Its fun and all to talk about DNA sequencing and ordering, but nobody really talks about how each gene's properties are discovered.
Why? Because it's a fairly gruesome process. The easiest way is to find "patients" who suffer from some genetic disorder. Then compare their DNA with DNA from a someone who does not suffer from the genetic disease. Find the difference and that's assumed to be the gene trait.
To understand genes of a lesser level, say some deformation that doesn't allow the fetus to come to term - such as if the bones of the body does not develop. our best ability to do so is to "knock out" the suspected gene with "junk DNA" and grow a fetus. If the fetus shows the deformity, then it is such gene.
Gene research leads to alot of "mutants" but that's where it becomes fascinating- to create "gene defects" and find out what gene maps to what physical trait.
NO, i'm no biologist, but I'm in pursuit of a BS in envi sci. And there is some talk about pollution and mutations.

And what is your opinion of klling rats/mice for research? Due to their close relation to humans, much genetic research is done to mice/rats in order to get a better understanding of the human genome.
What about insect research? The latest trend in neuro-toxins is for them to target insects specefically. The idea is that crops can be sprayed, insects eat crop and die. Humans eat crops and don't die.
Bacterium research? Although bacteria are now 99% understood, is it approiate to exploit bacteria? Because of their simple nature, they can easily be altered to manufacture proteins that are critical in biological research.
Lastly. Are you for euthanasia? I mean for humans and animals. For example, if YOUR FATHER/MOTHER was suffering from terminal lunch cancer and were on a severe pain management program. Their mental state would not be "fully there". Is it worth letting them suffer through the pain and not being mentally there to enjoy their last moments with you? Or is their physical and mental suffering acceptable if they can physically be present? I know that I would choose a "livable state of mind" over "physically present". I had previously decided it was time to call it quits when my dog could no longer walk on his own, and I would call the same decision for any other loved one.

I'm a 3rd year junior, I've since moved off campus but this is my suggestions.
1. The, IMHO,most logical suggestion. A dorm room isn't that big, buy a 50 foot cable. If you insist on keeping a wireless network around, try going for 11a equip. Kinda hard to find but a week or 2 ago, worst buy...er i mean bestbuy had a sale for a dual band 11a/b/g router.
2. See if there is a campus wireless, and if it covers the dorm areas. If yes, convince EVERYONE to kill their AP and use the campus wireless. As for the phones, not much you can do if you're not buying everyone a new phone.
3. You could try a game of "my transmitter is more powerful than yours" and use ext antennas to put out a stronger signal...but not that practical.
I disagree. Text books are sold as "international edition" for a fraction of what it costs at domestic college bookstroes. You don't see every 3rd college student importing books.

buying used is still a problem. The publisher in question is still getting his "cut" from the sale. Buying "used" from the CD store is like buying Used from your college bookstore. Everyone loses out because its pure profit for the store.
Here is an example. At a university I used to attend, the bookstore had a program "Saving students a million dollars". On the wall they had this lovely therometer and they would fill it up as they "saved students money". I call Bull. They are mearly tallying their "pure profits" from the sale of used books.
If they want to save the students a million dollars, educate professors to demand books in b/w or to find textbooks that don't hae cds- that they never bother using anyway.
Likewise, the RIAA isn't a one size fit all. I don't care for color pictures in most of my textbooks (or the hard binding). Likewise, with music I purchase, I don't care for the fancy artwork. I want something that works in the car and thats it. After all, all my CD cases are stacked under the bed, and the CDs are in a cd wallet.
If your going to buy used (book or CD), find someone who is willing to sell it to you- amazon marketplace, half.com, etc. The store selling used is just a gimic to get more money out of the first sale.
3 ways I can think of to "defeat" this bug, for the time being anyway.
1. Read the code for each and every webpage before opening a new tab...but that isn't practical is it?
2. For this trick to be effective, you have to mouse over the link, open the new tab, then the popup comes. The popup has to come in a reasonable amount of time, say 8 seconds (as the security page indicates). FIX: simply mouse over a link before you click, and wait a little...
3. don't open tabs. I clicked through and go the citibank page to load with no js popup...security concern gone!

Linksys is happy, and if everyone keeps their mouth shut the FCC never knows about it.
If, on the off chance, the FCC does find out about it...well our government could ALWAYS use more money, so slap the modders with a fine. I'm ok with it because Bluetooth I have not.
