My good man, if everything you know about US health care is from SiCKO, then you still do not understand US health care.

What I took away from SiCKO was that the whole US health care system is broken, where private health insurance companies screw their customers over, because they're more interested in profits than saving lives (which makes sense if your a for-profit company). And US citizens rely on jobs which come with health care benefits. Some (should be retirees) people hanging onto jobs just to keep their health care benefits. Oh and countries with Universal health care such as France and UK are utopian societes where everyone is jolly and healthy.

Michael Moore tends to exaggerate a fair bit in his 'documentaries'. But still it's enlightening. Maybe you can tell me, or link me some articles, so I can get a better understanding of what's happening over there on the other side of the world.

  2. From an outside perspective on Massachusetts Makes Health Insurance Mandatory · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm from Australia here, and I've never understood how the US health care system worked until I saw Moore's documentary, SiCKO.

I would watch American movies and TV shows, and wouldn't understand when you guys talk about, getting a job with 'health benefits'. Here in Australia, the only thing I worry about getting a job is if it pays right.

If I go to the GP (family doctor in the US), or need to go to the hospital, paying the bills is the last thing on my mind. It's all taken care of. Medicines are also subsidised by the government. You collect virtually any prescription for $3.

Honestly, I was surprised you guys let it get that bad. Then again, I wasn't surprised the reason it went the way it did: through greed and politics.

  3. Re:The Real Reasons Howard Wants Broadband = Spam on 99% of Australians With Broadband By 2009? · · Score: 1

It's a joke, he's saying "broadband for all" but it's merely "broadband for major cities, sub standard broadband for rural areas". The opposition party has a much smarter plan of delivering fibre to 98% of the nation, rather than attempting to use ADSL2+ in a massively sparse population.

I disagree with this. As much as a I dislike Johnny, I'd say their broadband plan is much more feasible than Labour's plan. John's plan is to have 99% of Australian population with access to broadband. Part of that 99% is those who live in bush rural areas, they get wireless broadband. This is why there's criticisms for the 'two-tiered' system. People who live in the bush don't get the same quality/speed of wired broadband as those in urban areas.

However I agree to Johnny's plan. It's more fiscally responsible than Labour's broadband plan. Labour wants 'equity' (which is all fairy lovey dovey) in broadband infrastructure; they want everyone in that 99% to have the same broadband services. But they want to spend AUD$4 billion on it, $4 BILLION. Compared to John's AUD$2 billion plan. I personally don't think its worth spending twice as much money to get fast broadband to something like less than 3% who still lives in the bush. Those who live in the bush still get wireless broadband, which might not be as fast, and perhaps might not be as fair, but these are the tough decisions that they have to make. And saving AUD$2 billion, I think it's the right one.

Yes that's about right. About five years ago, I ran one of those anime fan-subtitling groups. And even taking out the translation bit, quality work easily takes maybe 6-8 hours of work for a 25 min tv episode.

You've got to do the timing, make a transcript, then the transcoding (applying the transcript to the timing), then some typesetting (might not take long if you're used to doing it), and then re-encoding the video with a filter to apply the subtitle (perhaps this part youcan skip, by just provide a separate file with the subtitles).

I'd love for there to be subtitles to videos. I always turn on subtitles when watching my dvds. My hearing isn't so great either. But I wouldn't expect, stuff like, Youtube videos to have subtitles on them. Although perhaps they should with more professionally done media streaming, like for news and stuff.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but is the article saying that we should be putting our DRM-free purchased iTunes songs up onto file sharing networks?

I'm under the impression the whole point of DRM-free content was to allow users to legally use their purchased content to play them or convert them to any device we want. For Apple to put our names and email addresses into the DRM-free content seems okay to me, since I'm not going to be pirating the music out.

Unfortunately for your point, these comics don't describe the letter system at all.

I disagree. Although we haven't seen the M or AO rated yet, I think the idea of the comic is to present each character for each rating. These characters (and the way they are portrayed) are supposed to present to the viewer the age group the particular rating is for, and perhaps even why.

There are explanations on the posters themselves (it was designed to be on magazines so people would turn turn the page around to read the text). E for example, has this to say:

Because the Andersons play games, there's a system in place to make sure they bring home the right ones. This is how that system works: First, Mom and Dad select games using the ratings on the box. Step two, everyone gets a controller. Step three, the kids win. This quality time is presented by the ESRB.

it's not a dependancy, it's the best of two worlds:

    a) you could still have a backup on your computer of your important documents

Currently, google's offerings of gmail does not give you the option of backup documents on your computer unless you take 'copy and paste' as a backup method.

Using a word processing program on your computer instead allows you to save, and if you really wish to have that 'online flexibility' a better option would be to store the file on ftp or via email.

    b) google is very rarely down, it's also a redundant network so your data is pretty safe

Still even then, although I trust google is a pretty reliable and robust network, google does not offer assurance of service and are not liable for any downtime. In other words, technically (and legally I suppose), they don't 'have to' maintain the network to be functioning at 99% uptime, except as part of a company policy.

plus you can access your documents from any place (any browser w/ internet connection is enough)

Yes that's true, but looking at the bigger picture if you wanted to maintain your own personal redundancy to downtime, you'd ftp or email it to yourself. Most likely, any internet terminal you come across should have Word (or OO).

"Why use Microsoft if you have a broadband connection and combine Firefox with powerful web services like Google's Gmail?"

What would happen if my connection to the internet went down. Or when online servers that host the service goes down. Google is good but everyone makes mistakes. For some people, a few hours of downtime for email could be disastrous.

And if you rely on some application to be available all the time when you need it, its best to have it on your own computer.

Also what about the flexibility that is available with keeping your data on your system? Even if its an Microsoft proprietary data format or whatever, there's always people out there willing to hack it down for open use.

But if its sitting on some server somewhere far away, where its exclusive access to you, is via a browser, the number of choices on what you could do with your data are alot fewer.
