I don't think its a communist/capitalist comparison, more than a democratic/totalitarianism comparison. OSS is democratic, everybody has a say, everybody is involved in development. Closed source, I.e. Microsoft's empire, keeps a vast amount of freedome from the end user, leaving little to no say in how the product will be like in the future.
Now back to your capitalist/communist analogy: who says you can't make money off of GPL'ed or other OSS licensed software. Look at Redhat, IBM, Sun, Novell, Apple, TiVO, and other companies that use/make/help develop OSS software. In fact you can see OSS as having more to do with capitalism: A person develops a program, releases it under GPL. He sells it and makes a profile. Another programmer comes along, takes the source modifies it releases it, makes a profit off of that too. Even though the two projects are very similar, they still compete, which is one of the basis for capitalism.
Most people are forced to use Microsoft's OS. Say, if a new computer user goes to Dell (or HP/Compaq for that matter) the OEM will prefer to use Windows over Linux because of a nice deal between Microsoft and that OEM. The only way you can really get another OS from this, is if you explicitly state that you want Linux. As for putting other OS's (I.e. getting a blank hard disk to install some other OS) you are SOL. I don'
t want to turn this to a Linux/Microsoft debate, but Linux is generally better for the people in that there is a lot of freedom. You are given choices, sometimes an overabundance. But each choice offers something another doesn't because the developer(s) all have different goals/aspirations with their projects. Such is the way of OSS. Like mentioned in a earlier thread, OSS can be compared to media like painting, music, and writing. Why have one painting of a sunset when you can have a gallery of sunsets.
more specifically the framerates in the tenebrae quake mod. On my P4 2.4gHz w/ Geforce4 ti-4200, it chugs at 15 FPS @ 640x480 (maybe more when I compile it for linux)
you got Quicktime4Linux from the same people that brought you Broadcast 2000 and Cinellera. And yes, Mplayer handles it too (sorry about that, I had to bring up mplayer)
Actually you can use Photoshop plugins (not just the Filter Factory ones either). I successfully used photoshop plugins (3rd party, I haven't tried the stock filters, but then again, why would anybody want to?) Script-fu, Perl-fu, Python-Fu are all way better than Photoshop's "Actions" Plus its open source so if you don't like it, modify the fscking source. And yes, there is unsharp mask, and histogram adjustments, plus there are many Gimp counterparts to the Photoshop plugins (you have Gaussian blur in Photoshop, in Gimp you have 2 types of Gausian blur, each meant for different situations). While yes, the Extract feature might not be in gimp yet, who is going to stop someone from making one.
I'd totally disagree with you about the fonts, on my system the fonts are gorgeous (the TTF ones anyway). Antialiasing is good and things are getting better every release.
One way to fight spam is to contact the Federal Trade Commision and report it.
This Site talks about how to "opt-out" of getting pre-approved credit offers and direct marked offers. It should reduce spam a little bit. Or this site gives more advice on how to reduce the amount of spam (and even better) how to report it to the federal trade commision. Also you look here for more stuff about consumer protection on the internet.

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/5cef/ This watch detects radiation, and is smaller than a PDA. The only thing big about it is the price ($1,500 for a watch?)
