen when the OEM's get burned, and in turn the consumers. I think Intel should not move so fast on pushing OEM's because if they are just bs'ing everyone they will KILL themselves and AMD and Cyrix may just knock Intel off their high horse.
>Years of the media using hackers as a synonym for >"someone who cracks systems" has made it an >acceptable use. Stop fighting it and deal.
And this makes it right? By your words then we as Linux users should stop fighting M$ and bow down to the masters. Hogwash!
Dvorak may have been around the industry but he konws dick about it. His articles prove that! He is just another mindless fool.
You might try reading Steven Levy's book, you might othen get a feel for the REAL term "Hacker". I consider myself a hacker of the old school and have no problems admitting it, even in the business world. In fact my employer liked the idea of having a "hacker" around to solve the problems their normal IT staff couldn't handel.
I have one of the old connor Archive python 4mm dds 2gig DAT drives. Where do I find more into on how to use this audio capability? I didn't even know it could do audio! I have been using it for backing up my system for the last 7 years.
The catch is that M$'s pracdtices is: buys you out, force you out of business or steal your technology and call it their own. If you don't fit into one of these catagories their not worried about you. I think the best thing that could happen is if a Ted Kazinski out there would just level the M$ complex in redmond. That's the ONLY thing that could do anything about M$! The DOJ won't put a stop to them that's for sure, and what other company out there can compete with M$'s money, power, marketing and FUD machine? The only other thing would be to seceretly Reverse engineer EVERY prodict of M$'s and secretly release the R.E. code on the internet that would HURT M$'s to the core. But alas both options are highly illigal. But wouldn't the second option be on the same lines of M$'s tactics????
Having been both a permanent employee and a contractor/consultant (now a consultant again). I have found it all comes down to your work ethics. I feel that as a contractor I was brought into the client to do a job and I should do that job to the best of my abilities. The client is paying big bucks for my work and it is my obligation to give the client their money's worth. I feel that those that do the "it's good enough for government work" don't belong being consultants. When you go into a client site you want that client to ask you back in the future should they have a project. If you do "Microsoft" type work they won't want you back. And having been an employee having to maintain application code I know what a pain it is. EVERYTHING I code is coded so that an employee of the company can come behind me and do modifications if needed. I feel that the employees of that company will have a better opinion of me and my consulting company as well as consultants. I think that any consultants out there need to take a hard look at the work they do at client sites. If your not truly giving that client their money's worth your cheating them, and your a theif. It's like a car salesmen cheating you on vehicle. If you aren't giving the client his money's worth you need to change your work ethics.

Web site hackers, wanna fix this problem?
Anyone, Anyone, Bueller?

Originally I was going to say things like how brain dead you are (especially since your running windows and haning out at /.) But then I remember:
"never argue with a fool, people might not know the difference"
So I won't bother arguing with you.
