It should also be defined as 2 million part time jobs.
The call centers in Greensboro NC where I went to school had staff almost entirely made up of students. No one was allowed to work over 40 hours a week (preventing the company from having to worry about benefits, overtime and any other responsible thing for its workers)they fired at a whim when someone was nearing the senority they needed to become a permenant (read full time) employee and had a huge turnover rate of people who didn't depend on the money they paid at all. Unless a friday pizza is depending on the paycheck. Telemarketers are a blight.
DC isn't exactly a good example to use, first off its not a crime to own a firearm in D.C., it is a crime to own or carry a handgun, but in no way does this prevent someone without a Felony Conviction from owning a rifle or shotgun. In addition people who owned a pistol registered before 1976 can still have that said pistol. Secondly its only 60miles square and bordered by two states where its easy to get guns(one with pretty lax gun laws).
Thirdly while the Murder rate in DC has been high the last couple of years going back further than 2000 to 1993 will show you that the general trend of murders in DC is going down.
1993-454 deaths 1994-399 deaths 1995-360 deaths 1996-397 deaths 1997-301 deaths 1998-260 deaths 1999-241 deaths 2000-242 deaths 2001-233 deaths 2002-262 deaths Much of that gun related violence can be linked to the hard financial times of the lower class (collapse of the internet bubble, economic downturn, loss of jobs) rather than any other single cause (Drugs, Organized Crime, Gangs are all symptoms of poverty)
Ohh geez the bag costs 200 bucks!!! Dear lord no, why pay more than a tenspot for a bag, any bag. I'll ask my fiance and her coach purse. Lets be honest this backpack is a status symbol!! If you like it you will buy it, if you dont, you wont. Thats how it should be.
When a product comes out on the market ask yourself two questions.
1. Do you need it?
2. Do you want it?
If answer to number 1 is yes by all means buy it.
If answer to 2 is yes, use your head, good judgement and checkbook balance. If the answer to either is no dont buy it!!!!
If you think it costs too much.... Dont buy it.
If you cant stand it because its the wrong color dont buy it. If you dont like it, dont buy it. I testify that that speaks volumes more information to the manufacturer than whining about the product will.

Heck Imagine the cost benefits of not producing CD's, tapes, minidiscs or other mediums and releasing music only as files.
