then again what if you got a virus that allows the frequency to not be filtered out and while you were happily swimming and listening, your skeleton suddenly shatters:D
Surely an IM client basically implies a reliable connection oriented protocol?
and the TCP retransmit scales itself to a rough average of the typical delay - so it's not like a lost packet will have you sitting for hours waiting.
I'm a modem user, buddy images take little time to download...
UDP is a simple no frills unreliable protocol - and I guess for request-reply services it's still the better option, but I think a marginally useful IM will still need to be connection oriented;/my opinion.
