Clearly you realise that scientists are studying as many glaciers as they can, including those which are growing because otherwise you wouldn't be able to easily find out the data about them would you.

Do you think that "pro global warming" scientists only study retreating glaciers and "anti global warming" scientists only study advancing ones ?

What shifted THAT suddenly to make them vanish. Sorry, it wasn't man. Since you've so brilliantly ruled this out you may like to join in with the scientists who are actually studying this and publish a paper laying out your evidence and supporting your conclusion. I expect mixing with scientists may help you realise the difference between scientific consensus and what is sensastionalised and printed in news papers.
  6. Re:Anonymous cowards on World's Largest Tropical Glacier Vanishing · · Score: 1

Actually in Peru I think quite a lot of people rely on the meltwater from glaciers for irrigation.

As I understand it the key achievement of the Inca people the fundamental building block of their empire was engineering their food production to maximise it's effectiveness in every possible food growing zone in their country.

Because Peru is strongly effected by the El Nino effect its usually extremely rich fish supplies can disappear entirely for years at a time and crops can be destroyed totally by either drought or torrential rains so the Incas took this into account and grew food in as many different eco-systems as the geography of their country allowed so that even if 3 of them were wiped out for the year the country could feed it's self on the other.

I think the high and medium altitude farming relies quite a lot on glacial meltwater for a reliable source of water. Certainly where ever you go in the countryside the terraces are all well fitted out with stone canals and aqueducts leading down from the high peaks.

I think the people most interested in home schooling are people who do not want their children exposed to un-godly ideas such as evolution, science, rational thought etc and I think this is a very bad situation to foster.

Children brought up in this manner are totally controlled by their parents ideas of what is right or wrong and are only going to hear what their parents want them to hear only going to mix with people sanctioned by their parents. In the case of religiously inspired home schooling this means that by the time the children have grown up and join normal universities and get jobs they hold completely entrenched viewpoints and are not capable of assessing arguments which challenge their beliefs and upbringing. Really this is child abuse and shouldn't be allowed under any circumstances whatever the motivation, worthy or otherwise.

Yes, almost. I think a slightly different analogy might be this.

Imagine you buy a new Au-Pair, you take her back to your house and install her in new room and you're impressed by how pretty she is and how she seems to always do almost what you wanted her to.

In day to day use to start with she's fine, a good all round performer and you've certainly no regrets, you even consider writing a letter to her manufacturer expressing the pleasure you get from using her new curvier interfaces.

But at night, it's a different story. Whilst you're tucked up in your bed asleep your new Au Pair is brazenly walking the streets in the less salubrious parts of town. She is openly advertising her assets and happy to let anyone mount her who comes along so it's not surprising that a lot of nefarious types take cruel advantage of her accomodating nature.

This double life takes it toll, tired by her nocturnal activities she is sluggish and listless when you work her during the day. She is prone to random outbursts and a short temper but you simply attribute this to her foreigness and assume they always degrade like this.

All is going well until one day you get a knock on the door from the FBI who arrest you for the activities of your Au Pair who is now heavily involved in sabotage and espionage activities during the night.

I admit you're analogy is probably longer than mine ( which I realise is directly related to it's brilliance ) but none the less I think I have indicated perfectly how you be quite within your rights to sue the supplier of your Au Pair for the damage she has caused rather than take the rap yourself.

I've just bought a new Microsoft Zune portable media playing device. I don't make snap purchases and like to decide carefully what products will offer the most benefits to me at a price point I can afford.

The new Microsoft Zune ticked all the right boxes during my reasearch, I am a stylish upwardly mobile kinda guy and it's stylish exterior styling suits my image perfectly whilst its carefully crafted hard drive and audio components are all constructed lovingly by the finest Microsoft craftsmen.

When I heard about the groundbreaking squirt feature I realised this unique new innovation set the Microsoft Zune head and shoulders above it's competitors ( such as the now old hat iPods ).

I like to feel I'm doing my bit to support my favourite artists so imagine my delight when using the Microsoft Music Store to find Microsoft are taking their obligations seriously and making sure groundbreaking artists ( in my case the amazing Phil Collins ) have the full support of Microsoft to continue producing new product.

With Phils latest and greatest securely housed in my new Microsoft Zune I was delighted and my friends were amazed when I "squirted" my particular favourite track to their Zunes ( everyone I meet is awestruck and wants one too just like mine ! ). I find 2 listens is plenty for someone to decide if they like a product and then it's simply a matter of a few clicks in Microsofts extremely easy to use and value for money Music Store to buy either the whole album or the track for themselves and lets Phil stop worrying about the evil pirates using their iPods to steal his music and allows him the freedom to plan his next magnificent opus free from worry.

Gosh I'm so excited by new Microsoft Zune ! This is probably the best day ever of my varied and exciting upwardly mobile and aspirational life ! Check in tomorrow when I take my Microsoft Zune off piste heliboarding to see how it shapes up on the slopes.
