credit transactions / etc are *generally* encrypted using SSL... and if they are you shouldn't be using them! the google accelerator says that it doesn't touch SSL connections...
Here's my question: what happens if your hard drive dies? If the diagnostic tools are stored on a portion of your hard drive, and you need these tools to recover... isn't it the chicken or the egg syndrome?
Also, what happens if you decide to upgrade your hard drive? are you stuffed then? how do you reload the EFI tools?
If this could happen in Australia i would be a very happy chappy. At the moment Telstra own all the telecommunications infrastructure, Telstra control what happens on it. If telstra refuses to roll out DSL to a particular area (either due to cost, or the fact that alot of the population is on pair gain / RIM)... it doesn't happen. (They can also charge what they like, but that's a different story). They try to force people into buying their more expensive and less convenient one-way satellite services. ugh.
If utilities would take it upon themselves to provide where telstra doesn't, imagine the profits they could make, even at a modest markup, like another poster mentioned!
(On a side note, i'd love to become involved with a project such as this... but again, different story)

This is starting to sound remarkanbly similar to Microsoft's proposed WinFS ... hmmm
I also presume that by MySQL you are also speaking generally for all open-source databases, including PostGreSQL?
... they won't miss it if it goes away behind a for-pay login screen. i swear that said foreplay the first time i read it ...
who was responsible for modding this up as funny?

I thought Ask Jeeves used to have a feature like this, but looking at their site now, it makes me a liar. i swear they used to have one.
interesting ... are the prices comparable to those mentioned in the article (taking into account exchange rates of course)?
