  1. RedHat.com...still no updates on Running BIND 4 or 8? Upgrade! · · Score: 1
As I am waiting, redhat.com still has not posted updated RPM's for 6.2. It seems they were done Sat, but are still waiting QA. I guess they were watching the Super Bowl. You can get the 'unofficial' one from here http://www.linux-easy.com/rh-updates/

  2. Re:No one tackles the hard problems on Is It Time To Change RPM? · · Score: 1
the problem is stagnation. rpm hasn't been moving. I think we could all agree that rpm's have fallen behind. I don't think we should compare deb to rpm's at all. it doesn't really matter. what matters is that people don't get involved. looking at the changelog file, it looks like the only person doing anything is jbj@redhat.com, and it looks more and more like maintenance mode.

I think a lot of these features would be great. that is the great part about open source software. if people want some of these features. people can always write them and contribute.

  3. Aardman Animations Already Online on Aardman Animations Releasing New Animations Online · · Score: 3

Aardman Animations i already releasing films over the web. angrykid.com is not the first thing on the web, just the latest.

They were already sold on the web BEFORE angrykid.

  4. Maybe people DON't want to install WIN2K on VMware Signs Deal with Microsoft · · Score: 1
Just a random thought. People are fairly reluctant to go thru the hassle of installing, for example, Win2k. This way they can install, and try out without messing up their system.

Maybe MS thinks that people are finding out their OS sucks and won't install it.

  5. Phones you can't have on Cool Japanese Gadgets You Can't Have · · Score: 1
I work in asia developing web sites for those little phones. Mainly NTT-DoCoMo , and starting WAP, soon j-phone.

These phones use packet based networks so you only have to pay for data transmitted, not air time, so they are cheaper to cruise the web. NTT-DoCoMo has a micropayment system so people can make money ( US$1 - US$3 ) a month just by letting people read your websites. And a lot of websites are free.

It is REALLY popular. 5 million users so far for NTT-DoCoMo, and they all can send e-mail and cruise the web.

Also, talking on the phone in the subway is considered rude, so people cruise the web or send messages on the long commutes.

  6. American Sites Only on Blind Sue AOL for ADA Non-Compliance · · Score: 1

The ADA only applies to sites/companies in America. All of the companies/sites I work for are outside the US. I still think we should use ALT tags for the diabled. But will american laws ( and lawsuits which can get pretty silly), Start having an effect on where we build websites.

  7. Re:More delays on their recovery? on More Quakes For Taiwan · · Score: 2

The power here is pretty much all back now. They were rationing for a while, which was not fun. They actually put up a schedule as to what time they were going to cut 'yer power.

The new quakes did much of nothing. We have been getting after shocks that big since the quake.

What is bad is that we have a cold spell here right now, and people are still living in tents. :-(

Here is a paper by a guy in the UK about using a similar process to update a spatial database.

    Spatial Database Update
    A key to effective automation

    http://www.laser-scan.com/papers/sdbupdate.htm

    I will quote two sections.

"Update processes include both information refinement and enhancement as well as the incorporation of new information. Metadata,
reflecting the status and quality of information, is key to managing database update. The creation and preservation of data integrity is crucial."

    and a second quote...

"Since the version holds an explicit record of all changes made in the transaction, the merge method can readily summarise the changes for the purposes of management information and for transmission (in digital form) to other update processes. The merge methods can also update any relevant metadata records within the database, to record the status of any changes made, and create any history objects that may be required to enable recover of
    previous states of the data."

It seems to address a few points, as in using metadata to address a structure and control and update information.
