If memory server me right couple of years ago OSX was using a single kernel lock. Which means that no more than 1 thread running in kernel. See: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10-4.ars/ 4 I read a long article describing why OSX was much worse processing Ethernet traffic than windows. I don't know how it has changed since that time.

  3. Rebellion, Taxes, Social Security? on Lucas To Make New Live Action Star Wars Films · · Score: 1

Lets see when Lucas was young, rebellious director he made a trilogy about rebellion against establishment. Now that he is middle aged his trilogy is about war caused by Taxes, trying to grab more Wealth In the old age he will make something based on Social Security?

  4. Maybe you are just playing the wrong type of games on 'Losing For The Win' In Games · · Score: 1

I played lots of "strategic/tactical" games over the years. Best games allow you to lose many times and still win Newest one: Total War Series (Medieval TW, Rome TW, Mediaval 2 TW) I was looking forward to some hard opponents/battles. Currently in Mediaval 2 campaign my lands were invaded by Timurids, I lost 2 first battles - then won one, lost one, won one - keeps the game very exciting. I am wearing the enemy down through attrition. Oldest one: SWOTL (Secret weapons of Luftwaffe) allowed you to fail multiple missions and still bomb germany into surrender. Other: Panzer General, Allied general series. Hearts of Iron XCom RTS: Few RTSes allow for reversal of fortunes. Age of Empires 2 - multiple times were were on the loosing side and we still won. - I don't like that game Company of Heroes Total Annihilation

  5. If it is so cheat - I can upgrade it! on Games Analysts Weighs In On Console War · · Score: 1

Look I upgrade my PC about every 2 years.
Since nintendo is making money on every console sold, whats preventing them from releasing much more powerful version in a year or 2. It could be as powerful as PS3 or X-Box but quite inexpensive because all of the components become cheaper by then.
They could call it next generation :)
I would buy it - Wii costs as much as my graphic card on PC. (And I replace it every 18 months)

  6. 350 pictures were lost - due to a bug? on Titan Photos and Sounds · · Score: 2, Informative

I watched conference at 2am pacific time. I believe they mentioned that 350 pictures were lost because software did not have a command to receive from a channel B. Someone forgot to implement command to start receiving data. Investigation in progress. So we got 1/2 of the pictures were were supposed to get. Because of that we lost lots of panoramic pictures which are now missing lots of pieces. NASA channel coverage was a pure shame. They stop transmitting conference after 1 hour. Cameras instead of showing data graph were showing wide angle with scientist pointing to the graph and a graph 20 meters away. So you could not make out what parts of the graph he was talking about!

  7. I fixed similar problem too! on Saving Huygens · · Score: 1

I am not a rocket scientist but just a software engineer. Some years ago I worked for satellite phone company. My team was working on receiving signals from the satellites. Code had to determine signal frequency (shifted to Doppler) and delay (due to distance). Amazingly they forgot to account for satellite antenna rotation. Depending on the angle of antenna toward direction of satellite movement Doppler would significantly change. Enough that some calls at the antenna edges would be dropped. After I pointed out problem to them chaos ensued. We could not change any of the equipment and some of it was in orbit already. So I came up with software only fix. As a reward I got $1000 bonus and was moved from Engineering/Development to Quality assurance to make sure I will not cause any more problems. They did not even wanted to hear about smaller Doppler changes due to earth rotation.
