  1. Sounds Good but on Digital DNA Circuits · · Score: 0, Offtopic

This idea sounds good but I have to believe that it's not simply a mater of technology advances that will get us to this point. Such modifications to our cells/DNA are bound to cause problems. The body rejecting these cells etc. It's also another thing people can blame for cancer. It's an interesting idea and I hope it can work but I don't believe I will see it within my lifetime. Of course I could be wrong :)

  2. What Loss? on Aussies Face Jail Over MP3s · · Score: 1

"Copyright infringements cause considerable financial loss to the music industry and the AFP are pleased to cooperate with industry bodies to investigate cases such as this which can amount to a serious breach of the law," Mr Negus said.

This just never made since to me. If the music industry is losing so much money how can they afford to be spending so much in searching out all of these people. Am I supposed to feel sorry for these companies who, though losing massive amounts of money still have enough to finance very powerful lobbyist and investigative groups? I would also like to know how they can assume what their "losses" are because of these activities. I personally do not keep a large stash of MP3s of CDs I do not own. There have been times that I have downloaded an MP3 of a song or 2 and that encouraged me to buy the groups CD. How do they figure that into their losses. MP3s are NOT CD quality and if you want CD quality you will buy the CD. I believe that a good quantity of people who file share download things they normally wouldn't buy to listen to a few times and or they just do not have the money to spend on the CDs. If this is the case they music industry isn't losing much at all. I could be wrong about this however, I just can not see it being as big of a problem for the music industry as they say. I think greed and power is occupying the minds of those music companies. If this is the case the only way to get them to stop is to damage their corporate pocketbook.

I mean, murdering people would be a lot harder if I didn't have any arms, but I doubt anyone's going to pass a law requiring me to give them up.

I wouldn't count on it. There are several weasels that are trying to make us give up our arms.

To some degree reasonable restrictions need to be present to prevent crimes from taking place however this goes well beyond the realm of reasonable restrictions. At the moment our government is destroying our personal freedoms in order to protect a few whining companies profit margins. I would agree that the companies do have some legitimate complaints however this is not the way to solve those problems.

This wouldn't be so commonplace if the American consumer had a little more resolve. I see a lot of people complaining about the movie and music industry pushing for the rape of our personal freedoms however that same person will visit his local Sam Goodies at the end of the day to buy $50 worth of movies and music to help finance their raid of our consumer rights.

If you really have problems with these laws do more than talk about it!
  4. The Power Given to Government on "Super-DMCA" Outlaws Ph.D. Thesis · · Score: 3, Insightful

This law will be used like many others. According to the law caller ID blocking and NAT will be outlawed however you will probably not see the removal of the DSL router from the market. What you will see however, is the hypocritical application of a law that shouldn't be in existence. Law makers and companies will use this law to further their wants and desires while ignoring any possible blow back the law could have on them. I personally would get highly upset if I were to find a Michigan resident complaining on /. who has not sent a strong letter to their legislature. For some reason I can not see this type of law lasting long if people were contacting their representatives to tell them what they thought of their voting habits. Unfortunately I think that you have a great many people complaining on /. and leaving the government to do its own thing which leaves all power in the hands of the government where it doesn't belong. Most officials, when it comes to technology, are stupid so educate them! Most officials have a long line of companies and such asking that official to protect them (the company) and their products and a short list of individuals asking them to protect the individual and their rights as consumers and Americans. What is the point? The individual will be the one to get hosed here. Caller ID blocking will not go away. If you don't like the law try writing your representatives while posting on /.

  5. Re:Flat rate on Broad Bills to Protect 'Communications Services' · · Score: 1

ISPs do use flat rates and so do local phone companies. ISPs advertise and offer bandwidth. They sell bandwidth and I do not feel it is out of bounds to use what I am paying for. I would be will within my rights to max out my bandwidth 24/7. They company does not provide any additional service to my other computers. Nothing new is added. I am providing the second computer. I am providing the equipment needed to connect the second computer. There is no reason they should receive any additional money. If I pay for a service I am paying for my home to have that service. I do not believe that a company has a right to micro-manage what goes on in my home.

  6. Re:Ouch on Broad Bills to Protect 'Communications Services' · · Score: 5, Insightful

If an ISP can regulate the amount of computers I have hooked up to that ISP's pipe can the water company charge for the amount of faucets installed in my house? Can the electric company charge me for the amount of electrical sockets installed in my home? Can the phone company charge me per phone? The logic used in coming up with these policies is flawed to the core. I thank the companies for this and the gullible lawmakers we have in this country. Instead of making money by creating and proving viable services they will make their current services and products make them more money through bad legislation. Unfortunately it is the current trend. Just ask Disney's Mickey.

  8. Re:Legislative stupidity on E-commerce Sites to Collect Sales Taxes Nationwide · · Score: 1

States are running into problems because of the unemployment rate. They are receiving less taxes because less people have jobs. Bush cut taxes however that doesn't mean that states will get less money. He cut taxes to attempt to help get customers in the stores. He cut taxes based on numbers indicating that the rate of taxation over the past few years has exceeded Government spending. In other words the numbers said that the American people had been grossly overtaxed over the last few years and he has been trying to correct that issue. In other words over the past 8 or so years as the economy has boomed and the taxes have been rolling in our, then democratic, government decided that it needed to increase spending instead of giving us little people a break. Now because of the failing economy some programs may need to see cuts in order for us little people to see that break. I have yet however, read anything to indicate that any states will see a cut in the money received. If you have other information please post it to justify your statements because your logic doesn't seem flow well.

    1. Huge federal tax cut equals
    2. less money for FEDERAL programs.

I find it disturbing that people can actually try to justify raising taxes again and again knowing that many people in this nation are now paying 25% 35% or more of their income to taxes. That is insane!

Maybe now would be a good time for states to do a little house cleaning and get cut those programs that are wasting our tax dollars.

I do not feel sorry for states who are running in the red this year. I do feel sorry though for all the people who have the burden of supporting those states because instead of being responsible and cleaning house they will just raise taxes and place the burden on the people like they always do.

    Our Government needs electroshock therapy
