  1. Re:Canada a space power? on ISS Mission STS-100-6A Canadarm2 · · Score: 1
So, as for Canada being a space power? Depends on your definition. [...] So, I would have to say yes, we are a space power of sorts - or at the very least, we *enable* the other space powers.

Yep. We did one hell of an enabling job for the USA... When Diefenbaker canned the Avro Arrow project back in the 1950's, the scientists and engineers moved south to create the US aerospace industry. See http://web.idirect.com/~ccaft/arrow.html for a good overview, or http://www.google.com/search?q=canada+avro+arrow for FMTYEWTK about the Arrow and the trashing of Canada's aerospace industry.

Among other things, Canada would have had better fighter jets, nearly a 10-year lead on commercial jet aviation, and a chance at the first reusable spacecraft.... but we stood back and handed it to the USA.

  2. Re:Some of these aren't so dumb! on Dumb Laws · · Score: 1
I believe that this law has been changed since then, and it is now even higher.

It varies based on the radio station's license. AM stations have a different CanCon requirement than FM stations, for example. But it's usually around 20%-30%.

In Canada we call it Canadian content, and it does not have strong support from the people, especially in the west, where we feel that it takes away our freedom to choose what want to listen to or watch on tv.

What choice? How would allowing stations to play 20% more music from the good ol' USA improve your freedom to choose?
It's a moot point, anyway, because most stations play far more Canadian content than is mandated.

  3. Re:CSA? on OLS Wrap-up · · Score: 1
CSIS and CSE still actively recruit at Carleton, and are very obvious -- they don't send spooks, they send HR people.

There were several CSIS/CSE/DoD techie types at OLS, but only one or two mentioned it on their name tags, and were studiously avoided by the paranoid attendees.

Yeah, I think I'll be rushing to purchase a Linux box from someone who doesn't use their own product.

    Nope.

True, Joe Bloggs is basically the British equivalent of John Doe, but it didn't come from any SAT prep course. It's been around a LOT longer than that. I find it more likely that the creator of the prep course had a British background.

  7. soundproofing? on Corel trades NetWinder division for stake in HCC · · Score: 1

The recommended solution is to put your Netwinder in the vertical position (using the stand). This will keep the machine MUCH cooler and the fan will not turn on as often.
Doing this has made the 10 Netwinders we have _much_ quieter.
