From a PR standpoint, how do you convince customers the ship is "safe" and they won't get large doses of radioactivity?
By explaining to them that nuclear powered ships have been around and safely operating for 60+ years. And that the engineers on your ship are experienced former Navy engineers who are now better compensated than they were previously.
On a side note, I don't know why anyone would want to spend a vacation, with around 10,000 other people on a ship this big.
Just speaking from my own experience (7 cruises on ships holding up to ~3000 people). It's more like a weeklong party where you wake up in a new location every day. You get to spend a day in a different place each time you wake up. You don't have to cook, or make your bed, and drinks are delivered to you at the side of the pool as the ocean goes by. I've seen the glaciers of Alaska (took the helo ride up), and watched from the deck as chunks fell into the ocean. I've watched whales, and schools of porpoise around our ships. I've been to Cadillac mountain, and Roatan ziplining through the jungle. I've seen Myan temples, and cruised down the river Wallace with it's amazing wildlife. I've had the chance to ride an Americas Cup boat, ride on a submarine, and ridden an airboat through the Everglades.
Could I have done all these things privately? Sure, but I doubt that it would have been as enjoyable.
I installed one, but the wife refuses to us it that way, complaining that the cat will be cold when we're off to work. I tried explaining that the cat was born with a fur coat...no joy.
Sorry to see you getting beat up while making taking a stand on this. Your position is spot on, but will be modded into oblivion because...nobody can tell me what to do, and it's no worse than alcohol, and twenty other lame excuses. As an engineering manager, working on govt. contracts, we're required to screen. But, if it was my own private business, the only change I'd make would be...don't come in high, and don't do it on the job.
Having had to piss in a bottle occasionally since the late '70s, I've never found it humiliating, disturbing, etc., as some of the posters here claim. I take comfort in knowing that the other people I work closely with have all had to do the same, and that I can trust that they're most likely not high while doing essential tasking that I and our customers rely upon. And yes, I'm aware that this doesn't catch alcoholic behavior, which I've had the unpleasant opportunity to deal with in a couple of employees.
So, if you don't mind working with peers who are high, than go have fun. Just don't expect that others wish to, or should have to in order to have a safe, and productive, work environment.
It has little to do with roads...nearly all interstates can handle much higher speeds than the posted limits. That's just my opinion based upon 40+ years of driving, including 6 of it on the Autobahns. It's really American drivers that haven't been trained properly to handle higher speeds.
It has much more to do with the relative (see, there's the laws of physics you spoke of) velocity of the SDCs and the HDCs. The SDCs will still need to follow at a distance that allows them to stop when the vehicle in front of them suddenly stops, and that may not just be another SDC in front of them, but an HDC that swerved a little, or a deer that ran out. As for velocity, transportation (for me) is best when I can get from A to B in the shortest time with the least hassle. And I'll disagree with your comment on airplanes not going faster, having spent many 14+ hour trips, cramped in a coach seat on business travel.
Roundtrip Seoul Korea to Las Vegas, 1986. Cost $500. Quote me that price today, even in '85 money, and see if you can find a ticket for that price. Oh, and that was with free baggage, meals, more legroom, and fewer people being bumped.
No, things are far from better. Get your head out of your ass.
They'll need to be completely separated. You can't have SDCs doing 100mph next to a lane of HDCs going 55mph. The first time some jackass on his cellphone weaves slightly into the SDC lane, you'll have a huge pileup. The only way to mitigate that is for the SDCs to either go slower in order to be able to brake for such a situation, or to separate them from HDC lanes.
a Maersk triple-E ship displaces 2 million tons, so call it 2 million cars.
My car weighs more than 2 tons you insensitive clod.
Huh ?...in Australia they have clean air laws, unlike the USA.
Try not speaking out of your anus next time.

Other than NZ, what ports/countries have previously banned nuclear ships?
It could also have something to do with the highly trained and disciplined *military* crews that run them.
One would think that there are plenty of former military who wouldn't mind doing the same work on a civilian pay scale.

Those lucky Europeans tend to have much more time off than us 'Mercans.

That's because mom uses it to keep him down there.

Dude!!!
I have creatinists on my family
I've known many cretins, but never a whole family that had them on them. How do you get them off?
So, we didn't need to know that you go both ways.

I don't know what government you fall under in the U.S....no, that's not correct.

This would result in Slashdotters have one arm that looks like Popeye's, and a core that looks like Whimpy's.
Good luck with that. And FWIW, I'm not one of them, but I guarantee you'll have a revolt.

Many species of sharks (which are some of the oldest species around) are threatened, we really shouldn't be turning them into jelly.
Yeah, and we really shouldn't be allowing trolls to post idiotic comments like yours. Nobody claimed that was a plan, so sit your PITA ass down.
It won't be long before ....babble,...
Yeah, I'd love to get Vegas odds on that happening in your lifetime. Hint: It won't.
Fat cats don't fly on airlines, they have their own planes & helicopters with writing on the side of them saying things like TRUMP.

Yup, and who's going to tell all the motorcycle gangs to get rid of their bikes?
