  1. Re:Is nerdcore going to become a legitimate subgen on The Dueling Nerdcore Documentaries · · Score: 1

Like MC Chris says in his song "OMC":

    Now nerds are trendy
    They call it "geek chic"
    Nerds never noticed
    They were on their PCs

  2. Re:Everybody has an opinion on Bunk Camp - Apple Gets It Wrong? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I agree: I really enjoy using Apple's products, and I think this is getting ridiculous. To be fair, Slashdot is far from the only news source — online or otherwise — that's flogging the bejeezus out of this. The Apple advocate in me thinks the attention is great as it's a sign that once again Apple is the company that's doing new and nifty things that get peoples' attention (or at least they're doing things that get attention, and the newness and niftiness can be debated), but on the other hand the whole Boot Camp foofaraw just keeps coming down to lots of people yelling at each other about what they think the product should be or do, or what they wish it was. *shrug* It's like anything else, some people are going to think it's dumb, some will think it's really useful. I'm one of the latter; I'm a developer and I don't want to have separate machines for running all the MS stuff if I can at all avoid it, and I've had some issues trying to run all the 2005/.NET 2.0 products (SQL Server, VS, and c., and c.) in a virtual PC, so this is something that will work well for me. For people who want to swap quickly in and out of, say, Outlook in Windows and Photoshop on Mac, well then yeah, BC is dumb.

Let it go people, it's just software. Use it or don't, then be quiet.

  3. Re:boblbee on Advice On Notebook Backpacks? · · Score: 1

I have the chrome Megalopolis, it rawks. A pretty girl started checking her reflection in it at the airport once, which of course led to conversation and c. But it's a great unit. I love mine. It's more comfortable than any backpack I've ever used, unique, tough, and airplane carry-on sized. Bonus!

  4. Novell is the only speed bump here on Using Macs In The Work Place · · Score: 1

Where I work we're mostly a Windows shop with some Novell: NT, Win2k, XP, and Netware 4.1. I use my Titanium (running Jaguar) for lots of stuff here, and use it in conjunction with my Windows workstation as well. I'm even able to use the company-approved email client, Lotus Notes R6, on my laptop thanks to the OS X client that ships with the install CDs. I haven't had any problems printing, file sharing, developing, doing anything really, unless it involves Novell. Getting around WINS isn't hard thanks to SMB, but if I don't know the IP address of a Novell box off the top of my head, then that's kind of a pain because while it's not all that difficult to go *find* the IP of whatever Novell machine I'm looking for, it's easier to just drill in via "Network Neighborhood" on the Win box, whereas on the Mac I'm sort of stuck. So but yeah, that's the only real speed bump I've encountered. Otherwise, no sweat, man. A couple of our engineers over in R & D use their PowerBooks and have no troubles, either.

  5. Another Vote for MRI on Have You Personally Used an Honest Head Hunter? · · Score: 1

I got my current (tech) job through James Clayton Consulting, who I guess is a franchise/subsidiary/sibling/whatever of MRI, and came to find out that like 60% of our IT department also got hired through them. Apparently our company has a long-term relationship with JCC and everyone seems really happy with the arrangement, so there's a vote for establishing LTRs with your HH, as well. On a personal and perhaps frivolous note, they (JCC) still send me christmas cards and birthday cards, and I get follow-up calls every year or so to make sure I'm enjoying the job. Judging from most of the other posts here it sounds like my experience was not exactly typical.
